BEDFORD MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 1901 Brownstown, Ind., April 1. – Aunt Betty Dowling, who bore the distinction of being the oldest spinster in the United States, died last night at her home near Sparksville, this county, aged 105. She was born in Kentucky in 1796, and came to this country 85 years ago, where she had since resided. She was never married, never on a train, and never had her picture taken until she was past 100 years old, when she consented to sit for a photo, which was reproduced with a sketch of the interesting old lady in the Enquirer. **************** WEDDLEVILLE Died – Betsy Dowling was born twenty miles from Louisville, Ky., in 1795, and came to Indiana when a child. Three families lived in the settlement where she and her parents moved. She lived in three counties, namely, Washington, Lawrence and Jackson. She had lived at the place where she died for 36 years. She became a member of the Church of Christ 46 years ago. Elder Daniel Sommer preached her funeral.
