"Marilyn Shields" <auntiem7@ameritech.net Hi Marilyn, I'm not related to the Bowers, but have a pedigree chart from a lady who was researching the Bowers family back in the 70's. I, of course do not know if this is your family or not, but perhaps it might be of interest to others. The name on the chart is : Jean Preston Kensill, R R 2 Box 756, 1502 Lake James, Angola IN 45703. I. John Bowers fr Swartz Germany II. Hennery Bowers m. Dorothy Astherline III. I am in possession of a ship's manifest where it states a relative's destination is Alexandria, Indiana. The time is Sept 1910. His destination address is 1307 W. Monroe St., Alexandria. My great uncle next shows up on the 1920 census in Los Angeles, CA. Would anyone have a suggestion as to what sources I might check to document his stay in Indiana? This is a great site. Other than being a map it has no other name or location. You put your town/city name, pick state and it finds it and is on a printable site. I had run across this several yrs. ago but did not know enought about genealogy to really know what to do with it. Now I know it is great in finding the small towns (don't know how far back the timeline) my father and grand father were born in. I took time to check it out good today and me being real old, older than most, I had to really think on what to do. At least I can pin point my father and grandparents places of birth. Check this site out and have fun. Beej in AZ TopoZone - The Web's Topographic Map http://www.topozone.com/

Hi, Missy. Three out of four names isn't bad! That's my interest out of what you have posted. And the fourth is one that I can certainly use. If you will go to my database at WorldConnect you'll see a little further information on these families. I have connected David Edward Metcalf of a John Metcalf but am only guessing that is the right one. The name Noble comes into the picture because my great grandfather, Erastus James Metcalf, had a boy named Andrew Frederic Metcalf by his first wife, Martha Priscill Taylor. He apparently abandoned her and she remarried a William Noble and had 8 more children. It's all at WorldConnect. So many of the Metcalfs wound up in Indiana and Ohio that I just wonder if it is mere coincidence that I find a Noble there also. I sure would like to find descendants of Andrew Frederic who may have taken the name of his stepfather, Noble. What can you add to what you have already posted and what I have at WorldConnect? Bob http://community.webtv.net/bob543w7/TATEONTHEWEB and my database at rootsweb's WorldConnect http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=rtate

The following URL was sent to a list for migration trails and I thought others would benifit by having it. It is just chock full of interestging information and maps. It will take some time to get thru this site. Every state has more than two maps in this site. Migration maps help to find how our ancestors found their way to settle in IN., overland or the Ohio River. The Old Wagon Road and/or the National Road. There was a lakes road that skirted Lake Erie that came into Ohio and Indiana. Depending on where they came from, who they traveled with was how they got to Indiana. The getting from one point to another is very important to know and maps are that tool to be using. Enjoy the search. Beej in AZ Thanks for your sharing, Beej. Some subscribers have likely viewed the following link: (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/Libs/PCL/Map_collection/map_sites/hist_sites.html# americas) that includes many maps. Don't overlook the link to the David Rumsey Collection, that has many items of general interest in addition to migration maps. Neil McDonald If you would like to thank this fellow for the URL here is where I received the info for passing on. From: macbd1@arthur.k12.il.us (macbd1)

The following deals with being able to read old papers in our court horses of today that were written a century or so ago. We don't want to make mistakes in following the written word of a time gone by. Beej in AZ An exerpt from the first paragraph of the site. >>>When reading old deeds, wills, court papers, letters, or any other original document it is imperative one be familiar with the handwriting styles of the period. If not, mistakes can be made through misinterpretation and mistranslation. It is also possible that you would not find your relative as you would not recognize the name. A paleographic understanding of the period is also helpful in understanding how the spelling of the surname many have changed. <<<<< From: "Joyce Reece" <jreece@icx.net> Subject: handwriting!
