    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, MAY 30, 1902 Bloomington, Ind., May 28. – Irvin Seward, a veteran of the civil war, who died a few days ago figured in the surrender of New Orleans to General Butler, Seward was a member of the Twenty first Regiment band, organized at Bedford by Colonel McMillan, and the regiment served under General Butler. When it was known that Butler was about to attack New Orleans, the Confederate newspapers began deriding him, calling him "Picayune Butler," and had the bands of New Orleans play "Picayune Butler is Come to Town," a negro song that was common in the South. When New Orleans surrendered to him, Butler wanted the bands to play the tune as his army marched into the city. None of the Union bands had the music and Seward was the only musician in Butler's army who knew it. He whistled the air to the German leader of the Twenty first Regiment band, who arranged it for the different instruments, and the band played the old tune as it marched into the city behind the general of the army.

    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, MAY 30, 1902 Bloomington, Ind., May 28. – A boiler explosion in a sawmill at Mahalasville, Morgan county, at 8 o'clock this morning, resulted in the death of Watson J. Percifield and serious injuries to four other men. The mill was running, and it is supposed that Percifield, who was firing the engine, had let the water get too low in the boiler, which caused the explosion. Percifield was standing near the boiler and was hurled several feet. Both legs were blown off and his body was mangled beyond recognition, parts of it being scattered in all directions. The four men injured are Ed Townsend, Roy Lemon, Harry Lowry and William Wilcox. Wilcox is very dangerously injured and probably will die. Townsend and Lemon are seriously hurt, but may recover. Lowry is only slightly injured. Watson Percifield was about forty years old and leaves a widow and four children. He was a brother of Anderson Percifield, of Nashville. Another of the Lemon boys was in the mill at the time, but escaped without injury. The mill shed was almost demolished by the explosion. Mr. Wilcox formerly lived here. He was the owner of the mill.

    1. WALTER McAVOY - 1902
    2. Diana S Flynn
    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, MAY 30, 1902 Walter McAvoy, nineteen years old, was killed on the Monon track at Cloverdale yesterday afternoon in a peculiarly horrifying manner. He had been unloading elm wood poles from his wagon onto a flat car on the Monon side track, piling the wood against standards that kept it from getting off the car. One of the standards, however, was not strong enough to withstand the strain against it, and it gave way, letting the big heap of green timber down on the main track of the road. Some bystanders saw the danger of the collapse and realized the nearness of the fast north bound passenger train, and attempted to flag it, but too late to get it to a stop before it struck the heap of poles. Under these on the main track was McAvoy, who had stepped around the car to see what was going on, just in time to get caught in the entire mass. Friends attempted to pull him out, but the passenger train reached them before the effort to rescue him was a success, and the pile of poles and the young man were both thrown high into the air, and scattered over a large area. McAvoy was killed instantly.
