Most of you may remember my story about our trip to Missouri in May of this year and the fact that we were unable to go into the Moss Springs Cemetery in Jasper County. The grasses were too high, and we could only see two stones peeking over the blades. This morning I received a message from someone who went into the Moss Springs Cemetery while the weather was still cool. She and her husband thought that the snakes would not be out that early. Were they ever fooled! The path leading into the cemetery was so overgrown, they had problems finding it. When they finally made it into the cemetery, they discovered that most of the stones had been toppled. Only four or five of them remained standing. Her husband reached down to lift up a stone in order to read it. An entire family of copperheads shot out from underneath that stone and sailed in all directions. They even slithered between her husband's legs. Fortunately, neither of them were bitten. Needless to say, she and her husband left that cemetery immediately. If you are out in these rural cemeteries and even if the weather is quite cool--watch out. You never know what you may encounter!
