    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, FEB. 8, 1901 DEATH OF JESSE A. MITCHELL. Jesse A. Mitchell, one of our most prominent citizens, died Friday morning at 5 o'clock, of grip and asthma, aged about 78 years. He was the father of Mrs. Alice M. Winstandley, Mrs. W. P. Malott, Mrs. Mattie Simpson; Robert, Jesse and William A. Mitchell; and had many grandchildren. His wife, one brother, Samuel Mitchell, and one sister, Mrs. N. M. Goodlett, survive him. Mr. Mitchell was for years one of the leading business men of Southern Indiana. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church conducted by Elders Small and Newland. Burial at Green Hill. ******************** The late Jesse A. Mitchell, of Bedford, who died several days ago, was well known among the older residents of Washington. He was one of the heaviest stock buyers in this section of Indiana. He formerly owned five hundred acres of land in Pike county but sold it several years ago to James R. Arthur, of Harrison township. – Washington Herald. ************************ Frank Malott, who came down from Indianapolis Saturday, to attend the funeral of his grandfather, Jesse A. Mitchell, Sunday, returned home Monday morning. ************* JESSE A. MITCHELL'S FUNERAL The funeral of Jesse A. Mitchell took place Sunday afternoon from the Baptist church. The audience that was present to pay the last fitting respect to the memory of this honorable man entirely filled the main part of the house. The singing was done by the male quartette of the Christian church. Rev. C. W. Chadwick led in prayer, and Rev. James Small preached the sermon. He said in part: "The short heart services which we are to hold today is not only to do honor to our brother that we loved so well but is out of deference to a large number of people who desired to pay their respects to the old hero and pioneer. I did not know," said Mr. Small, "our brother in his tender teens, nor teach able twenties, nor tireless thirties, nor fiery forties, nor forcible fifties, but I knew him in his series sixties and sacred seventies." Jesse Mitchell was a man that was loved and honored by many and I have asked myself since his death why was it so? I have selected as a text on this occasion the words of the wise man. "A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth." This was true said the speaker because death releases the soul and permits it to grow; it brings one nearer Christ and the friends that have gone on before. It brings eternal joy. Mr. Small spoke of Mr. Mitchell's character as an honest God fearing energetic hospitable and ambitious man and paid a tribute to him as a friend. The Masons of Bedford took charge when the preacher had finished. ************************* N. M. Goodlett and wife returned to their home in Evansville, Thursday. They were called here to attend the funeral of Jesse A. Mitchell. NOTE: Jesse A. Mitchell: 11 Sep 1822 – 1 Feb. 1901.
