    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1899 Killed By a Falling Tree L. D. Whitted better know as "Dow" and old and respected citizen of the eastern part of the county, near Fairview met his death in a peculiar way about 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. James K. Owens and William Lovall, of this city, have been cutting hickory timber in the Fairview neighborhood for William Jett and on Wednesday were felling a large Hickory tree on Mr. Whitted's place - one of 20 bought of him by Mr. Jett. Owens and Lovall had sawed the tree nearly through at the butt, and Owens was driving wedges in the cut to throw it to the north, when a gust of wind caught the large top and twisted it over to the southeast. Mr. Whitted and L. Montgomery both old men, were standing a few yards from the butt of the tree when Mr. Lovall shouted "Look out! Shes Coming!" Owens supposed the tree was going northward and continued to hammer the wedges until the tree almost touched his head when he looked up seeing his danger quickly stepped around to the opposite side, as he did ! so he saw Whitted and Montgomery running directly toward the spot to which the tree was falling. Owens called to them "Run for your lives!" Montgomery glanced back over his shoulder and taking in the situation turned swiftly to one side and escaped, but Mr. Whitted kept on and was caught almost under the center of the tree when it struck earth, the big limbs crushing him down. Owens was so absorbed by the spectacle of the fleeing men that he remained close to the stump and might have been killed if the tree had bounded backward, as they sometimes do. Whitted was extricated from the limbs and efforts made to revive him, but he was speechless and probably unconscious from the first, and died in a little over half an hour. his neck and one leg was broken, and he was probably also hurt in the back. He was 72 years of age. The family of the dead man were terribly shocked by his death and two female members of the household were ina dangerous condition last night but are better today. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 10 o'clock at Fairview. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1899 Rev. C. S.
