    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, SEPT. 28, 1900 DANGEROUS CROSSING Causes the Death Of An Old Lady Friday Forenoon. Mrs. Samuel Massey, better known as Mrs. Cook, aged 50 years, was instantly killed by the north bound train, No. 6, on the Monon, last Friday, on the 5th street crossing, near Strout's foundry. She lived with her daughter on the corner of G and 4th streets, near the Belt tracks, and had been to Knight's store on 5th street to do some shopping. After doing her trading she started home, and as it is known that she was very deaf, the people of that neighborhood watched to see that she got across the Monon track safely, as it was time for No. 6 from the south. It seems that she had crossed the tracks and was near Strout's foundry, when for some reason, she turned to go back to the store and the train which was going at a good rate, struck her, knocking her several feet. Her neck was broken and also her right ankle, and death had occurred almost instantly. She was taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hitch, and a physician summoned, but he could do nothing as she was dead, and had been for some little time when he arrived. Coroner Voyles was notified. This crossing is the worst in the city, and the City Council had ordered the Monon and Southern Indiana Rys. To place watchmen there several weeks ago. At a recent meeting of the Council the S. I. was relieved from its share in the obligation, and then the Monon made a kick, as that company did not feel that they should be compelled to pay the entire cost.
