These are the names I'm searching for: CHESNUT HUSSEY HARRIS GOODWIN KIRKHAM EARP Any hits? Thanks, Jan Rader Kent, Ohio
I just uncovered more information in my Grandfather's papers that I was previously unaware of having. In a letter dated 6 June 1975, to my Grandfather, Merle Franklin Gustin, from a Martha M. Helwagen, "Dear Mr. Gustin: While doing some research in Warren County, Ohio, I came across your correspondence, relating your interest in the Gustin family of that area. I remembered that I have some Gustin material here at home; records given to me by Lindsay M. Brien, a prominent genealogist in Dayton for many years. She is now in her 90's, & living in a Masonic Home. I have enclosed her data, also that from other sources I have in my library here at home. No doubt you have some of it; perhaps all. However, the material is full of clues. Have you sent for Benajah's Revolutionary War service pension? Many times these documents are highly interesting -- telling of Indian fights, etc. Also, it is probable that you can take the family back for several generations in New Jersey. I would also send for a pension for the service of Amos Gustin. He surely is a relative, & his records may be very helpful in your search. I am a researcher for the Cincinnati Historical Society. My home is in Cincinnati, but I am temporarily living in Dayton. I do not often write letters such as this; but when I know that I have material which may be of help, & if I were to withhold it, I would not have a very good feeling about it. There is no charge for the enclosed. Sincerely, Martha M. Helwagen 2062 Ravenwood Ave. Dayton, Ohio 45406 The information she sent is as follows: Warren Co., Ohio Jeremiah Gustin: from Green Co., Pa 1798. Billie Jean-- I am researching the Tigue/Teague line from Clay and Knox Co., KY. My great grandmother, Mary Abigail Teague, married Marshall 'Darling' Brock. Someone told me Mary had a brother named Nate and he lived in the Brownsburg, IN, area. Mary died in 1943 and is buried in KY. Marshall is buried in the Clayton Cemetery near Clayton, IN. Mary's parents were John and Sarah E. Jordan. Are we possibly cousins? I don't have much to add to the Oldfield line, but I would be happy to send you a print out of my family records for that family. There are a few nuances which might be helpful to you. I haven't figured out how to send stuff electronically from my files, so I will need your snail mail address if you want what I have. I don't have an answer to the Doc Eastus question unless Elizabeth died at a young age and he remarried. I think the "John Doe" must have been used by someone ho didn't know what his real name was. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 11, 2000 10:14 AM Subject: [INMADISO-L] Oldfield/ Eastes etc connections In reply to Letter 3/9/00 by [email protected] titled Eastes, Maynard, Oldfield, Morris, etc. Thanks for posting the names and dates from the pedigree chart. I have most of these already in my files but have a couple of question as my files will never be complete! The Eastes you list are the descendants of Obadiah Eastes and Francis Harvey. They were married in 1792 in Edgefield, SC and later migrated up the Wilderness Trail to KY where they bought land and lived until 1802. Then they migrated north up the White Water River west of Cincinnati (not the White River that runs through Anderson), bought land in various places and finally settled in Mt Comfort, Hancock Co. Obadiah, Francis and many of their family members are buried in the Eastes/Harvey Cemetery in Mt Comfort, which is marked with a historical marker. Here is what I have on Elmer Oldfield. I am not concerned about expanding this line but if there are any corrections I would be very pleased to know about it. These reclrds in my files contain some apparent errors that I would like to clear up. These particular records came from an unknown source and are not confirmed. I donated a copy to the libraries in Anderson and in Marion (Grant Co.) where I was born. Since this book was written, many new facts have been uncovered. For example we have found that Obadiah's father was Elisha Estes/Eastus who we think migrasted from VA and died in Roane Co., TN in 1818 leaving a will. I am currently scanning photographs of descendants of this family to CDs. The oldest one so far is Jane Eastes, the oldest daughter of Obediah and Francis. Jane was born in Edgefield SC in 1793 and walked with her parents and pack horses up the Wilderness Trail to KY. Jane died in 1888 so the tintype was taken before that date. I am scanning these pictures to CD to preserve them but also, I intend to write another book covering Obadiah's Father Elisha, and the descendants of Obadiah's eight brothers and sisters. Where possible I want to insert a picture of the individuals and places of interest within the text. If you or anyone knows of any descendants of Obadiah and Francis Harvey who are interested in lending me copies of old photographs for this project please have them contact me. I plan for this book to be a non-profit venture to preserve our heritage. But, what good is it - unless it’s true? We need stories and rumors, they are great and often lead to the truth! BUT - Help eliminate errors. Don't take anything as Fact! Check references for validity! If we don’t our children’s children will be led down false trails and they will never be able to find their true heritage.

Do you know how to lighten them? I have several photos of my relatives and the worst one is so dark it is hard to see and too dark to copy on my xerox. What to do? Phil Swinford, Muncie, now in TX [email protected] >> Hi _ It has been my experience that tintype photographs will not reproduce on a normal copy machine. I take mine to a local photo shop who use to photograph them and make a negative. They would adjust the contrast to brighten them up in the process. Now this place has a machine that looks like a copy machine and will enlarge any to any size up to 11 X 14 or make several wallet size in one operation. The contrast can be set to obtain the best possible results. Several tintypes can be run at the same time, but they should all be of equal quality for decent results. Finding tintypes of equal quality is a rare thing! I have a 2X 3 tintypes enlarged to 5 x 7 with 2 copies for $9.95. This is with the contrast adjust to the best possible results. I have many tintypes some are unidentified and some are so dark they are beyond identification or recovery. I hope this information will help.
