Kathryn, thanks for the attempt to share your image, but it didn't make it to the list and I imagine it's because Rootsweb doesn't allow pictures on the mailing lists. To the listers, here is a review of the Guildelines on WHAT NOT TO POST TO A MAILING LIST,from Rootsweb. REMEMBER, I AM THE MESSENGER AND I DON'T MAKE THESE RULES! Guidelines for mailing lists: Be sure to incorporate these points into your welcome message, your pre-written e-mail messages for list maintenance and into the web page (if you have one) for the mailing list. Do not send spam e-mail messages to mailing lists. Do not send attachments (attached files) of any sort to mailing lists. This includes URL shortcuts, v-cards, GEDCOM files, zipped files, and any other type of attachment. Do not forward virus hoaxes or chain letters to mailing lists. Do not use HTML or RTF (rich text format) in messages sent to mailing lists. Do not cross-post messages to multiple mailing lists on the "To:" line or the "Cc:" line of the e-mail message. Do not send e-mail messages to mailing lists for which the topic is inappropriate. Do not flame other members of the mailing list. If you contact me about the image, perhaps we can figure out another way to display it. Thanks for the attempt to share. Sandy, Forgive me but I am a subscriber to the Listserv but have not responded to your roll coll request. I am subscribing for information on my dad who was born in Anderson in 1901 and who I am trying to get information on. My time is limited like so many of us so between being older, a grandparent, working full time as a university administrator and finishing my doctorate I am swamped. I do have a family tree on the internet but will have to look up the address since I forgot where I put it. I know 3 wet noodles!! I will try and get back to you sometime today. I am searching for info on Lester Leo Snyder. Hello, Listers! I have some additional topics to address. 1. VOLUNTEERS WANTED I am requesting research volunteers in 3 areas at the present time: a) VOLUNTEERS willing to do research in the Indiana Room, Anderson Public Library, Anderson, IN. This would include the birth, marriage, death, burial, obituary, and cemetery records, as well as yearbooks, and of course census, etc. b) VOLUNTEERS willing to search for tombstones in various area cemeteries. c) VOLUNTEERS owning private materials they are willing to research from, such as family histories, histories of Madison County and surrounds, and vital record or census indexes, either in books or on cds owned. At this time, we have some volunteers researching from their own materials for the Website look-up requests; however, I am getting innumerable look-up requests thru the web site for records outside the materials our volunteers have available privately, and this is in addition to the requests being made to this List and to the Query Boards. If you would like to participate, please e-mail me. Tell me what you are willing to do: a) library; b) tombstones; or c) private materials. If you want to share your private materials, I need a list of them with appropriate citations. We will also be wanting to have volunteers help with record transcriptions, etc., at a later time. Won't you consider serving as a Volunteer in one of the many ways available? I will look forward to hearing from some of you about this. You can reply to the list or to me at <INMADISO-admin@rootsweb.com>; however, if you are volunteering to look up from your own materials, SEND THE MATERIAL LISTING to me at <INMADISO-admin@rootsweb.com> and NOT THE LIST. 2. Your INGen Web Project for Madison County has a new web site. I invite you to visit it soon, at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~inmadiso/index.htm Thanks in advance for reviewing this and I look forward to hearing from you. Dear Listers: I present the following topics for discussion with this posting: 1. MADISON COUNTY, IN WEB SITE - INGEN WEB PROJECT If you have not taken a look at the InGenWeb site for Madison County, In lately, please visit it soon. I think you will like what you see. http://www.rootsweb.com/~inmadiso/index.htm 2. FEEDBACK REQUESTED: After you have visited the Web site, I would like to have your feedback: a) What you would like to see added. How would adding it help your research? b) What would you suggest we do to make the site more useful? c) Do you have material you would like to have added? I want to inform you that the Web site is still being adjusted and will be changing frequently until we feel the format is the most suitable one, and as we incorporate your suggestions. It is our purpose to further the access and sharing of genealogical data of the entire county through this Web site. 3. SPECIAL ATTENTION: HISTORICAL ORGANIZATIONS I am attempting to contact the persons in charge of the various historical or genealogical organizations in the County to include their info in the Web Site. If you are an officer or member of one of these groups, please contact me with the pertinent info, or furnish me with a contact name and address or e-mail address. I have been in contact with Linda and she has given me the Elwood Pipecreek information. I have also contacted a couple of other groups, but am not sure I contacted the correct person since I have received no reply. If your area has no society, but has someone who might be the area historian, I would be pleased to have their name. We need the information in order to include it in the Web site. 4. YOUR FAVORITE, *FREE RESEARCH LINKS: If a link to your favorite, *free genealogy research web site is not listed and you would like for it to be, you may request it. Send your request to me at the list administrator address: <INMADISO-admin@rootsweb.com> Also, I will accept the urls for your gedcom files on the web for inclusion in the Web Site; however, DO NOT PUT YOUR LINKS OR GEDCOMS ON THE LIST-- We can handle them on the website and on the Boards, but NOT on the list, please. I will accept the addresses for both the research links and your own gedcoms if you send them to me at the list administrator address: <INMADISO-admin@rootsweb.com> If you have any questions or complaints, etc., about the Web Site, feel free to e-mail me privately at <INMADISO-admin@rootsweb.com> with them, rather than clutter up the list. I will be glad to discuss them with you if you wish to do so. All other topics I raised which you feel are pertinent to discuss on the list, you may do so. Thanks for your recent attention and cooperation. Hi - Sandy and Everyone on the List! Ain't this a great Party Line? First, let me introduce myself. I am Roy Eastes, born and raised in Marion, Grant Co., IN and lived part of my life around Anderson and Chesterfield. I had many ancestors in Madison and the surrounding Counties. I left the area in WW II and finally settled on the Golden Gulf Coast of MS. Here is a cut and paste from one of my book reviews: LeRoy F. Eastes, Jr., (better known as Roy) and was born in Marion, Grant County, Indiana in 1921. He entered the military during WW II and retired from the Air Force with 22 years of active service. He then spent 2 years with the Gulfport Area Chamber of Commerce at Gulfport, MS and then went back to the Air Force as a civilian for another 16 years. During this 38 years of Federal Service, he spent 28 years in the field of education, 12 of these were devoted as a writer and editor of text books for the Radar and Computer Schools of the Electronic Technical Training Center of the Air Force located at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. He is a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a Charter Member of Joppa Shrine Temple of Gulfport, and a member of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter of the Son's of the American Revolution # 1238 and National # 140447 and a member of the National Genealogical Society. He has published "The Eastes Families of Indiana" in hardback, "The Descendants of John Long, Sr. of Maryland, (1685-1746)" and "The Maloy Families of Mississippi. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I am currently working on another book that will be titled, "The Descendants of Elisha Estes of Roane Co., TN." This book will contain some 4000 descendants. It records and documents the migration of my ancestors from VA to SC, through KY to IN and TN. My snail address is -17271 Lowery Rd, Gulfport, MS 39503, Ph (228) 832-2214 Now that I have bored you with all of that - lets move on! Sandy, - I will try to comment on the points in your letter: 1. I want to congratulate you on your great idea of having the query boards automatically posted to the List. This will be a great asset to us all! However, it will be a great (and much appreciated) effort on your part to set it up and bring it up to date! Even if the archived material is not posted it will be a great asset in the future! In the beginning several years ago, I posted in many places then lost track of where I'd been - So, I stopped posting and now depend on Mail Lists. I also found it too inconvenient to keep checking back to see if anyone had posted to the board in reply to my queries. Now I am a subscriber to 11 different Mail Lists. Its amazing how some of them have grown stale and inactive! Your idea of posting the queries is great and should stimulate a lot of interest! 2. I subscribe to any mail lists to able to contact other researchers in my field of concern, be it surname or geographical area and to have access to otherwise unavailable information. 3. If I am not mistaken,a mail list, as described in rootsweb policy, is for specific items of interest and discussion of a genealogical and historical nature. Not for the exchange of recipes or common gossip. Also attachments can not be added to postings. Since I have not read the original policy for some time, I could be wrong but this is my opinion. 4. I would like to see period postings of areas of interests such as roll calls (especially from new subscribers), historical dialogues and excerpts from records or other documents about historical events and places in the area. Also events that took place in neighboring areas if they effected the people in Madison Co. at the time. Also, questions about historical events and places. Some of us may have just what you are looking for and may be able to contribute. 5. I have a great deal of information in several data bases and would be willing to share whatever is available. My health is failing with age so I am currently devoting most of my available time to my book. However, I will be more than happy to take the time to respond to requests for information. 6. I have had excellent results from contacts posting to the Madison Co., IN - Mail List! The subscribers have been most helpful! Ask and if possible, you will receive! I have found breaks in brick walls on two of my great grand parents lines and found many new cousins and new friends! Don't be complacent! Pitch in and help! Sandy, I know you said the primary reason for your letter was not for Roll Call, but can't resist the temptation!! My areas of research and the information in my data bases concern: EASTES, ESTES, LONG, POOR, PARR, ECK, GARDNER, SCOTT, CUNNINGHAM, WEBB, STACEY, HARVEY, BRISTER, MULLICAN, BRISTOW, NEIGHBOR MALOY, BROWN & FOREHAND - with variations in spelling. Areas of searchs are in VA, NC, SC, KY, TN, IN, GA, AL, FL & MS If any one of you are searching or if you know of anyone else who is searching in these surnames, please contact me at my E mail address. Best Regards to All, Roy Eastes <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. If you find a misteak in my typing or grammer, please don't be surprised. I always put in a few for people who enjoy finding them! Man is the only Animal that Blushes, or needs to -- Mark Twain
In response to Sandy's questions: I wanted to jump in and answer some of your questions. I wasn't sure if you wanted them sent to the list or you personally.... First of all, I am researching my husband's family lines: BOWYER, ROBERTSON, HUGHES, BECKLEY, SCOTT, GEORGE, DILLEY, SWIFT. A lot of them have lived in Frankton and Elwood (and surrounding areas). We've met a lot of very nice people researching these areas and have found some distant relatives through this list. I enjoy the list the way it is. It is one of the more active lists that I belong to. I haven't used the genconnect boards in conjunction with this particular list so I will have to try it. I think it is a good idea to open the list up to queries on there. It might help someone out in a way they might not have been helped otherwise. Saying this, I am wondering if the boards are very heavily posted to? Thanks for listening, Melissa Bowyer
Dear Melissa: Thanks for your reply and for sharing some of your surnames! Although there's NO roll call now, I did intend to mention something about roll call items I might be asking for in the future so people would have a chance to think about it a little. I expect to see the topics I addressed about the Mail List and about the gatewaying of the Boards discussed on the Board. I am sure everyone would like to know what everyone else thinks or might suggest regarding these 2 things. In answer to your question about the Boards, as to the query Board, there are 475 messages posted since 1999 to the Query Board. There have been 24 messages posted this month-and today is 11 April. The Boards are fairly active, and I think they are becoming more useful. I know that I have posted a couple of "compilations" of old messages to the list, because I felt I might be able to get some of the listers to do some look ups for things people had asked about on the query Board quite some time ago, but had never been answered. This is another method of getting messages to the list, but it is pretty time consuming on my part! I wanted to make it clear that if anyone had any comments about the list or concerns about it or the topics I brought up, that they would know they could contact me privately if they felt the need to, but I don't expect it. There will be at least 2 additional posts I will be making in the next few days that will deal with our Madison County, Indiana Web Site thru the INGen Web Project at http://www.rootsweb.com/~inmadiso/index.htm More pages and features are being finished up now for uploading and I am trying to get this done before I send the other posts. Thanks for your interest....and courage! Someone has to go first! Thanks. Dear Listers: I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Sandy Hennis and I am your list administrator. At this time, I want to call the attention of the List to a couple of items: 1. In the near future, I will begin calling roll on this list at various times and I will be asking for different types of information, including surnames, brick-wall ancestors, and success stories. Please be thinking about what you might be submitting when called upon to do so. You will be requested to submit these things at a later time. 2. INMADISO-L MAIL LIST: In addition to the usual research inquiries, what discussions would you like to see appear in the mail list? Is there anything you would like to see discussed or addressed about genealogy in Madison County, or about the County's history? Why did you subscribe to the list? What is the purpose of this list, as you see it? What do you think would be beneficial to the list, or how can it be improved, especially from YOUR view? What are your interests specifically. Or, do you like the status quo? I'd like to see some discussion on this point, please. 3. GATEWAY BETWEEN MAIL LIST AND GENCONNECT MESSAGE BOARDS: What is your opinion about us providing an automatic gateway from the Madison County Query Boards at GenConnect to the mail list? We have this option available to us and it means that every query posted on the message board would automatically come to the list. Listers would have the opportunity to reply to the poster (through the message boards) if they choose to do so. You can visit the query Board at: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/In/Madison Listers, you can discuss the pros and cons about the gateway on the list for a bit, and we'll see what you think about it. There will be additional posts about the Web site and the mail list following this one. I am separating the topics I need to address for your convenience. If you have comments or concerns about the mailing list and wish to address them to me, I will attempt to answer them. Send me mail at: INMADISO-admin@rootsweb.com Thanks for your recent attention and cooperation. Hello listers, Please bear with me here. I had another death in my family and I'm taking time off the webpage until next week. I had up-dated it some before and will again later. I just need a break. I've had (7) deaths in the month of March to deal with and only one was not related. I have a ton of info to add to the page as soon as I can. Thank you for understanding.
