BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1899 Volney Beavers, a young man aged 20 years was accidentally killed while hunting Friday afternoon near his home eight miles east of the city. He fell down and the gun striking some obstruction was discharged, the contents taking effect in a vital spot, the young man dying a few minutes later in terrible agony. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Beavers and was a respected young man of his neighborhood. The funeral took place Saturday at 2 o'clock the burial taking place at the Fairview cemetery.

TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA JANUARY 6, 1964 Theodore L. Meadows Passes Away Theodore L. Meadows, Route 1, Heltonville, died at 6:30 a.m. today at Dunn Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for one year, final illness four days. He was born Mar. 19, 1913 in Monroe County, the son of David and Bessie Jackson Meadows. He married Cleo Faubion on Sept. 19, 1942 and she survives. Mr. Meadows was a former employee of Crane. Other survivors include three sons, Leo Dale, Teddy Gail and Billy Alvin all at home; four sisters, Mrs. Curtis Deckard of Springville, Mrs. Ralph Kinser of Ohio, Mrs. Roy Patton and Mrs. Walter Richardson both of Bloomington; one brother, Remus of Bloomington, Route 2; a half-brother, Sidney Meadows of Bedford, Route *. One sister and three brothers preceded him in death. He attended the Heltonville Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War Two. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Heltonville Baptist Church with Rev. James Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Gilgal Cemetery. Friends may call at the Jones Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today.
BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, AUG. 24, 1900 RAILROAD RACKET F. Taylor SMAWLEY, who had been the agent for the S. I. at Westport for several years, died at his home in that city last Saturday evening, after a long illness. Mr. SMAWLEY had been in poor health for many years, and his death had been expected for several weeks. He was a faithful employee, and had worked for several of the large railroads. He leaves a wife and many relatives. The funeral occurred at Westport this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Many railroaders, mostly employees of the S. I. and the Big 4 Rys. were in attendance.
DAILY TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1953 Bruner Services Conducted Friday Rites for Margaret Elizabeth Bruner of Lawrenceport, who died Wednesday, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Lawrenceport Methodist church by Rev. Max Nicoson. Mrs. Albert Kruchten and Mrs. H. H. Mourer sang "Face to Face" and "Beyond the Sunset" with Gene Johnston at the piano. In charge of the flowers were Ruth Ann Flinn, Janet Flinn, Jane Bruner, Betsy Bruner and Barbara Bruner. Serving as pallbearers were Lester Lowery, Frank Kearby, Everett Gleen Lee, Walter Jenkins, Louis William Brown, and Noah Bundy. Prayer was offered at the Sherwood & Ferguson Funeral Home by Rev Nicoson preceding the church service. Interment was in the Lawrenceport Cemetery.
DAILY TIMES MAIL BEDFORD INDIANA SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1953 City Native Dies At 71 Marshall L. Steele, 71, died Friday evening at his residence at 210 West Fourteenth street in Bloomington. He had been ill three years. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Effie K. Steele; three sons, Ralph and James of Bloomington and Fred of San Pedro, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Sarajane Bradshaw of Buckley, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. L. G. Holmes of Louisville and Edna Steele of Bedford; one brother, Jesse O. Steele of Louisville. He was a retired engine foreman with the Illinois Central Railroad. The decedent was at member of the Fairview Methodist Church, a past master of the Monroe Masonic Lodge and a past worthy patron of the Order Eastern Star. He was born in Bedford and was the son of Samuel and Alice Deckard Steele. Mr. Steele and his wife moved to Bloomington in 1912. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday at the Fairview Methodist Church with. Rev. W. N. Burton and Rev. R. C. Pierson officiating. Burial will be at Palestine, Ill. The body will lie in state at the Day Funeral Home after 7:00 p.m. today. Honorary pull bearers include: Robert Ingalls and Joseph Manzenberger.

R. 1, Mitchell. Mrs. Cooper was born May 7, 1884 to George and Mary Hughes and was married to Lawrence Cooper March 1, 1900. Her husband died in 1934. The last of a family of 14 children, Mrs. Cooper was a member of the Mitchell Methodist Church. Surviving are six sons, Yuless, and Walter Cooper, both of Indianapolis, Harvey and Robert Cooper, both of R. R. 1, Mitchell, and Raymond and Lester Cooper, both of Bedford: three daughters, Mrs. Everett Burton, R. R. 1, Mitchell, Mrs. Herschel Jones, Reelsville, and Mrs. Frank Bundy, Mitchell; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Sherwood & Ferguson Funeral Home and interment will be in the Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call at the home of Mrs. Everett Burton on R. DAILY TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1953 Fred Yeskie Dies At Noon Fred H. Yeskie, 1103 Lincoln avenue, 53-year-old Fabricast employee, died shortly before noon today at the Dunn Memorial Hospital. He had been ill since August. Mr. Yeskie, who was unmarried, was a native of Oolitic and was born August 3, 1900 to Fred and Amelia Yeskie. A graduate of Oolitic High Schoo1in 1921, he was an excellent athlete and for four years was a member of the varsity basketball team there. He served in the Army during World War II and was at the Aberdeen, Proving Ground. A member of the Gillen Post, American Legion, he also belonged to the Redmen Lodge, Tribe 281. Mr. Yeskie attended the Methodist Church and the Church of God, of Bedford. Surviving are three brothers, Louie W. Yeskie and Charles Yeskie, both of Oolitic, and Henry Yeskie of Bedford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but the Day & Carter Mortuary will announce the time of the service tomorrow. Interment will be in the Green Hill Cemetery.
DAILY TIMES BEDFORD, INDIANA WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1927 DEATH COMES TO ELKANA INMAN Funeral from Indian Creek Baptist Church Thursday forenoon Elkana Inman, 83 years old, a retired farmer, died at 11:40 o'clock yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ernest Hendrickson of Williams. He had been in ill health for some time due to the infirmities of his age. The funeral will take place Thursday morning at 10:30 from the Indian Creek Baptist Church where the deceased had been a life long member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Harvey Chastain will officiate. In addition to the daughter mentioned Mr. Inman is survived by his widow, three other daughters , Flora Craig, Bedford and Ida Hert and Miss Ada Inman both of Springville. Two sons Joel of Terre Haute and Arthur of Bedford also Survive as do two brothers Samuel and Clay Inman and one sister Susan Lamb.
DAILY TIMES BEDFORD, INDIANA WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1927 WAR VETERAN IS CALLED BY DEATH Charles Gaines Expired Early Today At Home in Marion Township Charles Gaines 38 years old a World war veteran, died this morning at 6:40 at his home two miles north of Mitchell where he had been living with two surviving brothers, Everett and Frank Gaines. The widow and two small sons Eugene aged 2 and Carl 1 year old also survive. In addition to the aforementioned three other brothers and one sister survive. They are Henry and William of Bedford and Arthur of Toledo, Ohio and Mrs. Orval Lewis. The funeral will be conducted from the residence Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial will follow in Bass cemetery. At the outbreak of the late war the deceased enlisted August 5, 1917 and was assigned to Battery C, 139th Field Artillery. He was gassed while serving in France.

Death was caused by a complication of diseases. She was the daughter of William and Minnie McNabb and was 20 years old. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church the Rev. Saul Rayborn officiating. In addition to her husband Mrs. Waldon is survived by her parents, two brothers, Carl and Harold and one sister Helen all of Bedford. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery. The deceased was married July 28, 1926

Helton aged 75 years, 2 months and 3 days passed away Sunday morning at 9 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Meadows, Second and P streets, following a cerebral hemorrhage suffered only a few hours previously. He is survived by the widow, one sons, Elijah Helton, of Bloomington; five daughters, Mrs. Edward Donica, of Logan; Mrs. Howard Tanksley of Heltonville; Mrs. Fred Browning, Mrs. Robert Meadows and Mrs. Grottie Todd of Bedford; one brother Mandille Helton of Lawrence county and one sister, Mrs. Katie Hendricks of Dugger. The remains were prepared for burial at the Robert Meadows home Sunday and this afternoon the body was removed to the home of his daughter Mrs. Fred Browning, First and P streets, Funeral services will be conducted from the Gilgal church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. A. J. Haste assisted by Rev. Isaac Hawkins and burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
BEDFORD DAILY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA NOVEMBER 22, 1917 "JACK" CLARK KILLED BY TRAIN AT EAST EDGE OF HELTONVILLE Veteran Of Civil War And Well Known Lawrence County Man, Met Tragic Death BODY WAS NOT MAIMED Was Walking Along Track And Swerved In Way Of Train Just As It Passed Him. A J, (Jack) Clark, aged 72 years was almost instantly killed at the east edge of Heltonville at 8 o'clock this morning when he was struck by the engine of Southeastern passenger train No, 4. Clark had been walking along the track towards the station, going in same direction as the train, presumably with the intention of catching the train to this city. As the train neared him he stepped upon a stone or for some reason swerved to the north and was struck by the engine as it passed. The body was thrown off the track and upon the rails of a side track running parallel with the main line, He lived only a few seconds. Conductor Griffeth and Engineer Rothrock were in charge of the train. The train Was stopped as quickly as possible and backed, to where the body lay. Rev. Elmer Norman, county recorder who was on the train. Was one of the first to reach the body and the first to identity it. A slight bruise on the face was the only mark those who reached the scene first could see. He gave a gasp as the first of the men reached him and it was the only sound that he made. When they turned him over he was dead. The body was p laced on a cot and taken to the station at Heltonville on the train that struck him. A. J. Clark was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Clark, pioneer residents of the county and had made his home in the vicinity of Heltonville all of his life. He enlisted in the Civil War when he was sixteen years of age and served through the war. Year's ago he operated a distillery and later became a farmer and stock man. He is survived by the widow, four sons and three daughters.
DAILY TIMES BEDFORD INDIANA MONDAY, November 17, 1930 HELTON RITES THIS AFTERNOON Prominent Marshall Township Resident Expired Saturday Night Sylvanus Mandeville Helton well known resident of Marshall township passed away Saturday night at 11:15 o'clock. He was born March 31, 1844 to Arnold and Elizabeth Robertson Helton, and at his passing he was 86 years, 7 months, 6 days of age. He was married to Elizabeth Meadows. To this union were born four children of whom the daughters, Margaret and Gertie have passed on. Surviving are the Sons Ellsworth and John Helton of Guthrie. He was a member of the Bartlettsville Christian church. The funeral was conducted this afternoon by the graveside in the Meadows graveyard by Rev. Claude Reuter. Burial was made in the Meadows cemetery.

Warren A. Sanders with Day & Carter in charge of the services. Death occurred following a short illness from complications. Burial was made in the Hopkins cemetery following the services at the home. Cynthia Jane Hatfield was born January 3, 1853 in Green(e) county to Mordici and Milley Richardson Hatfield and at the time of her death was 77 years, 10 months, and 12 days old. On March 25, 1871 in Green(e) county, she was married to William Brazzel, who passed away December 6, 1926. She was a member of the Baptist church of Greene county. Mrs. Brazzel is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Frank Weaver, of Oolitic; five Sons, Harve and Orley, of Oolitic; Dan, of Evansville; Elsworth and William, of Bedford; twenty-two grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

She had been ill since birth. The body was removed to the Roach mortuary for burial preparation and will lie in state there until the funeral. Funeral services will be held at Roach Chapel a 10 o'clock Wednesday morning in charge of Rev. A. L. Emmert, pastor of the Church of Nazarene. Burial will follow in the Beech Grove Cemetery. Besides the parents she is survived by a brother, Woodrow and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Helton, widow of Arnold Helton, who Passed away Saturday night at 7:15 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Homer Bates, 637 W street after a years illness with heart complications, will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Bedford Free Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Breckenridge cemetery. Following death the remains were removed to the Roach Funeral home for burial preparations and returned to her daughter's home Sunday morning to lie in state until the funeral hour. Mrs. Helton was born at Bartlettsville on March 22, 1871, to George and Catherine Deckard Covey and at the time of her death was 64 years, 5 months and 3 days old. She was married about forty-seven years ago. Thirteen Children were born to this union, seven of whom have preceded their mother to the grave. She was a member of the Bedford Free Methodist Church. Besides the daughter, she is survived by three Sons, Otto Helton, 617 W street, Dewey Helton, V street, Alfred Helton, Memphis, Florida ; two other daughters, Mrs. Frank Herrin, Washington, Ind., Mrs. Stella Cassaday, Cincinnati, Ohio eleven grandchildren, one adopted grandson; four great grandchildren; two brothers Perry Covey, Oolitic; and Oscar Covey, Bartlettsville; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Bartlett and Mrs. Sarah Kinser, both of Bartlettsville.
