BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, NOV. 9, 1900 The following sad news comes by cable to Washington and is briefly announced: "Gen. McArthur cables the death of Dr. Davis, formerly of Chicago. His dispatch reads: 'John G. Davis, Major and Surgeon, U. S. Volunteers, died at 1:58 this morning, of chronic Bright's disease.'" Maj. Davis was General Surgeon of the Monon road for many years, located at Bloomington about 5 years ago and owned what is known as the Woodward farm at Clear Creek. When the war with Spain begun he offered his services and was appointed a surgeon doing valiant service. At the close of the war he was made Chief Sanitary Officer at Havana, where he remained until last October. He then asked to be relieved and sent to Manila, where he has been since June. On his way from Havana to the Philippines he stopped in Bloomington and visited his old friends. His health has been poor most of the time since he went to Manila. For a time he was in that city and later was assigned to one of the outlying provinces. Dr. Davis was about 50 years old and leaves a wife and one child. It is probable the body will be returned to America for burial.
