TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA AUGUST 3, 1981 After driving car in water Springville Man saves two lives, then drowns in Lake Monroe mishap A Springville man saved two lives and then drowned early Sunday morning at Lake Monroe after turning the Wrong direction on a boat launching ramp and driving his car into the water. Marlin Keith Owens, 22, pulled a mother and son from the sinking automobile and helped them aboard a nearby boat before losing his grip on the boat and falling into the water, the Monroe County Sheriff's Department said. Saved were Amy McCart 19, Bedford, and her one-year-old son, Corey. Owens slipped into the water after pushing the two aboard. He never resurfaced, police said. The drowning, the first this year at Lake Monroe, occurred about 1:45a.m. Sunday at the .Paynetown launching ramp. Ms. McCart told police Owens thought he was driving away from the lake and couldn't stop before entering the water once he realized he was heading the wrong direction. The car entered the lake at about 30 miles per hour, McCart said. Jerry L. Horn, Indianapolis, saw the accident from his boat and quickly maneuvered into a position where he could take the victims aboard. After hauling the mother and child onto his boat. Horn looked into the water to help Owens and couldn't find him, police said. Bloomington Fire Department rescue units, Bloomington Township Fire Department, Monroe County police and Indiana conservation officers began a search for Owens shortly after the drowning. Stephen McClain conservation diver, found the body at 3:20 a.m. Sunday. Monroe County Deputy Coroner Jim Kennedy pronounced Owens dead at the scene. Conservation Officer Marlin Dodge said Owens apparently couldn't swim or was too tired to swim. He was 10 feet of water and didn't appear to have been knocked from the boat or otherwise injured, Dodge said. Ms. McCart told a Times-Mail reporter this morning they had taken the wrong ramp as they were returning to a camping area from a drive-in theater, and the brakes failed as they neared the water. She said they put the child between them and could not open. the car doors. When the car reached the bottom of the lake, pressure was released and Owens "was able to open a door and bring Corey and I to the top of the car," she explained. Owens was born November 25, 1958 in Lawrence County, to Willie E. and Mary Katherine Allen Owens. He was an employee of Green County Fieldstone, Springville. He was of the Protestant faith.
