    3. TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA JULY 19, 1972 ( Sept. 21, 1903 - July 18, 1972) Mary White Mrs. Mary A. White, 69, 511 Fifteen St., died at 4:20 a.m. yesterday at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She had been in failing health for four years. She was born to Willie and Stella parsley Rollins on September 21, 1903 in Greene County, Indiana. She married Thomas Ira White, August 4, 1923 and he preceded her in death. Surviving are the mother, R. 1, Bedford; seven sons, Noah F., Charles Ray and Clifford P., all of Bedford; William T. of Wabash; Elza E. of Brookville; Roy M. of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Thomas Ira of Terre Haute. Also three daughters, Mrs. Cliff (Elizabeth) Allen, Bloomfield; Mrs. Arthur (Zena) Pitts, El Paso, Tex.; and Rose Margaret at home. There are also surviving forty-three grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren. Other survivors are three brothers, Roy Rollins, Owensburg; Ray Rollins, Bloomfield; and Rex Rollins, Springville. Also, three sisters, Mrs. Wayne Fields, Bloomfield; Mrs. Clifford Covey and Mrs. Willie Wagoner, both of Bedford. She was a member of the Christ Temple Pentecostal Church in Bedford. The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Craig officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Mrs. Johnson passed away at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Mrs. Kenneth Chastain sang "Going Down The Valley" and "Beyond the Sunset" accompanied by organist Mrs. Fred Hardman. Pallbearers were Laverne Terrell, Charles Terrell, Foster Johnson, Charles Johnson, Leland Elrod, Burl Terrell, Jr., Don Terry and Ralph Johnson. Bedford, Ind., December 30 – Oscar J. Burton, former Government official with the Ordinance Department at Washington, D. C., and a native of Mitchell, Ind., died yesterday at the age of 89. During his work in Washington, he served under Presidents McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was transferred to the Ordnance Department from the War Department shortly after the Spanish-American War began. In less than a year he was placed in charge of Government property and was made a member of the Board of Accountability. Mr. Burton helped establish the audit Section, a new division during World War I, and he also was instrumental in organizing 14 new Ordinance districts. He died yesterday at the Stancombe Nursing Home near Bedford. His body was taken to the Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell where arrangements will be made for the funeral.

Died OCTOBER 10, 1954 Submitted by Cathy Beard beardc@indiana.edu<mailto:beardc@indiana.edu> HAVERLY, Ed Prominent Mitchell Mortician Develops Pneumonia Following Operation Ed Haverly, prominent Mitchell funeral director and past state representative from Lawrence County, died Sunday night in Dunn Memorial Hospital. The death of Mr. Haverly followed a two-week illness and came as a shock to many of his friends and former constituents. The seventy year old Mitchell mortician served in the State House of Representatives from 1947 to 1951, and was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination to State Senator in the recent primaries. His death was attributed to pneumonia which developed after an operation. He was admitted to the hospital for surgery on October 6. He died at 11:22 p.m. last night. Born May 16, 1884, Mr. Haverly was a native of Marion Township. His parents were Fred and Mary Ellen Knott Haverly of Lawrence County. In 1913, Ed Haverly married Rosa B. Murray, who preceded him in death in 1942. In 1946 at Thibodaux, Louisiana, he married Pearl M. LaGarde, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Lawrence and Lee, who are associated in the funeral business founded by Mr. Haverly. One daughter, Mrs. Robert Tindall, also of Mitchell, survive. There are six grandchildren. Ed Haverly was one of three brothers. Surviving are Rice and Arch Haverly, both of Bedford. A sister, Mrs. William Nickless, lives on R. R. 1, Mitchell. There are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. from the first Baptist Church of Mitchell, with Rev. Otto Duncan officiating. Mr. Haverly was a member of the First Baptist Church, and was affiliated with the Indiana State Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. Before entering the funeral business Mr. Haverly attended the Marion Teachers College, and taught school for a number of years in Marion Township. He attended the Askin College of Mortuary Sciences, and entered the funeral business at Mitchell in 1910. In addition to his career as a funeral director and his prominence in state Republican offices, Mr. Haverly was actively invested in farming, and owned some farm land in this county. The Sherwood-Ferguson & Speer Funeral Home of Bedford and the Leston Jones Funeral Home of Heltonville are in charge of the arrangements an will conduct the service. The body will lie in state at the Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell after 7:00 p.m. today, and will be taken to the church at 12:30 p.m. Thursday to lie in state there preceding the funeral hour. The casket will not be open after the services. Mr. Haverly will be buried in the Mitchell Cemetery.

Submitted by Cathy Beard beardc@indiana.edu<mailto:beardc@indiana.edu> BALDWIN, Anna (July 27, 1886 - March 1936) Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Haverly Mortuary for Miss Anna Baldwin, 49, who died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday in New Castle where she had been taken seven years ago to an epileptic hospital. The direct cause of her death was chronic myocardis. The services were in charge of the Rev. W. A. Sanders and burial was made in the Freedom Cemetery, located on State Road 37, south of here. The remains were returned here late Sunday night and remained at the mortuary until the funeral party left for the cemetery. The deceased was born in Indiana on July 27th, 1886, to Eli and Martha Baldwin and lived in and near here during the early part of her life. She is survived by seven sisters – Mrs. Fannie Wood, Mrs. Mary Tincher, Mitchell; Mrs. Velvia Chambers, Mrs. Lovia Chastain, of Bedford; Mrs. Manda Hill, Shelbyville, Ill.; Mrs. Laura White, Herrick, Ill.; and Mrs. Vada Chisham, of Orleans; and three brothers, Posey and Willie Baldwin, of Mitchell, and James Baldwin, living near Bedford.

    3. DAILY TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA December 9, 1959 Garofola Rites Set Mary Theresa Garofola, 230 Indiana Avenue, Oolitic, passed away at 5:08 pm. Tuesday at the Dunn Memorial Hospital, where she had entered the same day. She had been in failing health for 14 years. Mrs. Garofola was born in Italy in 1900 and married Joseph Garofola who preceded her in death on January 17, 1946. She was a member of the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Bedford. Surviving relatives include three sons - Frank and Joseph Garofola both of Bedford and Tony Garofola of Oolitic; two daughters - Mrs. Robert Mosier of Bedford and Mrs. Fannie White of Brookville, Indiana; one sister Fannie in Italy and eight grandchildren. Two daughters and one son preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:00 a.m. at the St. Vincent dePaul Church with Rev. Lawrence Weinzapfel, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. The rosary will be said at 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Friends may call after 7:00 p.m. today at the Day & Carter Mortuary which is in charge of arrangements.

Another photo Page 2) One Killed, One Hurt In East 50 Collision Thomas Ira White Is Year's 11th Fatality By RIC MANNING T-M Reporter A near head on collision yesterday on U.S. 50 in front of Giddens Pontiac-Buick took the life of one Lawrence County man and hospitalized another. Dead is Thomas Ira White, 63, R. R. 6 and listed in fair condition this morning at Dunn Memorial Hospital was Justice N. McCreary, 74, 1729 N Street. Police said White's 1965 Ford pick-up was eastbound on U.S. 50 at about 3 p.m. when he attempted to stop behind another car that was turning off the highway. The truck then slid broadside into the west bound land and into McCreary's 1967 Ford Station Wagon. McCreary's car left the highway on the north side and almost stopped on an embankment before continuing across the highway and a county road and through a stone fence before coming to rest on the Otis Park golf course 387 feet from the point of impact. White was thrown from his truck through the passenger door. He was pronounced dead at the scene from a crushed skull by Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Dr. Donald M. Kerr. McCreary suffered a concussion, facial lacerations, multiple contusions and abrasions and a possible back injury. Police said most of the damage done to his auto occurred when it went through the fence and not at the collision point. Witnesses told police the car that was stopped in front of White had its turn signal on. The death of White mark's Lawrence County's eleventh fatality of the year and the fifth in the past six weeks. White was a retired employee of Central Foundry. Mr. White was bon March 15, 1906 in Martin County, the son of Thomas and Hester Crane White. He married Mary Rollins August 4, 1923 at Shoals. Surviving are the wife; seven sons, William of Wabash, Ind., Elza of Brookville, Noah of the U.S. Army Germany, Charles of Mitchell, Paul of Alamogordo, N.M., two daughters, Mrs. Cliff (Elizabeth) Allen of Springville R. R. 1, Mrs. Arthur (Zena) Pitts of Bedford R. R. 6, one granddaughter, Rose Margaret White at home, 43 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, three brothers, Martin, James and Louis White all of Shelbyville, Ind.; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Sipes of Bedford and Mrs. Fred (Lois) Easton of Florida. A daughter Mrs. William (Anna) Starrett of Easton, Ind., preceded him in death. Mr. White was a member of Local 440, United Auto Workers and was president of the Retired Central Foundry Employees. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Rev. Henry Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call at any time Sunday at the funeral hour.

The body was removed to the Leston Jones funeral home at Heltonville for burial preparation. Funeral services will be conducted from the Heltonville Baptist Church at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon. A native of Lawrence county, Mr. East was born to George and Elizabeth Faubion East on February 10, 1879. He married Mellie McCammon in 1900, who survives Other survivors are a son, Coleman of Harrodsburg; five brothers, James, J. C. and Homer East all of Heltonville; Everett East, Bloomington, and William East, Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. Alpha Lively, Louisville, Ky., and three grandchildren. He was a member of the Heltonville Baptist Church.

R. 6 in the Fairview community. She had been in failing health the past ten years and her condition became serious four months ago. The body was brought to the Day-Carter & Roach funeral home for burial preparation and Thursday forenoon will be returned to the residence to lie in state until the funeral, arranged there at 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon with the Rev. Paul Sherrill, pastor of the Bedford First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be made in Cresthaven Memorial Park. Mrs. Todd was horn at Brownstown to Frederick and Eliza Hueller Stunkel on December 1,1864. Her marriage with McClellan Todd occurred at Brownstown on October 16, 1895. He preceded her in death May 12, 1935. She was a member of the Brownstown Presbyterian Church. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Hugh Curry, at home, and a Son, Dwight L. Todd, Leesburg, Florida.

R. 6, who died at James Whitcomb Riley Hospital in Indianapolis Sunday evening, will be conducted from Erie Methodist church at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon under the direction of the Day-Carter & Roach funeral home, with the Rev. NICKLESS DEAD Mrs. Judith Margaret Nickless, wife of Rufus Nickless, died at 6:30 o'clock Sunday evening at Dunn Memorial Hospital where she was admitted April 2. She had been in failing health since 1932 and her final illness was of only a week's duration. The remains were removed to the Sherwood & Ferguson funeral home for burial preparation and will lie in state there after 10:00 o'clock Tuesday forenoon. Funeral service will be held at the Sherwood & Ferguson chapel at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and burial will be made in the Cobb cemetery. The son (Daughter) of Josiah and Caroline Cobb Pierce, she was born in Perry township near Springville, March 30, 1866. Her marriage with Rufus Nickless occurred in Perry township in October 1887. Survivors besides the husband are a daughter, Mrs. Carl P. Sherwin, Scarsdale, N. Y.; a son, Arva Nickless, Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren, one great grandchild, a brother, Thomas Pierce, Fayetteville; a sister, Mrs. Emil Schmidt, Bedford, and a number of nieces and nephews. The brother, Arva Nickless and wife were in Bedford at the time of Mrs. Nickless' death, having been called here by the death of Mrs. Arva Nickless' brother, Rev. George Herman Sears, and are the guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Herschel Sears, 1221 Sixteenth Street. Mrs. Rufus Nickless was a member of the Old Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

The body was prepared for burial at the Sherwood & Ferguson funeral home and will lie in state there after 10:00 o'clock Tuesday forenoon. Funeral services will be conducted from the Sherwood & Ferguson chapel at 10:00 o'clock Wednesday forenoon and burial will follow in Green Hill cemetery. He was a native of Kentucky and was born September 3, 1868. He married Angie Lina Coyle at Berea fifty years ago. She preceded him in death in July 1934. He is survived by three sons, Roy C. Wood, Evansville; Clyde W. Wood, resident of the state of Florida, and Maurice C. Wood, Bedford; three grandchildren and a niece, Mrs. Claude Sageser, of Lexington, Ky. Mr. Wood was a member of the Berea, Ky., Presbyterian Church and belonged to the Leesville Masonic Lodge.

The remains were prepared for burial at the Clements Funeral Home and will lie in state there until the funeral, arranged for 2:30 p.m, (DST) Tuesday at the Clements Chapel, with the Rev. Leland Flew, pastor of the Mitchell First Christian Church, of which she was a member, officiating. Burial will be in the Mitchell Cemetery. The daughter of Lorenzo and Hanna Bass Ostrander the deceased was born in Rolla, Missouri, June 17, 1862. Her marriage with Joe Lindsey occurred more than 50 years ago. Survivors are a daughter, Miss Josephine Lindsey, and a grand daughter, Miss Ida Francis, both at home. Several children have preceded her in death.

The body was brought to the Day & Carter mortuary for burial preparation and will lie in state there until the funeral, arranged for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Springville Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Bridwell officiating. Interment will follow In the Springville Methodist Cemetery. The daughter of Granville and Alice Arthur, she was born in Greene county June 13, 1902. Her marriage with William Hollers occurred in April 1928. Survivors, besides the husband, are a daughter, Claris Hollers, residing in the State of Oregon, two brothers, Claude Arthur, of Owensburg, and Everett Arthur, of Springville R. R. 1, and a sister, Mrs. Bee Watkins, of Greene county. R. 2, whose death occurred at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Robert Long Hospital In Indianapolis, was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Springville Methodist Church under direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary. The rites were in charge of Rev. Ray Bridwell. "Some Day He'll Make It Plain" was rendered by A. M. Jackson; "Sunrise" was sung by Burgess Snow and Messrs. Jackson and Snow rendered "Beyond the Sunset," to piano accompaniments played by Mrs. Raymond Reynolds. Floral tributes were in charge of Misses Jewell Arthur, Carol Flinn, Devella Sullivan, Delores and Mae Glassco. Pall bearers were Pikie and Junior Arthur, Wayne Mikel, Ralph and Virgil Wadkins and John Harris. Interment was in the Springville Methodist Cemetery.

Martin, 71, died at 11:10 a.m. today at her home, 1402 U street, following an illness of four years. She had been seriously ill for the past year. She was born on November 8, 1875, north of Charlestown, Ind., the daughter Of Jacob and Malinda Prity Hartman. She was married on December 8, 1904, to Franch C. Martin. Surviving are the husband, a son, Athan Martin of Bedford; a granddaughter, Miss Elizabeth Ann Martin of New Symria Beach, Fla., and a brother, Charles L Hartman. The deceased was a member of the First Methodist Church here, the Order of Eastern Star No. 129 of Bedford, Tarum White Shrine No. 1. of which she was a past worthy priestist. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Sherwood & Ferguson Funeral Home. The body was taken to the funeral home and will be returned to the residence at 4:00 p.m. Sunday where it will lie in state until the hour of the funeral. Officiating at the funeral will be Rev. Ezra L. Hutchens. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery.

She had been an employee of Bemis Bag Co. retiring in 1969, She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and the Ernie Pyle Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the First Christian Church of Beech Grove and New Albany Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She was born in Paoli and had lived in Indianapolis since 1948. Survivors include two sisters, Bernice Duffy, and Mildred Jeski, and two brothers, Knofel and Cleon Mattox. Graveside services will be at Tuesday at Graceland Memorial Cemetery, New Albany. Friends may call from 2 to 9 pm. today at N. F. Chance Funeral Home in Indianapolis.

He was born Sept. 24, 1911, In Washington County, to Earl and Emma Wheeler Shoults. On Oct. 30, 1934. he married Pauline Myers and she survives. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church and a retired employee of the Washington County Highway Department where he worked for 22 years. After his retirement he worked for the Washington County Farm Bureau In Campbellsburg. Surviving with the wife are two sons, Leroy Shoults, Mitchell and Dwight Shoults, Campbellsburg; one daughter, Mrs. James (Betty) Roll, Pekin; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Carl Shoults, R. 3, Orleans, Lovell Shoults, Mooresville, Cecil Shoults, Campbellsburg and one sister, Mary Brown, Goodland. One sister and one brother preceded him in death. Services will be at 11 am. Wednesday at Mt. Carmel Christian Church, Bro, Joe Hollrah officiating. Burial will be to Dixon Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call at Chastain Funeral Home in Campbellsburg after 11 am, Tuesday. The body will be taken to the church at 10 am. Wednesday to lie in state until the funeral time. Pallbearers will be; Mike, Eddie, Tony, Aaron and Darron Shoults, and Jeff Souder.
