I just uncovered more information in my Grandfather's papers that I was previously unaware of having. In a letter dated 6 June 1975, to my Grandfather, Merle Franklin Gustin, from a Martha M. Helwagen, "Dear Mr. Gustin: While doing some research in Warren County, Ohio, I came across your correspondence, relating your interest in the Gustin family of that area. I remembered that I have some Gustin material here at home; records given to me by Lindsay M. Brien, a prominent genealogist in Dayton for many years. She is now in her 90's, & living in a Masonic Home. I have enclosed her data, also that from other sources I have in my library here at home. No doubt you have some of it; perhaps all. However, the material is full of clues. Have you sent for Benajah's Revolutionary War service pension? Many times these documents are highly interesting -- telling of Indian fights, etc. Also, it is probable that you can take the family back for several generations in New Jersey. I would also send for a pension for the service of Amos Gustin. He surely is a relative, & his records may be very helpful in your search. I am a researcher for the Cincinnati Historical Society. My home is in Cincinnati, but I am temporarily living in Dayton. I do not often write letters such as this; but when I know that I have material which may be of help, & if I were to withhold it, I would not have a very good feeling about it. There is no charge for the enclosed. Sincerely, Martha M. Helwagen 2062 Ravenwood Ave. Dayton, Ohio 45406 The information she sent is as follows: Warren Co., Ohio Jeremiah Gustin: from Green Co., Pa 1798. I do not find a will for any Gustin (etc. spelling) to the above date. There may be intestate records however. (Warren Co.) The Amos Gustin, of Adams Co., O., also had a son, Benajah. Several of his children also married into a Jones family. However, this Amos served from Virginia, & born Florida, Orange Co., N.Y. He married Susannah Jones. Moved to Adams Co. in 1795. In my DAR Roster, 'Rev. Sldrs who Lived in Ohio', Amos, of Adams Co., gives his service in Pa., and refers to Adams Co. Histore. (No page number.) I do not have an Adams Co. History here at home. I have some Adams Co. cemeteries by Robt. D. Craig -- just a small booklet, but no Gustin names appear. I have an index of the Brown Co., Ohio history, and the name Gustin appears on p. 131, part 2.
