    3. Most of my reading time takes place on the bus each day, and I wanted to read a good novel. Some modern writers put me off with their "slap-me-in-the-face" realism--a technique that leaves little to the imagination. I wanted something that was historically based--but I didn't want to read a history book. I've been doing that for months now while doing my "Twigs"research. While on my way home one afternoon, I stopped at the "Tattered Cover" bookstore in Lower Downtown (Denver), and I went to the third floor bargain book area. I didn't find these books in the bargain area, but they looked so good that I bought four of them. "Druid Sacrifice" is a beautiful book about developing Christianity in Scotland. The Bruce Trilogy certainly speaks for itself and will probably take me all winter to read. The two additional books deal with Mary Queen of Scots. (I'm interested in her, of course, because my Spens ancestors supported her). Of interesting note concerning the Bruce Trilogy: it opens with Edward I's takeover of Scotland and with the Scottish Lords swearing fealty to Edward. One of the first characters in the book who "flattens" the Scottish king: Huge le Despenser!!!! (Not a very nice person). The author also notes that the early conversation was spoken entirely in French because of the Norman/French origins of the Scottish and English lords involved. It's a wonderful book!
