    1. Eli Inman Coats
    2. Gil & Edie Rodriguez
    3. Hello cousins/fellow researchers. I received this email recently, and it sounds like this person could be my cousin, but I do not have an Eli Inman Coats in my database. I am copying part of her email to me here. This is interesting because I have a Martha Martindale Leavell Coats who married George Coats. Martha's first husband was APH Leavell. A daughter of Martha and APH married William Inman. This William Inman's father was Eli Inman. This whole group was in Benton County, Iowa, just as this person says. This family was quite close and I can see why one of the descendants would name their son Eli Inman Coats. Her name is Maryls Rice and her email is: huskerette@hotmail.com Here is her email, in part: "Our RICES were in Benton Co, Ia., as well as the COATS family, MINERs, and they married into the KELLOGGs, and LOVELLs. I noticed your mention of INMAN---I have an Eli Inman COATS who is buried in Koszta, Ia., just south of Benton Co. I have no idea why his name is INMAN, but wondered if you happen to have a RICE in your tree like that." Does any of this ring bells to you? 1. More on Daniel Boone
    2. Dr. Barbara Inman Beall
    3. This is the quote I mentioned earlier today. It comes from John Mack Faragher's "Daniel Boone: The Life and Legend of an American Pioneer" published 1992, Henry Holt & Co., p. 76: "Boone, John Findley, John Stewart, and three others left the Upper Yadkin for Kentucky on May 1, 1769, their equipment packed on ten or fifteen horses. Each man carried his own rifle, powder hons, bullet pouch, and hunting knife, but they also needed extra stores of flint, steel, tinder, powder, and lead, as well as tools for casting bullets, traps, blankets, camp kettles, salt, and other provisions. 'Boone was the only woodsman,' said nephew Daniel Boone Bryan, 'tho' Stewart was pretty good with a gun.' In fact, Stewart, married to Boone's sister Hannah and ten years his junior, had been west of the Appalachians the year before with a party of hunters led by another of Boone's companions, Benjamin Cutbeard. The Cutbeard party hunted and trapped for several months in Tennessee and successfully sold their catch in New Orleans, although they were robbed by Indians on their return. Stewart thus had valuable experience, and Nathan Boone said that his father 'had all the confidence in him that one man could have in another.' Stewart possessed that most essential requisite of a hunting companion, said Boone: you could count on him to always be in the right spot at the right time. Little is known about the other three--James Mooney, Joseph Holden and William Cooley--except that they were neighbors from the Upper Yadkin and were to act as 'camp keepers,' preparing the skins and assembling them in packs." The possibility exists that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were part of the Cutbeard expedition in 1768. Also, someone sent me a message recently concerning a Sarah Inman who was supposedly the first wife of Daniel Boone. I have never found a Sarah Inman mentioned in any of the Boone biographies. A Sarah Inman may have been married to one of the other Boones, however. 3. I got a chuckle out of the part about the ancestors being rich in Germany. I have found MANY records of "my" INMAN branch owning lots of land in Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Ohio. None of it came down to any of my recent ancestors :-) As a matter of fact, I found interesting ones in Ohio where the "patriarch" John (m. Elizabeth LIPPENCOTT) gave 150 acres to 4 or 5 of their sons "for consideration of Love and good will received to my full satisfaction of John Inman, Jr (and some others on other deeds) go give, grant, bargain. etc. etc. I haven't had a chance to get back into this line and see WHY the others didn't get any. Did they not go to Ohio? Were some of them not living? Interesting searching I have yet to do. 3. This is a wonderful clue. Thank you so much for posting it. I have a biography of Daniel Boone (recently published) that also suggests another possibility. I'm writing this from school and don't have my records in front of me. Apparently about 1768 a band of hunters were hunting with Daniel Boone's brother-in-law. They went all the way to New Orleans, where they sold their hides, etc. On the way back, they were attacked by Indians and robbed of their money. Several of them were killed and a number of them were wounded. I will look up that reference tonight and post it to the list tomorrow. By the way--while we are on the subject of Meshach--the "German connection" came up again in a letter I received from a distant relative. She claims that old family lore states that these Inmans owned property in Germany and were very rich. Their properties were confiscated after they came to America. I believe that Meshach's wife was definitely German--so family lore may have crossed the two individuals--just as family lore may have crossed Daniel Boone with his brother-in-law. 3. I was asked to forward this to the mail list for help. If you DO HAVE any input for this researcher please respond. ===================================================================== My Aunt just forwarded an interesting letter to me. The gist of it is that Ethelyn Inman Brown is supposedly descended from John Tilley one of the Pilgrims. So far I haven't found anything to confirm or deny this contention. The dates of the the Pilgrims and John Tilleys descendents are such that the relationship would have to be through the distaff side of the family not the Inmans directly. It would have to be through the Bennetts, Grants, Spraggs (Spragues)or Cranmers. Edward Inman's mother would have predated the Pilgrims and the Bulls and Rutters are 1st generation who can be traced back to England without going through any Pilgrim ancestors. I did run across some confusion around Edward's possible 1st wife, Elizabeth Hopkins. If her father was William Hopkins, he may have been a brother of one of the Pilgrimss (Stephen Hopkins). In fact Stephen Hopkins had a daughter Elizabeth (common name) who disappeared/died about the time that Edward's 1st wife was supposed to have died. Supposedly, Stephen Hopkins' daughter died unmarried but what I have read so far seems only tentative on that. Have you seen or heard anything about this supposed Inman--Pilgrim connection. Is there anyway you could query the other researchers for me and find out if they know anything about this connection? I would really appreciate finding out one way or another. --- This email is going to Jim's email list and to the Rootsweb List which is why you might get two copies. 1. The parable of Meshack's death
    2. Many of you are familiar with the tale of Meshack Inman's death in 1767 on what would have been called a "long hunt." The version told in the Missouri Historical Society publication c. 1902/4 (?) first claimed he had died while on a hunt with Daniel Boone near Nick-a-Jack Cave, but the extensive descriptions of Boone's hunts (Draper, et.al.) - and particularly those on which comrades died - has never mentioned an Inman or anyone associated closely with them. You will recall that the Inman holdings in Burke Co. were near Linville R. which drew its name from the family of William Linville, a close relative by marriage of Boone. Dr. Archibald Henderson (a relative of land speculator/developer Richard Henderson of Orange Co. NC) , in his "The Conquest of the Old Southwest," includes a reference to hunters/traders killed in 1767 that might provide some clue as to when/where Meshack died, particularly if you look in the archives of Gov. William Tryon of colonial North Carolina. Henderson writes: "During the summer of 1766, while Boone's friend and close connection, Captain William Linville, his son John, and another young man, named John Williams, were in camp some ten miles below Linville Falls, they were unexpectedly fired upon by a hostile band of Northern Indians, and before they had time to fire a shot, a second volley killed both the Linvilles and severely wounded Williams, who after extraordinary sufferings finally reached the settlements." In May, 1767, four traders and a half-breed child of one of them were killed in the Cherokee country. In the summer of this year Governor William Tryon of North Carolina laid out the boundary line of the Cherokees, and upon his return issued a proclamation forbidding any purchase of land from the Indians and any issuance of grants for land within one mile of the boundary line. Despite this wise precaution, seven North Carolina hunters who during the following September had lawlessly ventured into the mountain region some sixty miles beyond the boundary were fired upon, and several of them killed." This last reference, which I had never seen before, could include Meshack Inman. The timing, however, is problemmatic: I've never seen a reference to the Inmans in early Rowan (later Burke) Co. before 1771 when Ezekiel was constable in the Linville Falls area, or four years after Meshack reportedly was killed. Long hunters, too, originated in Albemarle Co., where the Inmans lived before Burke. Randy McConnell

    3. Well, I think I have finally gotten caught up. All of the photos from the trip to KS are now loaded in the photo album and can be seen there or on the individual pages in the database. The final list of cemeteries is as follows: GOING - Bowie, Montague, TX (2) Chillicothe, Hardeman, TX Frederick, Tillman, OK Hydro, Caddo, OK Centerview, Lincoln, OK Stroud, Lincoln, OK Drumright, Creek, OK Ingalls, Payne, OK Covington, Garfield, OK Mt. Moriah, Kansas City, MO Paola, Miami, KS Osawatomie, Miami, KS Adair, Barton, MO Rich Hill, Barton, MO Golden City, Barry, MO Dudenville, Dade, MO Joplin, Jasper, MO Exeter, Barry, MO Westville, Adair, OK (rained out) Greenville, Hunt, (2) TX (1 closed) You can view the photos in the database by typing in the name of the town in the second grey search box. One new change to the web site is the rearringing on the Documents|Cemeteries section. The top box of state links if for cemetery surveys (names/dates listed only). The bottom box of state links will take you to new pages for each state. These pages include: 1. a note as whether the cemetery has been visited and photos are in the photo album, 2. a map of the cemetery if available, and 3. a driving map of the local area. These are all geared for printing in advance of a trip to this cemetery. It made our trip this year much easier. Only Ingalls, OK was off enough to have to stop for directions. If you have any cemetery maps or know where some of the cemeteries are located let me know. I got part way through MO before vacation. I will now start on the rest of the states. Before I left, I uploaded birth records for CA. Last night I uploaded new and updated marriage/divorce records for TX and will be working that data into the system. The question of the Inman Web Ring is now open for discussion. Those that are interested plese let me know. My server also wrote last night that we might be able to set up a chat site for just our family on my server. If you are interested in that, let me know. I am now going back and trying to catch up on letters and promises that I have made. Please bear with me. I am still fighting with DSL to get hooked up, I got my ZIP drive replaced but I still need to put the computer in the shop for a new fan or chip. Keep sending in your summer findings. We are constantly making new finds and contacts. JIM --- This email is going to Jim's email list and to the Rootsweb List which is why you might get two copies. 3. I had a streak of good luck happen recently. One of the small libraries in Boulder contacted me concerning a family history section the library no longer had space for, and the librarians decided that Barbara Beall would just love to have this material. The material moved into my house on Friday: old DAR magazines dating back to 1909 with TONS of family history. The older magazines are so precious because they contain less advertising than the current publications. Before, during and after the First World War, DAR ran roster lists of troop units (Revolutionary War), county marriage and probate records, etc. You name it--the organization ran it. Besides queries, they published answers to those queries, and I discovered some fabulous information while just skimming through a few of the older issues. So, I now have a tiny genealogical library in my house and shouldn't have to run to the main library for a while. If I make any outstanding discoveries, I will certainly keep you posted. Barbara P.S. If I hadn't claimed those old magazines, they could well have been round-filed because the library absolutely did not have room for them any more. ===== Dr.Barbara Inman Beall, BBeall43@yahoo.com, BIBeall@email.msn.com Online Journal: http://twigs-of-inman-spence.rootsweb.com For permission to access MyFamily.com database: Barbara 4902@myfamily.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. I don't know how many of you have access to the History Channel, but they are running a series this week that may be of interest to some of you. The topic is Frontier Warfare. Last night, they ran a special devoted to the Battle for King's Mountain (Abednego Inman fought at King's Mountain). Tonight, they are focusing on Mad Anthony Wayne, and the last episode is scheduled for Thursday night. If some of your ancestors fought in some of these battles, you may be interested in watching this series. (Monday night was devoted to the Black Hawk War.) I don't know what the Thursday night episode will deal with. As a side issue--tonight they are running a special on Quantrell's Raiders, which would certainly interest people with ancestors in Missouri and Kansas.
