Hi - Sandy and Everyone on the List! Ain't this a great Party Line? First, let me introduce myself. I am Roy Eastes, born and raised in Marion, Grant Co., IN and lived part of my life around Anderson and Chesterfield. I had many ancestors in Madison and the surrounding Counties. I left the area in WW II and finally settled on the Golden Gulf Coast of MS. Here is a cut and paste from one of my book reviews: LeRoy F. Eastes, Jr., (better known as Roy) and was born in Marion, Grant County, Indiana in 1921. He entered the military during WW II and retired from the Air Force with 22 years of active service. He then spent 2 years with the Gulfport Area Chamber of Commerce at Gulfport, MS and then went back to the Air Force as a civilian for another 16 years. During this 38 years of Federal Service, he spent 28 years in the field of education, 12 of these were devoted as a writer and editor of text books for the Radar and Computer Schools of the Electronic Technical Training Center of the Air Force located at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. He is a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a Charter Member of Joppa Shrine Temple of Gulfport, and a member of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter of the Son's of the American Revolution # 1238 and National # 140447 and a member of the National Genealogical Society. He has published "The Eastes Families of Indiana" in hardback, "The Descendants of John Long, Sr. of Maryland, (1685-1746)" and "The Maloy Families of Mississippi. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I am currently working on another book that will be titled, "The Descendants of Elisha Estes of Roane Co., TN." This book will contain some 4000 descendants. It records and documents the migration of my ancestors from VA to SC, through KY to IN and TN. My snail address is -17271 Lowery Rd, Gulfport, MS 39503, Ph (228) 832-2214 Now that I have bored you with all of that - lets move on! Sandy, - I will try to comment on the points in your letter: 1. I want to congratulate you on your great idea of having the query boards automatically posted to the List. This will be a great asset to us all! However, it will be a great (and much appreciated) effort on your part to set it up and bring it up to date! Even if the archived material is not posted it will be a great asset in the future! In the beginning several years ago, I posted in many places then lost track of where I'd been - So, I stopped posting and now depend on Mail Lists. I also found it too inconvenient to keep checking back to see if anyone had posted to the board in reply to my queries. Now I am a subscriber to 11 different Mail Lists. Its amazing how some of them have grown stale and inactive! Your idea of posting the queries is great and should stimulate a lot of interest! 2. I subscribe to any mail lists to able to contact other researchers in my field of concern, be it surname or geographical area and to have access to otherwise unavailable information. 3. If I am not mistaken,a mail list, as described in rootsweb policy, is for specific items of interest and discussion of a genealogical and historical nature. Not for the exchange of recipes or common gossip. Also attachments can not be added to postings. Since I have not read the original policy for some time, I could be wrong but this is my opinion. 4. I would like to see period postings of areas of interests such as roll calls (especially from new subscribers), historical dialogues and excerpts from records or other documents about historical events and places in the area. Also events that took place in neighboring areas if they effected the people in Madison Co. at the time. Also, questions about historical events and places. Some of us may have just what you are looking for and may be able to contribute. 5. I have a great deal of information in several data bases and would be willing to share whatever is available. My health is failing with age so I am currently devoting most of my available time to my book. However, I will be more than happy to take the time to respond to requests for information. 6. I have had excellent results from contacts posting to the Madison Co., IN - Mail List! The subscribers have been most helpful! Ask and if possible, you will receive! I have found breaks in brick walls on two of my great grand parents lines and found many new cousins and new friends! Don't be complacent! Pitch in and help! Sandy, I know you said the primary reason for your letter was not for Roll Call, but can't resist the temptation!! My areas of research and the information in my data bases concern: EASTES, ESTES, LONG, POOR, PARR, ECK, GARDNER, SCOTT, CUNNINGHAM, WEBB, STACEY, HARVEY, BRISTER, MULLICAN, BRISTOW, NEIGHBOR MALOY, BROWN & FOREHAND - with variations in spelling. Areas of searchs are in VA, NC, SC, KY, TN, IN, GA, AL, FL & MS If any one of you are searching or if you know of anyone else who is searching in these surnames, please contact me at my E mail address. Best Regards to All, Roy Eastes <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. If you find a misteak in my typing or grammer, please don't be surprised. I always put in a few for people who enjoy finding them! Man is the only Animal that Blushes, or needs to -- Mark Twain
Roy, thanks for the praise regarding the gateway, but I can't take credit. GenConnect has had the gateway ability available for a while now, but it has been up to the List Administrator to allow it to be opened, and not the Query Board Administrator. Now, we have the opportunity to do it, but some listers might not favor getting additional posts, so we'll have to see. And, by the way, when you post a message on the Query Boards, you are notified by e-mail when someone replies to the post you left, so at least you don't have to keep checking back to see if someone replied at GenConnect. However, when the List receives a posting from the Query Board, the reply has to be made over on the Query Board instead of the list or in addition to the list since the original poster might not belong to the list! I have a couple of projects in the works as to historical items from the area; however, I may be putting them up thru the web site instead of the list. I haven't made that decision yet. For answering a non-roll call, I give you 3 lashes with a wet noodle and command you to send me some urls for your ancestors to be included on the web site. I am intending to have an entire section of links to Gedcoms of Madison County families. To All Listers, I say thanks to those of you who have replied so far to my questions and now, I will be sending a couple of additional posts on different topics to the list for everyone's review. Sandy, Forgive me but I am a subscriber to the Listserv but have not responded to your roll coll request. I am subscribing for information on my dad who was born in Anderson in 1901 and who I am trying to get information on. My time is limited like so many of us so between being older, a grandparent, working full time as a university administrator and finishing my doctorate I am swamped. I do have a family tree on the internet but will have to look up the address since I forgot where I put it. I know 3 wet noodles!! I will try and get back to you sometime today. I am searching for info on Lester Leo Snyder. Thanks for your patience. linda carr -----Original Message----- From: Sandy Hennis [mailto:sand4606@yahoo.com] Sent: Thursday, April 12, 2001 7:50 PM To: INMADISO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [INMADISO-L] Sandy's questions Roy, thanks for the praise regarding the gateway, but I can't take credit.
