    1. Benjamin/Inman marriage
    2. Donna Howland
    3. Does anyone have info on the Inman family - I'm particularly looking for info on a marriage between Marh Elizabeth Inman and John S. Benjamin, 27 Jan 1875 in Ringgold, Catoosa, GA - looking for name of a child of the marriage - a boy - I believe this John S. Benjamin to be the same as my great-grandfather, died in Wilmington, NC in 1889, but married to Roberta Roberts - brief obit in the Wilmington paper stated he had a "13-year-old son" which would put it about right time wise. I found some info on Ancestry World Tree, but when I tried to e-mail the submitter, it was no longer a valid e-mail. Any info greatly appreciated. 3. I just finished adding more pictures to my website and tried to even them out so that I could cover all these surnames. Included for Inman: more Marble Rock pictures, including my father's gravesite in Cedar Rapids, IA and some of the old Marble Rock homes. Some Clays are mixed in with this. For Hopper: more Hopper graves in Iowa. For Clay: some early pictures of Levi Clay and of my grandmother when she was a teenager. Kessler: I have some Kessler graves in Fidelity Cemetery, Jasper County, MO, that have been on the website for a while. I also included some pictures of James Bunch's grave in Jane, MO and of the Joel Hood family graves in Arkansas. Spence: more cemetery pictures from Missouri and actual pictures of Spences. So I think I made the rounds. Barbara Dr. Barbara Inman Beall, Ph.D, BIBeall@email.msn.com, BBeall43@yahoo.com Lancaster-Wormiston Press P.O. 1. Another "Twigs" update
    2. Dr. Barbara Inman Beall
    3. I put some photographs on the "Twigs" website last night, and added more this morning. I'm still not finished. Items added include the large unidentified family plot in Center Cemetery, Jasper County, MO where Samuel Spence, Elizabeth Inman Spence, Daniel Spence, and Mary Polly Pewitt could all be buried. When I photographed this plot last May, I could not find any identification on the grave. Also--I discovered this from "The Carthage People's Press--Jasper County, MO was flooded in May and in June of 1872. Some of the lower cemeteries stayed under water for quite a period of time. Samuel, Daniel, and Mary Polly were all buried in Moss Springs when this happened. Elizabeth Inman Spence was living in Washington County, Arkansas with her daughter (Milly Catherine Spence Bunch) and her son-in-law James H. Bunch. She died July 16, 1872, and the Bunches returned her body to Jasper County for burial with her husband. However, since Moss Springs was under water at this time, they buried her in Center Cemetery, which was just in the creation stage. Then when Moss Springs finally "dried out", relatives exhumed Samuel, Daniel, and Mary Polly, and re-interred them in Center in that large plot. If anyone knows anything about this plot, I am really interested. I also added pictures of the James H. Bunch/Milly Catherine Spence grave in Jane Cemetery, McDonald County. And I started adding pictures of Butler Creek Cemetery, where Joel O. Hood and Nancy Haskins are also buried. (They were my third great grandparents and their daughter, Minerva Caroline, married William David Spence--son of Samuel.) What I found interesting about their graves is that they are buried with a Jones family. This is one of the brothers of John Bass Jones, who was murdered in Jasper County, MO in 1867. A coroner's inquest was held, but no one was charged. Then in 1880, a number of men were charged with the murder--one of them William Spencer. All of these men wee acquitted. And I started adding more Hopper/Kessler pictures to the website, including the James and Lovilla Hopper stone in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Linn County, IA. James Hopper and his wife were residents of Neck City, Jasper County, MO between 1905-1907. He was the son of Elias Hopper and Mary Jane Swallom, and therefore a first cousin of my great grandfather, Adniram Hopper (who is buried in Fullerton Cemetery, Jasper County, MO). An E.R. Hopper, who resided in Neck City at this same period of time and who may have later relocated to Humansville, was James Hopper's brother. 2. Dr. Barbara Inman Beall
    3. I scanned a number of pictures last night: Marble Rock, Iowa Inman graves, places; Jasper County Spence graves taken in May 1996 (including the one large plot in Center Cemetery where I believe Samuel Spence, Elizabeth Inman, Daniel Spence and Mary "Polly" Pewitt are buried); and some Iowa Hopper graves. I have some more things to scan tonight and then (probably tomorrow or the next day), will load them onto the "Twigs" website. I've been so busy I haven't had time to start writing Vol. 2 of the online journal. What I may do is leave Vol. 1 where it is, and then add the rest of the amterial later. I have enough space to work with. Then the 4 volumes will be removed when I begin a new topic. 1. From the Listowner: Watch out for the Moss Springs snakes
    2. Barbara Beall
    3. Most of you may remember my story about our trip to Missouri in May of this year and the fact that we were unable to go into the Moss Springs Cemetery in Jasper County. The grasses were too high, and we could only see two stones peeking over the blades. This morning I received a message from someone who went into the Moss Springs Cemetery while the weather was still cool. She and her husband thought that the snakes would not be out that early. Were they ever fooled! The path leading into the cemetery was so overgrown, they had problems finding it. When they finally made it into the cemetery, they discovered that most of the stones had been toppled. Only four or five of them remained standing. Her husband reached down to lift up a stone in order to read it. An entire family of copperheads shot out from underneath that stone and sailed in all directions. They even slithered between her husband's legs. Fortunately, neither of them were bitten. Needless to say, she and her husband left that cemetery immediately. If you are out in these rural cemeteries and even if the weather is quite cool--watch out. You never know what you may encounter! 1. Robert Inman--Leaving it the Way that it Is
    2. Barbara Beall
    3. End of Robert Inman discussion. I don't have answers concerning him as yet, but at this time, I'm going to leave him on my ancestral charts as the grandfather of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and as the son of Charles Inman. I like to take my shovel and dig, but some roots do not like to be disturbed. So I will leave it at that. However, if anyone has documentation that Robert was the son of Charles Inman (son of Christopher) and that this same Robert was the father of Ezekiel Inman--I am definitely interested. 1. The Inman Mystery
    2. Barbara Beall
    3. I returned from my adventure in the library a few hours ago--probably with more questions than answers--but here goes. >From "Pioneers of Old Frederick Co. VA" by Cecil O'Dell, published in Marceline, Mo by Walsworth Publishing Co., 1995: p. 198--On 17 Nov 1752, James Hayworth (who moved to VA in 1739) received a 227-acre Fairfax grant on Great Spring Branch of Back Creek; it was surveyed on 26 April 1751. On 4 August 1755, James & wife Sarah sold 227 acres to Thomas Doster for 60 pds. James was deceased by 1759 and his wife Sarah moved to Bush River Quaker Monthly Meeting in Newberry County, South Carolina in 1768. On 10 Oct 1768, their daughter--Jemima--and John Wright (son of John son of James) and Rachel Wright, were married in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Absalom Hayworth was deceased by 2 June 1752 when his will was proved in Frederick County Court: witnesses: John Lewis, BENJAMIN INMAN and John Rubel. [I don't know where Benjamin Inman fits into all of this, but I'm sure that he does.] The next entry I have already mentioned from Colonial Soldiers in the South 1732-1774: Robert Inman, a private in Capt. James Cone's Company, Edgecombe, NC. The following names appear on that same list: Thomas Drake, Thomas Underwood, James Drake, John Cooper, Walter Wall, John and Daniel McDaniel, Robert Hood, Thomas Bell, William drake, Arthur Bell, Elijah Wall, Edward Bell. [There are just too many old familiar names on this list to ignore] In Peter Wilson Coldham's "Settlers of Maryland 1731-1750), Genealog. Pub. 1996, I found the following land entry: County: Prince Georges. William Inman of Anne Arundel Co. Land was called Inman's Plains 17 August 1742. In Brumbaugh's Maryland Records, Colonial, Revolutionary & County, I found Joshua Inman's name, p. 278 in Frederick County, MD on an official poll of the Presidential Election for 1796. Joshua Inman was listed as a Federalist. In "Baltimore County Families 1659-1759" I found a marriage record for William Pinkston, who married Ann Inman in October 1743. Their children were John, b. 24 July 1744, Maomi, b. 18 Dec. 1745 and Greenberry b. 17 April 1747 (p. 509) And in the State and Colonial Records of North Carolina: John Rogers Jr. of Edgecombe to Edward Powers 18 Jan 1735/6--Robert Inman, witness. p. 356. Edward Poore of Edgecombe Co., planter to John Inman of Isle of Wight Co., Va. 23 Aug. 1740. p. 424--Robert Inman and Mary his wife of Edgecombe to Aaron Etheridge 18 June 1741. As you can see, I've been traveling in circles all afternoon with these people. I am trying to find a connection between William Inman of Anne Arundel--later, Prince Georges, and Robert Inman of Edgecombe. I have another theory under foot, so I thought I would throw it out to the list and see where it goes. 1. I don't know where the Robert Inman/Charles Inman/Christopher Inman connection began. I think that I first saw it in a microfilm of an old article about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego Inman, but no proof was given in that article. And there is a lot of debate about it now. 2. In 1650 an Abraham Inman was transported into Westmoreland County, VA. Has anyone ever theorized that Abraham may have been the great grandfather of Shadrach/Meshach/and Abednego? I remember reading one suggestion that this Abraham was the brother of Edward Inman of Rhode Island--but I don't know whether that was proven or whether it was speculation. 3. Many of these early Inmans were Quakers. If so and if they were in Virginia, they were given the royal boot by the Royal Governor William Berkeley, who didn't like religious dissenters. That would certainly explain their "alley-ooop" from Virginia to New England and to Maryland. 4. It is beginning to look as though that the Edgecombe NC Inmans came from Isle of Wight, which puts them very close to Surry County where Robert Inman (husband of Mary bailey) lived. That Robert Inman was a Quaker. 5. Now for the "what if" department. What if Robert Inman (husband of Mary Bailey) was the son of Abraham Inman of Westmoreland and father of William Inman of Anne Arundel, John Inman of Isle of Wight, and Robert Inman of Edgecombe NC. And what if Robert Inman of Edgecombe was the father of Ezekiel Inman and grandfather of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego? Perhaps Robert Inman of Edgecombe was in Maryland before NC (because of the "alley-oop factor" pertaining to his Quaker ancestors.) If so, then Ezekiel could have been born in Frederick County, Maryland ca. 1730. By 1735/6, the family was in Edgecombe, NC. Does this sound plausible? Anyway, it is something to work on. I won't return to the library until Christmas break. I just have too many things on my plate over the next several weeks. 1. Robert Inman--continued
    2. Barbara Beall
    3. I'm still "flustering around" with this fellow because I am getting ready to finally load my genealogy charts onto the web and I want them to be correct. I found this item in "Seventeenth Century Colonial Ancestors" published by the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century 1915-1975". Page 137 lists Robert Inman who died in 1702). He is credited with living in VA. He m. Mary ???. And it states that he had service in the Indian Wars. I was reading through my old e-mail messages collected over the years and I don't know who sent me this but here is the text of the message: "As I re-read this, I see that it doesn't say that this Robert Inman came to the New World. In an index for immigrants I show: Inman: Abednego n.a. Virginia 1765-1767 Abraham n.a. South Carolina 1760 Edward n. a. Rhode Island n.d. Hugh n.a. Virginia 1659 John n.a. Nova Scotia 1749 John n. a. Virginia 1619 william n.a. New York 1794 Innman: Henry 26 New York 1711 [same message] I do have a record of Ezekiel Inman as Head of Household in Allegany Co. PA for 1790. Also show Edward, Elijah and Richard Inman from Luzerne Co., PA. According to an Inman researcher from Wright Co., MO, these are descendants of Edward of Rhode Island. [My note: right!] [same message] When I was trying to backtrack the "legend" of the Maryland Inmans, I did note that in a book of the Northern Neck Grant, which lists Benjamin, that there are many references for Frederick Co., but this does not specify if this is VA or MD. And it seems like somewhere I have a notation for a will for a Benjamin Inman in MD." [end of that message] I found this in "Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants Vol. II 1742-1775" Compiled by Gertrude Gray 1988: p. 210: (p. 17) Joseph Blackford of Frederick Co. (assignee of Isaac Jackson, assignee of Benjamin Inman, 171 a. on Back Creek in said County. Surv'd 21 Oct. 1762 for Inman by John Mauzy (and forfeited by advertisement recorded in Book N). Deed to Joseph Blackford. Adj. Wm. Frost, Thomas Privince on Lick Brook 9 March 1771. One piece of information I have in my notebook is from a gedcom file. It states that Robert Inman received a land grant of 400 acres in Edgecombe County, NC in 1740 and that his father was Charles Inman and his mother was Mary Bowly. This Robert Inman married Henrietta Hardin, and it also states that their son Ezekiel was b. 1730 in England. The following comes from "wills and Administration of Surry County, VA 1671-1750), compiled by Eliza Timberlake Davis in 1955: INMAN, Robert: Leg.--If wife, Mary Inman live a widow, then son, Robert to remain with her. If she marry, Robert to be at age at sixteen years and the estate to be divided. If Mary Inman, wife of Robert Inman marry against his wish to sons John & Robert and daughter, Sarah. 6th of the first month 1698/9. Prob. 3 March 1701/2. Witnesses: Thos Tavor, Phillis Carroll, Samuel Cornell, Book 5, Page 237. I think this Robert Inman is the one recognized by the Colonial Dames (see above). Among the Surry County wills: Robert Inman 1701-2; John 1771; Isham, 1785. Westmoreland: Abraham Inman 1662. However, I think that we are dealing with more than just one Robert Inman. And the Robert Inman of Surry County appears to have been a Quaker. But then fast forward to another Robert Inman. Among the Early Pee Dee Settlers in South Carolina before 1790: Robert Inman 1740. This must be the same Robert Inman who appears on the Muster Roll of Edgecombe County Militia, North Carolina 1750s: #111 Robert Inman also appearing on the same list is #106 Thomas Hood. The "Colonial Records of NC" shows the following: At a Council held at Edenton the 10th day of March 1741 Present His Excellency the Governour The Honorable Will Smith, Nath. Rice, Eleaz. Allen, Math. Rowan, Edward Mosely, Roger Moore, James Murry, Will: Forbes--Esq. Members of the Council Read Sundry Petitions for Land Viz Robert Inman 400--Edgecombe. I can't resist this but I found it in "Colonists in Bondage" p. 164: "Transportation to the colonies began on July 9, 1652, when it was decided to write to the governor of Waterford to deliver such prisoners as he had in charge to Robert Cann. Robert Yate, and Thomas Speed, merchants of Bristol, whose ships were traiding to the West Indies and who would take the lot, as they had accomodation. In the next month a license was given to Henry Hazard and ROBERT IMMANS [Inman] also of Bristol, to carry [them]. Robert Inman of Bristol belonged to the Inman shipbuilding family. (That Hazard name reappears in Rhode Island, by the way, where Edward Inman setted). This is just a collection of notes I found tonight while hoping to shed some light on the Robert Inman controversy. I think that the Robert Inman of Edgecombe was probably the same one in Pee Dee SC, and I think (but haven't proved) that he may have been the grandfather of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. As to whether he was a son of Charles and grandson of Christopher, etc., I don't know. But the name "Charles Inman" does turn up among the Tennessee Inmans. 3. I hate to open up this can of worms because some researchers contend that this person never existed--Robert Inman, the supposed grandfather of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego Inman. I obtained a gedcom file bearing his name last Friday, and I am wondering whether anyone has any proof concerning his identity. Supposedly, he was the son of Charles Inman, and he was born in Frederick Maryland ca. 1704. Let's get some discussion going about this person. What do you know about him? Is this the same Robert Inman who supposedly lived in Baltimore at one period otime and for whom a creek known as Inman's Run, was named? 3. I didn't get anything accomplished in the way of genealogy over the weekend. Too much [everyone is getting sick of hearing about it, so I won't say the words] "h. r. ing" However, I am happy to report that all of that is finally heading toward to completion so [hopefully] I can get back on track with genealogy this week. 1. Martin Inman
    2. I keep hoping to find the name of MARTIN INMAN in a message since I have been unsuccessful to date in my search for his parents. Born in Ohio (assumed Clark County since that is where he married) 1824-25, he later lived in Gallatin County, Illinois. Does this name ring a bell for anyone on the list? Thanks.
