Bedford, Ind., December 30 – Oscar J. Burton, former Government official with the Ordinance Department at Washington, D. C., and a native of Mitchell, Ind., died yesterday at the age of 89. During his work in Washington, he served under Presidents McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was transferred to the Ordnance Department from the War Department shortly after the Spanish-American War began. In less than a year he was placed in charge of Government property and was made a member of the Board of Accountability. Mr. Burton helped establish the audit Section, a new division during World War I, and he also was instrumental in organizing 14 new Ordinance districts. He died yesterday at the Stancombe Nursing Home near Bedford. His body was taken to the Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell where arrangements will be made for the funeral.
