It is disheartening to hear about little cemeteries being destroyed, but there are also happy tales. Several years ago I found an ancestor was buried on a corner of a farm in Brown County, OHIO. When I drove into the people's driveway, the 10 year old son of the owner came out...and on questioning him about the grave, his chest puffed up...and he said, "I take care of Lizzie!" I'll show you where she is!" With his parents watching, he guided me to the spot, a small fenced in area with about six graves there. Two had standing stones and the grass had been trimmed, the whole site in beautiful condition. I tried to give the boy a reward for his efforts...and he said, "No thank you, ma'am. Lizzie's MINE to take care of!" Nikki
You mentioned the cemetary's being ripped up by land owners. Two years ago, a friend sent me a letter about some cemetary that had been torn up and a request to that I pass it on to my genealogy friends and wanted us to write to our congressmen. I did, and their response was if the people own the land that make it their own private property to do with what they please..... Personally, it makes me mad to find out this is happening again and again and again... what can we do about it? Francine Milburn-Simpson

Hi Connie -- I just signed on to Madison County and am starting to explore -- It was exciting to read of the book you have and wondered if you do look-ups for any inquirer? If so, may I add mine to the list? I am researching the DERRY (Dairy) line. I know that JEREMIAH DERRY (1802-1877) was an early pioneer of Pipe Creek Township in Madison County. I believe some of his family lived also in Fayette County and Hancock County. Any and all DERRY names are of interest to me. Occasionally the spelling changed to DAIRY and was mistaken as DAISY --- to compound the search (smile). Thanks again -- Joan Derry

Wonderful of you to be willing to do this, Connie. I'm interested in members of the Morris and Hall families, both from the Summitville area. What a travesty!! I cannot even imagine that such a thing occurs. If the place had been loaded with artifacts, the powers that be would have been on them like white on rice!!!! This may be more common place than you think. I just found that some of my husband's ancestors were buried in the Old Harmony Cemetery near Atoka, Oklahoma. The state decided to put an expressway through there in the 1970's. They bulldozed the headstones and discarded them and put it right over the cemetery without moving the bodies. Hello, My cemetery nightmare is Wabash Indiana. My geat grandmother Amelia Ann HIBBARD/LUARK died in 1882 in Wabash. About 1901 the City of Wabash decide they want a Park over looking the river. I can't remember whot he people were but they give the property that they owned which was where the cemetery was with the stipulation that they move the people to a new cemetry. They moved the ones with headstons to the Falls Cemetery. The ones without stones were left and the park built over the top of them, one of them being my great grandmother. Andy, I live in Elwood and if you can wait until Tuesday of next week, I'll check at the library for an obit for you. That's my day to volunteer there in Children's room. Yes, death records do exist for 1906. Linda Ead > James Whitcomb ROBESON died 19 MAR 1906 in Elwood, and I would like to > know if Madison County death records exist for this year. Andy: I will do a lookup for you if you will send your request to me at the Anderson Public Library, Indiana Room. My email address at the library is - [email protected] Phyllis Leedom
This is a concern of many and growing. I did read sometime ago where an Amish family purchased and farm in Northern IN and they PLOWED up a family burial plot. I hope this is not the norm? The land was sold to a very young couple who told us we could enter any time we desired. Clean, replace, stones, build a fence around the site and do just about any thing to preserve the historical site. My GGGGrand Parents are there along with a son who died in the civil war and was brought back from VA. to be buried on the home place. My mother always said everyone deserved a marked resting place. She spent 10 years after retiring collecting money from her kin to place markers on all unmarked ancestors grave sites. Hello Joan, Have you requested his military &/or pension records from the National Archives yet? You might find some information in them. If not, at least they are interesting to read...the records I received on my relative gave a physical description of him (eye/hair color, height, weight), medical information, dates, etc. The address to write to is: National Archives and Records Administration General Reference Branch (NNRG-P) 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. 20408 (202) 501-5170 They will send you a form to complete (as best as you can!). The information requested on the form is: Veteran's name Branch of servcie >>>>> Army State from which he served >>>>> Indiana War or dates served >>>>> Civil War For Civil War (Union or Confederate) >>>>> Union (right??) Unit in which he served >>>>> 34th Infantry Rank DOB Place of birth DOD Place of death Name of widow or other claimant Places veteran lived after service They do charge for the look up. I don't recall it being more than $25.00. Hope this helps! Good Luck!!
