    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, SEPT. 21, 1900 FATAL HORSE RACE William Hubbard Killed At Oolitic Wednesday Evening. Some of the young men at Oolitic have been in the habit for a long time, of conducting horse races on the streets of the town. A number of accidents have resulted from this practice, and a few months ago a child was run over and seriously hurt. Still the races continued. Late Wednesday evening a race was in progress and Clarence Mathews, a young man about 18 years of age, who works at Smallwood's livery stable, drove his horse against William Hubbard. The latter was knocked down, and his head struck a stone, producing injuries from which he died at 12 o'clock that night. Mr. Hubbard, who was a citizen of Oolitic, was about 50 years of age, and left a family. The funeral took place Thursday at 3 o'clock from the M. E. church at Oolitic, Rev. William Russell conducting services. Mathews was arrested on a charge of manslaughter, and taken before Squire France, who placed him under $500 bond to appear fro preliminary examination Saturday. ***** The accident at Oolitic Wednesday, as a result of reckless driving on the street, causing the death of one man and great trouble to another, was well as pain and anxiety to the relatives of both, calls attention to the fact that there is a great deal of reckless driving on the streets of this city. This is especially the case on the new brick streets, which are used as speedways. There is the added danger of the horses slipping on these pavements, when driven at a high rate.
