    1. The Long and the Short of it

    3. I received some interesting responses to my tall/short question posted on these lists: 1. For the most part, the Inmans were all short with one exception. The Inmans of Cocke County, Tennessee were tall. 2. The Bunches were all giants. I did not find one short Bunch in the replies I had received. (Perhaps they were busy intermarrying with the Cocke County, Inmans!) 3. For the most part, the Kerrs were of average heighth. I found a few of them who were tall. My most frequent response was that they were also wide. My husband went to school with a Kerr in Missouri. He told me that he was really stocky. 4. For the most part, the Spences were small. However, the Spence families who came from Northern Ireland and who settled in Newberry were tall. They also had red hair. 5. The Spencers were tall. I can't remember any short Spencers. I did see a Spencer security guard in Denver who appeared to be of medium heighth. Had all I could do to refrain from asking where his family originated! As for me--just how tall am I and how did all of these people influence me? I'm only 4 ft 11 3/4--a product of frequent family-line intermarriage, I suspect! So that's the long and the short of it! While I have your attention, I spent an exciting weekend reading Scotch-Irish Virginia court records--an event that was more intriguing than a soap opera and more exciting than a football game! As a result of my long/short questionnaire and exciting weekend, I get to rewrite portions of my web page: the Thomas Spencer of Caswell County section (I know more about his wife), the Bell factor, the Skillern section, and I now know the identity of the Spence family of eastern TN (Hawkins and Knox Counties). However, I have some more research to do before actually rewriting. And that could take a week since I am currently inundated with papers. The main accomplishment of my questionnaire: I have given myself more work to do! So that's really the long and the short of it.
