DAILY TIMES BEDFORD, INDIANA WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1927 WAR VETERAN IS CALLED BY DEATH Charles Gaines Expired Early Today At Home in Marion Township Charles Gaines 38 years old a World war veteran, died this morning at 6:40 at his home two miles north of Mitchell where he had been living with two surviving brothers, Everett and Frank Gaines. The widow and two small sons Eugene aged 2 and Carl 1 year old also survive. In addition to the aforementioned three other brothers and one sister survive. They are Henry and William of Bedford and Arthur of Toledo, Ohio and Mrs. Orval Lewis. The funeral will be conducted from the residence Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial will follow in Bass cemetery. At the outbreak of the late war the deceased enlisted August 5, 1917 and was assigned to Battery C, 139th Field Artillery. He was gassed while serving in France.
