    1. Close Associates??? The Slicker War
    2. Dr. Barbara Inman Beall
    3. While going through the old book that I've been talking about--"The Slicker War"--a few things caught my attention: 1. Bellefonte, AL: It seems to me that John Spencer, the first sheriff of Maury County settled either there or near there. The Turk family of the Slicker War, had close connections there. 2. Monroe County, TN: The Turks owned 300 acres of land in Monroe County. My 4th g. grandfather (Thomas Hood--whose granddaughter, Minerva Caroline, married William David Spence in Davidson County, TN), died in Monroe County, TN during the period of time when the Turks lived there. 3. Graham: A name strongly allied with some Southern Inman families. 4. Bunch: Bunches of Bunches all over the place and closely allied with the Turks. 5. Washington County, Virginia: the James Spencer family resided in Washington County. 6. Augusta County, VA (from where Turk records originate)--Bunch, Spencer families in that area. There is also a Spence family of record in that area at the time when the Turks lived there. These Turks had a lot of power. Their family histories may hold a lot of secrets. For more information, it's all on the Coffman list. 2. Barbara Beall
    3. I wanted you to know that I did a little research today into the background of the Turk family--the "mob" who started the Slicker War in Missouri. Hiram Kerr Turk's (b. 1796 Augusta County, Virginia, d. 10 Aug 1841, Warsaw, MO) was the son of Thomas Turk (b. ca. 1755, Augusta, VA; d. 1833, Blount, TN) and Ann Rhea (b. ca. 1759, Augusta, VA). That Thomas Turk's father was also Thomas Turk, b. 1729 Augusta, VA) and MARGARET KERR (b. ca. 1733, Augusta, VA). The Turk line ends there. I plan to look into the Kerr line and hopefully I will be able to discover which Kerr family Margaret came from. (The Spencers, of course, intermarried with a number of the Kerrs). One source I found claims that the Rhea line dates back to Walter Campbell of Skipnish and Jane Heiress of Campbell of Skipnish (Scotland). Ann Rhea's parents were Robert Rhea and Sarah Bingham. I'm not related to any of these people (with the possible exception of Kerr). I'm curious about them because the Turks came from Augusta County, VA and were living there at the same time as some of my Spencers; the Kerr connection with the Turk family--and the Blount, Rhea County Tennessee connections. Also, I saw one reference stating that the Turks were also in Washington County, Virginia--and that's where a family of Spencers I am researching also settled. My "housecleaning" endeavor and re-discovery of this little book about "The Slicker War" may prove to be the key to something. Dr. Barbara Inman Beall BIBeall@email.msn.com

    1. Re: Book-Slickers
    2. Barbara Beall
    3. I found an Isaac Goodson. Let me see what it says. This is from the book "The Slicker War"... Chapter 11 pp. 44-46 "Judge Human and Charles Harris, another justice of the peace, called out the militia. nathan Rains was in command. They gave a local cionstable, Isaac Goodson, what must have been open warrants for the arrest of the Turks and Hobbses. The militia assembled at Metcalf's on the morning of March 9th, 1843. Other persons assembled there, too. Human, Harris and Goodson were there. So were several old adversaries of the Turks from Benton County, including Archibald Cock, Milton Hume, Loud Ray, John Whittaker, Valentine Hammond, and a son and son-in-law of George Alexander, Francis Alexander and Seth B. Howard. Baptists from both Polk and Benton counties were present, too, among them William Estes and Benjamin F. Barnett. "Jeremiah Black was a member of the militia and was there, but with a obvious lack of enthusiasm. He didn't want to join the formation, and talked against the whole project. Major Rains ordered him into the ranks, accusing him of lying and being a spy. Although he had just boasted that "twenty men couldn't hold me," Black joined the formation. The militia, numbering about one hundred men, marched to the Turk farm, but no one was there. Major Rains posted a note on the door of the cabin ordering Tom and Nathan to give themselves up to Isaac D. Goodson or leave the country. Then the militia marched to the Blue house where they most certainly found someone home. Polly Blue, Alexander's outspoken wife, was there. When Rains told her that she and the rest of the Blues had twenty four house to get out of the country, Mrs. Blue defiantly answered that she would not leave unless she was 'packed off.' "Stymied, the militia marched northwest toward the home of Thomas Holland. along the way they captured Nathan Turk. The company marched in formation the whole time, so Nathan Turk either submitted voluntarily or was brought in by the mixed group of anti-slickers accompanying the troops. The troops themselves acaptured another man traveling along the road. The man had nothing to do with the slicker troubles, but found himself marching along at the point of a gun. He was soon released. "Another man was being held against his will. Jeremiah Black had continued to grouse about being forced to accompany the militia. He attempted to leave, but found himself staring at the muzzles of aobut fifteen guns, so he stayed again. "After traveling about three miles, the militia arrived at the Holland place. There they faced new confrontaitons. Andrew Turk, Archibald Blue, John Hobbs, several Hollands, Richard Cruce and Isom Hobbs were there. Isom, and possibly some of the others, had been hiding in the home of Cruce. The house had bee surrounded by some group, probably the benton county men, which treatened to burn it down unless Hobbs surrendered. Cruce had persuaded him to do so, and he was now in the custody of Goodson, as were John Hobbs and Andrew Turk. "A complicated debate ensued. Isom Hobbs questioned Rains' authority and everything he had done. He chided Rains for cooperating with the benton County men, and asked him if he didn't know "Polk County and benton County were at war?" Archibald Blue questioned Rains about the warning to Mrs. Blue; and Nathaniel Holland demanded to know if Rains was ordering the Hollands to leave the country, too. Holland was upset because he had commented sympathetically to Nathan Turk that he "would as soon be dead as to be the prisoner of such a set of men", and Nathan replied that if what he had been hearing was correct, Holland would soon find out what it was like, because he would be a prisoner, too. Major Rains finally told Holland that although he had the authority to do so, he was not yet arresting or warning off the Hollands. Rains started the militia back toward Metcalf's accompanied by Goodson and his prisoners. Along the way Isom complained that Judge Human and Valentine Hammond were lurking in the bushes and that Rains' true purpose was to give them a chance to shoot him. When they finally arrived at Metcalf's, Rains pointed out to Isom that he had protected Isom during the trip, and Isom sarcastically thanked Rains for arresting him and bringing him to justice. Hobbs also complained that some others for whom there were warrants had not been arrested. He probably was hinting that Archibald blue should be arrested, too. He could have been angry as a result of something that Archibald and Robert Turk did as the Militia neared Metcalf's. They stood on a rail fence and crowed like roosters, an old Tennessee challenge. Isom knew that the real miscreants had been taunting the militia, while, innocent for once, he was the one under arrest. At Metcalf's the militia disbanded. They had marched just over six miles. Along the way they met defiance, received jeers, and helped arrest four men agaisnt whom there was no evidence. It had been a frustrating day for Rains and the militia, but the countryside was under the control of the anti-slickers. Never again would there be a gathering of real slickers." That's the only mention of the Goodson name. I have been curious about this Turk group ever since I rediscovered this old back and have been planning to do some research on them, since they originated in Augusta County, VA. However, I'll save that for another time. 1. Our ancestors and hurricanes
    2. Dr. Barbara Inman Beall
    3. I discovered a great news site on Yahoo that had quite a bit of information on early hurricanes today. So I thought that I would share some of it. This site, by the way is found at http://www.vdes.state.va.us/vahurr/va-hrr.htm On September 6, 1667, there was such a devastating hurricane in Virginia that the Chesabeake Bay "was said to have risen 12 feet. It is likely that this storm caused the widening of the Lynnhaven River." Rev. W. H. T. Squires wrote in his book "Norfolk in By-Gone Days" that "Jamestown saw 10,000 houses blown down...The hurricane blew for 24 hours with unexpected fury, forst from the northeast, then due north, thence to the west, and then southeast...It is said that planters who did not live in sight of the rivers found their farms flooded, and many were forced to seek protection on the roofs of their homes until the storm was over....The storm washed away the foundation of Fort George at Old Point Comfort. 12 days of rain was said to have followed this storm. October 19, 1749: "This tremendous hurricane washed up 800 acres of sand that now forms Willoughby Spit. The Chesapeake Bay...rose...an amazing 15 feet. Again Rev. Squired indicated "that the storm destoryed Fort George at Old Point Comfort, washing it almost entirely away. The Virginia general Assembly had tried in 1727 to strengthen it after the damage done by the 1667 hurricane." Another site: http://www.vdes.state.va.us/99hurr/history.htm lists the following: 1635 August 24--first historical reference to a major hurricane that could have affected the Virginia coast. 1667 September 6--[The one I just mentioned above" 1693 October 29---From the Royal Society of London:"There happened a most violent storm in Virginia which stopped the course of ancient channels and made some where there never were any." 1749 October 19--Tremendous hurricane. A sand spit of 800 acres was washed up and with the help of a hurricane in 1806 it became Willoughby Spit. The Bay rose 15 feet above normal. Major tropical storms causing significant damage in VA: September 1761; October 1761; September 1769; Sept. 1775; Oct. 1783; sept. 1785; July 1788. The Great Coastal Hurricane of 1806 was Aug. 23 One of the most violent hurricanes on record was 1821 Sept. 3 1846 Sept. 8--Hatteras and Oregon Inlets were formed [by hurricanes, evidently] etc. On Sept. 8, 1804, a hurricane did much damage to Norfolk. "Storm track took the eye just west of Norfolk as it veered to the northeast. The hurricane's storm surge killed 500 people when it made landfall in the Charleston, South Carolina Area. The storm of Sept. 3, 1821 was by far one of the most violent hurricanes on record. The eye passed over Norfolk and moved northeast along the New Jersey coast onto Long Island. There was another storm June 4, 1825; August 24-25, 1827; Sept. 8, 1846, August 25, 1851, etc. Barbara === Barbara Inman Beall, Ph.D. Professional Writer, Editor, Researcher Lancaster-Wormiston Press E-Mail: BIBeall@email.msn.com, BBeall43@yahoo.com Voice Mail: (303)556-5477 Snail Mail: P.O. 3. I descend from two branches of Inmans. I think they came from Yorkshire, but that doesn't mean some of them didn't wander up to Scotland. My maiden name is Inman and on my father's side, I descend from Edward Inman of Rhode Island (1619-1706). On my mother's side, I descend from Meshach Inman of North Carolina (1749-1769). His ancestry is disputed, but he is believed to have descended from Robin the Bold of Yorkshire. There are some people on my Inman list who have mentioned having ancestors in Scotland. I encourage you to post your ancestors on the Inman Compendium and to join in our discussions here. We'd love to have you. Today is my only opportunity to do that this week and I have a number of things I want to check or recheck. This trip may or may not result in some revisions to the website "Twigs of Inman & Spence". If so, I will let you know. The information presented at the website is a compilation of what I have discovered to date. There is nothing absolute about it. That's why I put it on line--to test the waters before I do any sort of finalyzing. Meanwhile, we are having a great discussion on the Spence list about a Spence Chapel in Kentucky and information concerning the benefactor of the land for that Chapel. I'm going to dig into some Kentucky information while at the library today and see what I can find in that regard. If I can find a Texas section, I will dig through that material as well. 3. This is another brainstorm. The Lazarus Inman Christiana sued by was Lazarus (brother of Samuel and son of Meshach), who lived in Williamson county at that period of time. I imagine that women just couldn't go into court and file lawsuits in the early 1800s--they probably needed to have someone sign for them, etc. If Hezekiah and Ezekiel were brothers and Samuel and Lazarus were sons of Meshach (a son of Ezekiel), then Samuel and Henry of Burke County (1790), were cousins. The Abraham and Edward names are intriguing, however. An Abraham Inman was transported into Westmoreland County in the 1650s--some researchers have proposed that he was the brother of Edward Inman of Rhode Island???? Perhaps the Rhode Island Inmans and the NC Inmans were closer than previously suggested???? Just a thought. 1. Re: Hezekiah INMAN (b. @1730) > Francis Marion INMAN (b. 1832 TN)
    2. Dr. Barbara Inman Beall
    3. You really have my interest with all of this. I found Henry Inman on the 1790 Census for Burke County listed immediately below Samuel Inman. I also see in your message that you have seen Samuel Inman listed as one of Hezekiah Inman's sons. It was long thought that this Samuel Inman was the son of Meshach. However, in view of what you have submitted--this is what I have: 1. The Samuel Inman/Henry Inman connection I already mentioned on the 1790 Census for Burke County. 2. While digging through the records of Perry County, TN, I found an 1820 Petition that was filed by several members of the community. Samuel and "Ike" Inman signed that petition. "Ike" is probably a nickname for Hezekiah. I don't know whether I have anything on a Hyatt Inman. I'm open to suggestion and don't mind changing my genealogical charts. It has always bothered me because I haven't been able to find more information on Meshach Inman, although there is plenty of information available on Shadrach and Abednego. There is also a persistant story among my Spences that Elizabeth Inman (Samuel's daughter--Rebecca Elizabeth Inman) had some German blood. I'm convinced that it comes from an intermarriage. There was a large German community that settled in Rowan County and this German person must have come from that community. Now, there must be some connection between Hezekiah and Abednego--half brothers perhaps??? I think that I have heard this suggested. I'm interested in your Samuel/Wyatt-as-sons-of-Hezekiah source. Henry and Samuel may have been brothers--or they may have been cousins if Samuel was really a son of Meshach. This is intriguing. I would like to know more. 3. Most of my reading time takes place on the bus each day, and I wanted to read a good novel. Some modern writers put me off with their "slap-me-in-the-face" realism--a technique that leaves little to the imagination. I wanted something that was historically based--but I didn't want to read a history book. I've been doing that for months now while doing my "Twigs"research. While on my way home one afternoon, I stopped at the "Tattered Cover" bookstore in Lower Downtown (Denver), and I went to the third floor bargain book area. I didn't find these books in the bargain area, but they looked so good that I bought four of them. "Druid Sacrifice" is a beautiful book about developing Christianity in Scotland. The Bruce Trilogy certainly speaks for itself and will probably take me all winter to read. The two additional books deal with Mary Queen of Scots. (I'm interested in her, of course, because my Spens ancestors supported her). Of interesting note concerning the Bruce Trilogy: it opens with Edward I's takeover of Scotland and with the Scottish Lords swearing fealty to Edward. One of the first characters in the book who "flattens" the Scottish king: Huge le Despenser!!!! (Not a very nice person). The author also notes that the early conversation was spoken entirely in French because of the Norman/French origins of the Scottish and English lords involved. It's a wonderful book!
