I now have a cover photo on the MyCom version of "Twigs". Since I originally saved most of my pictures in "gif" version, I am going to have to convert them all to "jpg" version. I am setting up individual photo albums for these people for: Inman, Spence, Spencer, etc. etc. etc. I am really fortunate because my Grandmother Inman saved absolutely everything--even ribbons from funeral flowers! I have her old pictures--some of them date back to when photography was first in the experimentation stage. I was equally fortunate because she wrote the names of the individuals on the reverse side of the photographs! So I'm going to work on that first. I have an actual photograph that was taken of the train wreck at Adair, Iowa in July 1872/3 when the Jesse James Gang derailed the train there and stole around $3,000 in cash!!! I doubt that that photograph exists anywhere else. I even have photographs of Adair, Iowa in its nativity--of what the original streets, homes, etc. looked like. That's my Inman/Clay/Waiste/Lee/Stillians line (my father's line). I am not as fortunate on my Spence/Spencer/etc. line (my mother's line). It will take a monumental effort to acquire photographs of some of those people. But I am determined. So, in addition to the "Twigs" journal on Rootsweb--I have a huge "Twigs" database under construction at Ancestry.com Barbara ===== Barbara Inman Beall, Ph.D.--Prof. Writer/Researcher Lancaster-Wormiston Press E-Mail: BIBeall@email.msn.com, BBeall43@yahoo.com,BIBeall@ancestry.com Voice Mail: (303)556-5477 Snail Mail: P.O. Now that I have learned how to play around with this stuff, I can't quit. I have my on-line journal (Twigs of Inman & Spence)--I finally have my home page (see URL below)--and now I am finally setting up that pesky website I've been talking about for a long time. However, I am setting it up on Ancestry.Com through their MyCom program. So, if you would like to have access to my website, send me an e-mail and let me know. I had saved some previous messages, but deleted others. The saved messages have already received their invitation to join (it's free, by the way). As soon as I hear from other interested parties, I will add your names to the access list. However, fair warning. I just have the thing in motion at the moment. I don't have anything in the site at present. Everytime I add something new to the site, a message will automatically be sent out to subscribers, letting them know. Hope I hear from you. Found on Genealogy.com site (this is a pay site) snip of The History of Elbert Co., GA On the 5th day of February, 1780, the seat of government was, for the better protection of the records, removed to Heard's Fort in Wilkes County. Gover- nor Howley resigned to take his seat in the Continental Congress. George Wells, elected to succeed him, was shortly killed in a duel. Stephen Heard was then elected Governor. At this period the State of Georgia could claim the allegiance of but two counties, Richmond and Wilkes. The Royal Gazette, published in Charleston, South Carolina, carried the following item: "We hear the Rebel Junto are endeavoring to outdo each other in every species of rapine and villany. Even Howley and his associates were gentle- men when compared to this set. When such murdering villians as Dunn, INMAN, and McCay are colonels, councillers, and assemblymen, it is easy to guess what must be the result of their counsels. "This period was the darkest that Georgia experienced during the entire Revolution, but Governor Heard and his associates on the Council were able, by almost superhuman effort, to hold the long suffering Patriots together.
I made one tiny change to Chapter Nine of my website concerning the story of Thomas Spencer. One reader found the source for the story and pointed out that Spencer intervened in an argument between two men. When one of them persisted in pursuing the argument, Spencer hoisted him over the fence. Now, I think I am finally satisfied that these people are all sitting in their proper pews, so I don't think I'll make any more changes. In fact, I've already started researching the Missouri material for Volume II. Volume II will replace Volume I sometime in late December. I hope to find out more about the William Spencer family of Jasper County, Missouri. A Peleg Spencer family also lived there during the same period of time. In fact, Peleg was the first commissioner of Jasper County. But as I recall, they claim descent from Michael Spencer of the 4 brothers and 1 sister. I'm also looking into the Lemasters problem I mentioned in my website: David Lemasters was the first husband of Angeline Penelope Spence, oldest child of Elisha Spence and Jane Bell. Angeline's second husband was Elisha Hamby. I am now beginning to think that Angeline and Elisha Hamby had two children: Milly O. and I don't know about the other child. I also am beginning to think that Angeline and Elisha were murdered by bushwhackers during the Civil War. Two orphaned children went to live with Lazarus Spence and Adeline Elizabeth Bryant during the Civil War. When they fled to Kansas, they took the children with them. And I'm still trying to determine the identity of the John Inman who was killed near Houston, Texas County, MO by Federal Troops during the Civil War. He was described as a notorious bushwhacker. Supposedly, they captured him and he tried to escape. So they shot him. That will keep me busy for a while. Barbara Dr. Barbara Inman Beall, Ph.D, BIBeall@email.msn.com Lancaster-Wormiston Press P.O. Charles, I spent last weekend reading Virginia Court Records, etc. etc. etc.--all of which led to revisions to Chapters 6, 7, and 9 of my web page. I discovered that I descend from the Virginia Bennetts on my mother's line. This discovery fired up a new interest in trying to determine whether the Rhode Island Bennetts and the Virginia Bennetts were connected. There was a Samuel Bennett in Virginia, as well as our Samuel Bennett in Rhode Island. I know that the Bennetts came from a great merchant family in London, and I also know that they were Puritan. I have a book called "Suffolk and the Turdors: Politics and Religion in an English County 1500-1600" by Diarmaid MacCulloch (1986--Clarendon Press--Oxford)--a wonderful book! I'm trying to get a copy of it. Right now I have the campus library's only copy. Anyway, Appendix III of that book contains a list of Norfolk and Suffolk JPs dismissed 1485-1603. This list contains some familiar names, all of whom connect with Virginia families. While hunting through this very long list, I found THOMAS BENNETT in Norfolk in 1603. And I am wondering whether he is progenitor of the VA Bennetts as well as the MA Bennetts. The MA Bennetts intermarried with the Rhode Island Inmans; the VA Bennetts tie in with the Spencers through the Andersons and the Bells. What do you think? I just finished revising portions of my Twigs of Inman & Spence Web Page: Chapters Six (the Thomas Spencer of Caswell, NC portion--his wife was Elizabeth Bell, not Elizabeth Skillirn--however, Elizabeth Skillirn certainly had a great deal of impact on the family). I also added new information on the Bell/ Kerr/Turk/Robertson intermarriages/associations I have managed to uncover. For those seeking information on AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA SPENCE FAMILIES--I found out who they were and added that information. I also found out that the Spencers/Andersons/Bunches were all cousins. And the Inmans might just be interested in finding out who their cousins are. So I guess, I have a little something for everyone. The changes are in Chapters Six, Chapter Seven, and Chapter Nine. http://twigs-of-inman-spence.rootsweb.com Enjoy Barbara Dr. Barbara Inman Beall, Ph.D, BIBeall@email.msn.com Lancaster-Wormiston Press P.O. I received some interesting responses to my tall/short question posted on these lists: 1. For the most part, the Inmans were all short with one exception. The Inmans of Cocke County, Tennessee were tall. 2. The Bunches were all giants. I did not find one short Bunch in the replies I had received. (Perhaps they were busy intermarrying with the Cocke County, Inmans!) 3. For the most part, the Kerrs were of average heighth. I found a few of them who were tall. My most frequent response was that they were also wide. My husband went to school with a Kerr in Missouri. He told me that he was really stocky. 4. For the most part, the Spences were small. However, the Spence families who came from Northern Ireland and who settled in Newberry were tall. They also had red hair. 5. The Spencers were tall. I can't remember any short Spencers. I did see a Spencer security guard in Denver who appeared to be of medium heighth. Had all I could do to refrain from asking where his family originated! As for me--just how tall am I and how did all of these people influence me? I'm only 4 ft 11 3/4--a product of frequent family-line intermarriage, I suspect! So that's the long and the short of it! While I have your attention, I spent an exciting weekend reading Scotch-Irish Virginia court records--an event that was more intriguing than a soap opera and more exciting than a football game! As a result of my long/short questionnaire and exciting weekend, I get to rewrite portions of my web page: the Thomas Spencer of Caswell County section (I know more about his wife), the Bell factor, the Skillern section, and I now know the identity of the Spence family of eastern TN (Hawkins and Knox Counties). However, I have some more research to do before actually rewriting. And that could take a week since I am currently inundated with papers. The main accomplishment of my questionnaire: I have given myself more work to do! So that's really the long and the short of it.
