Francis, on West 16th street, where she had been living since last October. The funeral occurred Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the residence of Mrs. Francis. Services by Rev. R. S. Hyde. Burial at Green Hill Cemetery. ************ FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1902 IN MEMORIAM Mrs. Emma Francis Reed, Wife Of Mr. John A. Reed, Of Minneapolis. Thursday afternoon the funeral services of Mrs. John A. Reed were held at 2 o'clock at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Rebekah Francis, Rev. R. Scott Hyde delivering the discourse. Mrs. Emma Francis Reed was born in Bedford and grew to womanhood here, and it was but fitting that she should come from her adopted home in Minneapolis, to be with the friends of her youth and her loved ones during her affliction, which had continued many months. Her fortitude was marvelous and was the one ray of comfort to her family and friends who watched and ministered every comfort human hands could devise and loving hearts could offer. Upheld by "The Arm Omnipotent" she passed triumphantly through the shadows, with a faith unshaken. Her gentle spirit was received by Him who gave it on Tuesday morning, April 9th, and her sorrowing husband and children, her mother, her brothers and sisters mourn for her they loved, but are comforted by the promises of Him in whose kingdom there is neither sorrow nor pain, but an "Unspeakable, great joy." "Nearer My God To Thee," and "Asleep In Jesus" were the hymns sung by the choir, and the tribute of Rev. Hyde was filled with the beauty of God's promises, whose reward is for those who trust him. He spoke words of consolation for each one of her loved ones and bade them emulate her example, by looking for the good intended in their affliction, which was sent by "Him who knoweth all and judgeth all,: He closed with the following tribute: OBITUARY. "Emma Francis Reed was born in Bedford, Ind., April 21, 1865. Early last Tuesday morning her spirit sought rest in flight. When but thirteen years of age she untied with the Methodist church here during the pastorate of the Rev. John Walls. At twenty-one she was happily converted to God. She was faithful in her attendance upon the services of the church, and for several years sang in the choir with melody in her heart unto the Lord. She was educated in St. Mary's School, near Terre Haute, and became accomplished in music and painting. Oct. 6, 1887, she was married to John A. Reed by the Rev. J. M. Stalker. To them were born two children, George and Francis, age 11 and 13, respectively, who with the husband, and her aged mother, Mrs. Rebecca Francis, and two sisters and three brothers remain to mourn her absence. For several years she made her home in Minneapolis and here her friends were many. She loved her home and justly prided herself in it orderliness and beauty. The charm and beauty of her home life was far-reaching in its influence; winning the praise and admiration of her neighbors and friends. For several months she was a great sufferer but never did she murmur or complain. Her patience was marvelous. She endured as seeing Him invisible. Unquestionably the secret of her strength was in the drinking deep at the fountain of divine grace, and in her implicit faith and trust in Him who giveth liberally to all and upbraideth not. Monday morning last she became conscious of the approach of dearth. She at once prepared to meet it as one going on a long journey. One by one she called in her relatives, then her family and gave to each her parting farewell. Her last words to her husband and the children will follow them through life as her last message of love. As the twilight of her life gathered, and merged into the deepening shadows of the night of death, she was heard to say: "I am going to Heaven. I am so happy." Such was her exultant feeling that had she possessed the strength, as she said, she could have sung her soul away to everlasting bliss. We reverently commend her spirit to God who gave it." A large number attended the remains to Green Hill cemetery, and the sympathy of the entire community goes out to Mr. Reed and children, to her mother, Mrs. Rebecca Francis; to her sisters, Mrs. Frank Reed and Mrs. John Malott; to her brothers, Mr. Eugene Francis, Mr. Charles Francis, Mr. Louis Francis, and other relatives. The perfume of the flowers which cover her grave are gentle tokens of the sweetness and fragrance of her life which will remain and abide with those she loved through all the years to come.
