BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, December 29, 1899 John S. Royer died at New Albany on the 2nd inst. At the breaking out of the Civil War he was a student at Indiana University, and he was in sympathy with the South. One morning the citizens of Bloomington were surprised to see the Confederate flag floating proudly from the dome of the University. John Royer had placed it there and then he had shaken the dust of the town from his feet. The flag was hurriedly hauled down and Royer was placed on the excluded list forever.
