Williams FIDGET PRESENTS: Ask Anne and Nan By Anne B. Adams and Nancy Nash-Cummings February 7, 2001 f * f * f * f * f * f * f * f * f * f * f * f * f * f * f OLD PAPERS YELLOW WITH TIME DEAR ANNE AND NAN: Over my lifetime of 92 years, I have collected newspaper articles, letters, books and magazines, some over 100 years old. In general, they are yellowing and becoming more fragile as time goes on. I would like to save them for my family, if possible. Is there anything I can do to preserve them and prevent further deterioration? -- LYLE HEDRICK, Gardnerville, Nev. DEAR LYLE: In regard to your newspaper articles and letters, we recommend you take them to a copier center, which will be able to duplicate them on their machines. Please specify that you want them to use acid-free paper when copying. You can then store both the original articles and letters, along with their copies, in Mylar sheet pockets or acid-free album pages. The yellowing occurs because of acid used in paper manufacture. There is a new product on the market called "Bookkeeper Deacidification Spray" which uses magnesium oxide to neutralize the acid. The magnesium oxide becomes firmly fixed in the cellulose fibers and on the paper's surface, and it is a permanent process, leaving an alkaline reserve in the paper. There are a number of options you can choose from for preserving larger objects such as books and magazines. We think your best bet is to order a catalog from the Gaylord Archival Storage Materials and Conservation Supplies (P.O. Box 4901, Syracuse, NY 13221-4901; 800-448-6160). The catalog is free and is filled with technical tips on preservation techniques as well as every kind of product you may require for the preservation of books, manuscripts, photos, artifacts, textiles and memorabilia.

Hi - I have started a new web page on my Eastes ancestors. Many of these descendants ived in early Madison and surrounding Counties. It contains a picture of Jane Eastes daughter of Obadiah Eastes and Francis Harvey. Born 6 June 1793 in SC, died 24 January 1888 in Cumberland, IN.She married William Harvey 21 May 1815 in Franklin, Co, IN. This site is under construction and will be updated as time permits. "Our purpose is to provide information and links concerning historical records relating to the descendants of Elisha Estes who died in Roane County, Tennessee in 1818/19. Please direct your comments to - Leastes2@aol.com " You might want to consider a link to this page on http://eastes.org/ Best Regards Roy Eastes, Gulfport, MS <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> When we record our heritage we take great pride in looking at our list of ancestors and admire their origins, migrations and accomplishments. But, what good is it - unless it’s true? We need stories and rumors, they are great and often lead to the truth! BUT - Help eliminate errors. Don't take anything as Fact! Check references for validity! If we don’t our children’s children will be led down false trails and they will never be able to find their true heritage.

Hi Zelda, My one experience with finding nothing on someone in any resource. I had taken the death date from the grave stone. Did learn of his widow applying for a pension with enough info to write for the pension record. There I found that the grave stone had the right month and day but was two years off on the year. Going back to the newspaper with this new date of death, I got a ton of information including when he came to America, with whom, and names of his family who did not join him the trek to USA. I'm not sure how to tell you to duplicate my story, but most small Indiana towns had coverage of all deaths. Maybe just looking for alternate death dates might work. Dorothy Vekasi
Harry V. ELSEA married Mahala Kate MILLER d/o Daniel MILLER & Sarah J. (DIETRICK). She was born 26 Mar. 1884 in Mendon, OH. Information passed along in a book was that Harry and Mahala lived in Anderson, IN. These were Brethren folks. This is all I have on this family. Anyone familiar with this family? Am looking for any information to add to my DIETRICK file. Thanks Carolyn at the email address of: DavidOF@wesnet.com

Zelda, Great minds run in the same channel. I'm chasing the same thing! I sent a message earlier this week to a volunteer in Hamilton County because Phyllis at the Anderson Public Library said she didn't have a will in Madison County. I also found an Orange B. Shaul listed in WorldConnect and sent a message to the submitter, but he doesn't know of any connection between Orange and any Summers. Just checked further in my messages and the volunteers checked the will index, but neither name was listed. Didn't even find her listed in the cemetery book or an obit. There has to be something. I'm open for any suggestions. Ancestor Margaret Rebecca "Peggy" (Leatherman) Summers lived in Pendleton, Madison Co, IN. She died 26 July 1882 in Madison Co, IN and was buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The Anderson Review dated 14 March 1884 said that Orange B. Shaul was appointed administrator of the estate of Margaret Summers. I would like to find out whether she had a will or whether there was a settlement of the estate without a will. Can someone guide me to a will index or something helpful? Many thanks. Her husband had died in Maryland before she went to Indiana but some of her children lived nearby in Pendleton and they would have been beneficiaries. Zelda. rvdubel@email.msn.com
