The pedigree charts I am currently putting on my "Twigs of Inman & Spence" website belong to my father's ancestors (thanks to the efforts of my cousin who did this Inman/Waiste/Carpenter/Clay etc. research so many years ago. I have few gaps on my father's line and my old PAF is fairly complete as far as the paternal ancestors are concerned. Once I have my father's ancestors all onboard, then I need to update my PAF with some of the recent discoveries I have made on my mother's Spence/Spencer/Hopper/Kessler/Hood/etc. lines. After I update my PAF, those charts will be loaded onto the site, and I will post a separate Index for my mother's ancestors. While I'm on the topic, I have moved documentation for these records from the News section of the website to the file cabinet. The information sheets for the pedigree charts now contain documentation. In TN legend has it that the Inman's came from England as colonists. There were three brothers named Shadrach, Meeshac and Abendego. Apparently Meshac was killed by an indian upon arrival in the US. They say that Abendego's family set it roots in GA, and Shadarach's set it roots in Virginia Territory, now TN. I cannot find evidence to substantiate the story, but it is documented that Shadarach Inman was killed by an Indian's Tomahawk while on an expedition. He possibly expllored with Daniel Boone. A TN newspaper created for the bicentennial of TN said that the tomahawk is still passed down in the Inman family. I have not seen it, however. Apart from the legends, I am excited to find this site, and find accurate geneaological information. ======================================= Bonnie BALE TODD has submitted a Bio Page to The Inman Compendium. I have started adding my family tree charts to my "Twigs of Inman & Spence" website at MyFamily.com. I have so much information, I ran out of memory using Family Tree Maker so I fell back on my trusty old PAF (which seems to hold everything). The charts are being loaded into the file cabinet area of the website. I have an index in the announcement area which shows what has been added. This is going to be a monumental undertaking. I'm loading the charts first and then plan to go back and insert family group records later. Ancestors include the RI and NC Inmans; VA, MD, NC, TN, MO (Jasper County), Spences; VA, NC, TN, AL Spencers; NJ/NY/PA/OH/IA/MO Hoppers; PA/VA/IL/MO Kesslers; PA/OH/IL/IA Klees (Clays); etc. If you don't have access to the website and you want to see what I have, visit the home page below and send a request to the Ancestry.com e-mail address at the bottom of the home page. I will then put in a request for you, and you will receive an invitation from MyFamily.com with your log-in and password. I uploaded a new database this morning which will probably be the last until the Christmas holidays. Hoepfully, all of the corrections that have been sent are included. If I have missed any please let me know. Mom, and I, are going to be in South Texas for the Thanksgiving holidays. We are reversing our normal trend and will have Christmas here this year. We leave tomorrow AM and will be gone until Monday evening. If you need something please leave a message in my box. We have crossed the 53,000 name mark in the database. Several new lines were added and we are hoping to make connections for them. I got word Friday that a part of the IN branch has finally sprung a shoot and that data will be forthcoming. So, the work goes on. There are many new photos in the photo album. There are now about 475 photos available for viewing. When I get back I will try to find a way to sort the files by date so it will be easier to find the newest photos. Things have been rather quiet the last few months. I just want to remind people to keep me updated when they find new data on their family members. I am very happy to make changes to keep the files current. We wish you a very happy holiday season. Don't get too carried away with the turkey and dressing. Save some room for Christmas. Jim --- This email is going to Jim's email list and to the Rootsweb List which is why you might get two copies. I guess that's everyone I've pestered about this place. Moss Springs Cemetery is the resting place for many of my Spence/Spencer ancestors. it is also the resting place for many of my Perry, Jones, etc. etc. etc. people. I received a letter today from my cousin, Clyde Hood. He sent me an article that just appeared in the "Joplin Globe" dated Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999. The article was written by Debby Woodin, who is a Globe Staff Writer and the headline reads "A New Battle over Moss Springs" Briefly, this fight has been brewing over the last three to six years "depending upon whom you ask." It concerns access to the cemetery. The article states that although a recent court hearing in Jasper County Circuit court at Joplin presumably decided the issue of access once and for all, "attorneys hinted to the judge that litigation that started in 1996 may not be over yet in the court battle for Moss Springs." In 1996 the Moss Springs Cemetery Association was deeded the cemetery by the Spring River Baptist Association. That year, the cemetery association filed a lawsuit against the owners of the farm on which the cemetery is located for the right of way to the cemetery. This article is quite lengthy. The Cemetery Association claimed that the farm owners locked out cemetery visitors, a charge the property owner denied. And apparently the farm owners have been to court five or six times over this matter. The farm owner won in circuit court; the Association appealed the ruling, and then they won. And the whole matter is still raging. When we were there in May of this year, we couldn't even see the lane leading down to the cemetery, much less the tombstones. We didn't venture in there. I had one report from someone who was taking an inventory in that cemetery. Her husband lifted one of the large toppled stones, only to be greeted with a surprised nest of copperheads! I believe this cemetery is extremely important to Jasper County history. It is estimated that between 100 and 200 of the early pioneers are buried there. The article states that burials continued in the cemetery until 1947. The Civil War history alone surrounding this cemetery is terribly important. Thought I would pass this information along to everyone. I wish that I owned that farm. That cemetery would become a shrine! Wanted to wish all of you a wonderful holiday. Don't eat too much! I have to journey down to the campus in the morning and then have some time off myself! YEAHHH! Didn't make any great additions to the website. I was too busy trying to straighten out two lines over the weekend. One (Kessler) is now very straight. The other (Hopper) is looking a little straighter. Concerning the on-line journal "Twigs" material that is currently running. I decided to eliminate Vols. 3 and 4 of that project simply because I am already putting all of that information on the MyCom website. Volume 2 will focus on the Missouri people, and will hopefully be ready in December. My goal is to keep both vols on the rootsweb website until summer. Then I will yank it and focus on some different lines. Again, may you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am still searching for info on John S. Benjamin - who may POSSIBLY be my great-grandfather. He married Mary Inman in 1875 in Ringgold, Catoosa, GA according to the LDS site - is there any research showing his place of birth on marriage records OR who he listed his parents as??? This might help confirm my suspicions. Donna Thurman Howland ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

While paging through the material I received from Sheryl the other day, I made a big discovery: There were two James Hoppers--one (b. 1859) who is buried in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Linn County, Iowa (wife, Lovilla), who never lived in Jasper County, MO--his father was Abraham Hopper--and the other--(b. 1862) in Jasper County, MO (wife, Mary Jane Swallom)--his father was Elias Hopper, brother of the Abraham I just mentioned and also brother of my 2nd g grandfather--William Hopper. I believe that Abraham, William and Elias had another brother named Archibald, who settled in Polk County, MO and who was there by the 1840s. His name appears in a book I have about the Slicker War and he was in Polk County when Samuel Bunch (a descendant of the Louisa County, VA Bunches) was Sheriff there. Archibald Hopper was anti-slicker--which means that he opposed the Turk mob who was trying to control the county. Elias Hopper (b. 1825) and his wife Mary Jane Swallom and their family left Ohio for Missouri and were there just before the Civil War broke out. William and Abraham went to Iowa. Elias' son, James Hopper, was born in Jasper County in 1862. These were Union people, so they fled the state in fear of their lives and joined other family member in Iowa. James later returned to Jasper County. And I think it is quite possible that he eventually settled in Humansville. The E.R. Hopper I found of record in Jasper County, was James Hopper's son, not his brother. And I mentioned two additional sons in a previous message: one in Deepwater--one in Avista. Someone has also given me the name of a Joseph Hopper, who settled in Crawford County, KS, who may have been another son. I believe James married Mary Jane Swallom in Iowa, and then they relocated to Jasper County, MO. Her sister joined them for a visit, met and married William D. Kessler, my great grandmother's brother. While leafing through these records, I see that a number of Kesslers settled around the Shellsburg/Palo, Iowa area and that they continued to intermarry with the Hopper/Van Fossen group already residing there. I have to look more into this. And, I am now looking for a Harold Inman in Kansas. I don't have my records with me at the moment to specify a place or date--but that is a new search. I've been pestering everyone half to death about my Grandmother Spence's Hopper line and received far more than I ever bargained for in the mail today--over three hundred pages of material, including pictures. Surnames connected with my grandmothers line include: SPENCE SPENCER KESSLER VAN FOSSEN HARDING INMAN MCCOY WILLIAMS AND WILLIAMSON SWALLOM etc. I'm going to be posting this material to my website, but it is really going to take a while. Now, I have to write my mother and let her know that her sister, Marian Elizabeth Spence, married a distant cousin, Albert William Van Fossen, and probably didn't know that they were distantly related! I was trying to find out the surname of the sisters who married James Hopper of Jasper County, Mo and William D. Kessler of Jasper County, MO. I found it--Swallom. Elias Hopper, brother of my William Hopper, married a Mary Jane Swallom, and this great family of Swalloms moved from Ohio to Iowa and Missouri. James Hopper's wife was Lovilla. I don't know the first name of the wife of William D. Kessler--but I'm digging and I shall find! The Inman connection is going to be interesting because it appears to take place in Kansas around the turn of the century when a Harold Inman married into this great big line. I had an uncle named Harold Inman; this isn't the same person. But now I need to find the Kansas Harold Inman's line. I'm beginning to think that it will connect with Missouri or Tennessee Inmans somewhere. There is even a Spencer family connected with all of this in Iowa--so I have to find out more about them. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Sheryl. You and your aunts have done an amazing job with my grandmother's family! I will certainly read and enjoy, and make the information available on my website! I am now in contact with a person from Des Moines, Iowa who is filling me in on my Grandmother Spence's Hopper family. During the course of our conversation, she mentioned that she also has an Inman connection. When I asked her which Inman line she was talking about, she laughed and told me that we are related in several ways. She is sending me tons of information. She now has me in suspense and I now have all of you in suspense. As soon as I find this out, I will let you know!
