BEDFORD DAILY TIMES BEDFORD, INDIANA JULY 8, 1931 J.D. SHACKLETT CALLED BY DEATH Funeral Services From Springville Christian Church Thursday 2 P.M. Jesse D. Shacklett, aged resident of Springville, ten miles northwest of here, passed away Tuesday night at eight thirty at his home following a year's illness of heart complications. The deceased was born in Elizabethtown, Ohio, to John N. and Nancy J. Hardesty Shacklett on June 21, 1849, and at the time of his death was 82 years and 16 days old. On September 10, 1876, in Monroe county he was married to Miss Isabelle Armstrong, who survives him. Mr. Shacklett retried from active business life sometime ago. He was a devout member of the Owensburg Church of Christ. He is survived by the widow, one daughter, Mrs. Albert Short, and one granddaughter; Margaret Short, both of Springville. Following death the remains were removed to the Day &Carter funeral home where they were prepared for burial and were returned to the home this afternoon to remain until the funeral hour. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at two o'clock from the Springville Christian Church w! ith the Rev. Logan Hatfield in charge. Burial will follow in the Methodist cemetery at Springville.
BEDFORD DAILY TIMES BEDFORD, INDIANA MONDAY, MARCH 24, 1930 HOMER CHAMBERS CALLED BY DEATH Uncle Bedford Police Chief To Be Buried At Harrodsburg Tuesday Homer Chambers uncle of Mahlon Rainbolt, local chief of police, local chief of police, passed away yesterday afternoon at four o'clock at his home in the Popcorn neighborhood following an illness of several months from leakage of the heart. Mr. Chambers was the last of a large family which settled in the Popcorn neighborhood many years ago. He was sixty-nine years old at the time of his death. He was a lifelong resident of that neighborhood, having been born and reared there. He is survived by the wife Ellen, and other relatives. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Harrodsburg Methodist Church with burial in Harrodsburg cemetery.

ELIZA HILL CALLED BY DEATH Funeral Services To Occur From Popcorn Church Sunday Afternoon Mrs. Eliza Hill, 69 year old resident on the old Hiram Batman farm four miles east of Bedford, died at 2 a.m. today at the home of her son Hiram Hill, four miles north of Springville following a brief illness from complications. Mrs. Hill went to the home of her son about ten days ago for a visit and was taken ill shortly after her arrival. Thursday she was taken to the office of her physician in Bloomington for an X-ray examination and was returned to the son's home in the afternoon. The deceased was a daughter of the late Hiram and Catherine McKnight Batman and was born May 2, 1861 in this county. She was married to William Hill on December 25, 1891 and he died September 9, 1929. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Elmer Thomas; two sons, Hiram and Ira Hill all of Lawrence county; three sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Brown and Mrs. Robert Beasley, of this county and Mrs. Arthur Smallwood of Oolitic; four brothers, James Batman of Edna, Kansas; Ulysses, William and Bert Batman of Lawrence County and eight grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Linthicum, Monroe County. Funeral services will be conducted from the Popcorn Church at 2 p.m. Sunday and burial will be made in the Lowder cemetery nearby.

Sutherland, aged resident of Owensburg, who died at his home Thursday, have been set for 10 a.m. Sunday at the Owensburg Methodist Episcopal Church and burial will be made in the Springville cemetery. Mr. Sutherland had been in the employ of the Monon Railroad Company for a number of years as a tunnel watchman at Owensburg. He is survived by two sons, Platt, Washington D.C. and Curtis, at Owensburg, and one daughter Mrs. Mabel Ireland of Indianapolis.

Houpt, 32 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Houpt, died at his home near Avoca at 12:05 this afternoon following a lingering illness from pulmonary tuberculosis and Bright's disease. He had been bedfast for the past four months. He was born in this county July 20, 1897 to Walter and Mattie Gyger Houpt. He was united in marriage July 29, 1916 in Bedford to Miss Maggie Holmes. The widow, five children, Eva, June, Floyd, Betty and Lois, his parents, one sister, Mrs. Hubert Tinker and one brother, William Houpt, survive. The deceased was a member of the Avoca Baptist church and belonged to the Oolitic Lodge of Odd Fellows. Following his death the body was brought to the Day & Carter funeral home in Bedford and prepared for burial and will later be returned to the home. Funeral services will he conducted from the Avoca Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial will follow in the Lowder cemetery near Popcorn.

He is survived by the parents; two brothers and three sisters all at home, the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Sarah RITTER, and the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Rial HENDERSON. The remains were removed to the Jones Funeral Home where they were prepared for burial, and where they will lie in state until the funeral hour. The funeral will take place at the Gilgal Baptist Church Friday morning at ten o'clock. Burial will be made in the Gilgal cemetery.

Miss Perlina Jane HAWKINS, who had been in declining health for some time, suffering with carcinoma, having been bedfast the past year, passed peacefully away at noon Wednesday, at her home in Heltonville. She was born February 27, 1852 to William and Lydia GREGORY HAWKINS and at her passing was 79 years, 9 months and 5 days of age. All her life had been spent in the Heltonville community. She was never married. She was a devout member Of the Heltonville Christian Church. She was greatly beloved by her sister and brothers, and highly respected by all who knew her. She is survived by the sister, Mrs. Sarah E. BREWER and three brothers, David B., Andrew J. and John W. HAWKINS, all Of Heltonville. The remains were taken to the Leston Jones Funeral Home, prepared for burial and returned to the home last night where they will lie in state until the funeral hour. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Harry P. BRIDWELL of Clear Creek. Burial will be made in the Gilgal Cemetery.

Interment was in the Harrodsburg cemetery and the Harrodsburg lodge of Masons, of which Mr. TRISLER was a member gave the ritualistic work at the cemetery. HARDWICK Funeral From Avoca Pentecostal Church at 1:30 This Afternoon Mrs. Alta Pearl Hardwick, 42 years old, wife of Homer Hardwick, died at her home seven miles east of Bedford at 11:05 o'clock Tuesday forenoon following an illness since last July from carcinoma. Mrs. Hardwick was a native of Indiana having been born to John and Mary May Mann near Carpentersville July 31, 1887. She was married to Homer Hardwick in this city on February 17, 1915. She is survived by the husband: three sons, Lowell, Charles and Paul at home; two sisters, Mrs. Ray Amich, Indianapolis; Mrs. Ben Toole, near Carpentersville, and one brother, Lee Mann, near Waverly. Funeral services were conducted from the Avoca Pentecostal church at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon. Burial was made in Old Union cemetery, west of Bedford.

CHASTAIN Foundry Employe Succumbs To Pneumonia After Short Illness George Marion Chastain passed away at his home at Fourth and K streets this morning about six o'clock after a short illness with double -pneumonia. He was born to Westle and Mary Chastain December 30, 1874 and lacked but four days of being fifty-five years of age. He was employed at the Bedford Foundry and was highly esteemed by his co-workers as well as all who knew him well. He is survived by the widow, a daughter by a former marriage, who resides in Indianapolis, and a stepson, three brothers, Louis and Daniel Chastain of this city and Albert Chastain of Chicago, and five sisters, Mrs. Emma Tucker, Mrs. Ella Pearce, Janie, Esther of Indianapolis and Dora Chastain of this city. The remains were taken, to the Roach mortuary where they were prepared for burial. The funeral arrangements have not been made.

Hill of Pontiac, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. Helen Calhoun, of Bloomington, Ill., also survive. Funeral services will be conducted from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and burial will follow in the Lowder cemetery.

Quincy Short, one of the best known and most beloved women of her community, passed away last night at ten-fifteen o'clock at her home at Springville. Charity Alice Dye was born to Ira and Susan Ann Murray Dye, June the third, 1855, aged 73 years, 2 months, 21 days. In her early womanhood she was united in marriage to Quincy Short who was destined to become one of the outstanding ministers of the gospel of the Christian church in this county. She was a true and understanding helpmate and the children born to them were reared to a splendid maturity walking in the straight path that their parents had blazed for them. She was an ardent member of the Christian Church for the greater part of her life time, and was a fond and indulgent mother, splendid neighbor and friend. She is survived by four children Kenneth Short of Oolitic, Mrs. Thad Bridwell, of Avoca, Albert Short of Springville, Mrs. Ralph N. Tyree, of Bloomington, three sisters Mrs. Edward Sutherland of Owensburg, Mrs. Olive Holmes, of Mill Creek, Illinois, Mrs. William Gray of Springville, one brother Ira Dye, of Springville. A physician was called but life had passed from her body before he reached her bedside. The deceased was born in Indiana on February 12, 1872 and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Goldsby. She is survived by the husband, three Sons, Pete, Tom and William Panza, all of Bedford; two daughters, Mrs. Alfred Underwood, of Bedford and Mrs. Gus Aelio, of Kensmore, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. John Goldsby and Mrs. Arch Melvin, of Bedford two brothers, Horace Goldsby, of Bedford and Pete Goldsby of Indianapolis, and the aged mother who resides in this city. Ulysses Grant Storm who had been in failing health for a number of years with liver complications, passed away Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at his home in the Popcorn neighborhood. He was born July 10, 1868 to Isaac and Ellen Ketchum Storm and at his passing was 60 years, 3 months and 13 days of age. He was married to Miss Flossie Deckard. While no children were came to bless their union they lavished a parent's love on a niece and nephew, whom they took into their home at a tender age, and lovingly reared to maturity. They lived at one time on Fifth and N streets, while Mr. Storm was employed in the mills. They returned to their farm several years ago where they dwelt in happiness, until the spectre of disease laid its hand on Mr. Storm. He was one on the most prominent farmers of the Popcorn neighborhood and was very active in the affairs of the Popcorn Christian Church of which he was a devout member. The whole community will grieve with the widow, over his passing! . He is survived by the widow, the aged mother who made her home with him, the foster children, Michael Freeman, Mrs. John R. McPike, one sister, Mrs. Oscar Faucett, of Indianapolis, and two brothers, Everett Storm of Popcorn and Fred Storm of Harrodsburg . The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Logan Hatfield at the Popcorn Christian Church Thursday afternoon at two o'clock followed by burial in Lowder cemetery.

TOFAUTE'S FATHER AT ROCKVILLE Word has been received in this city of the death of Mr. Cyrun Bartley father of Mrs. Dan Tafaute of this city. He was one the the most prominent and influential retired farmers of that district. The last few years the family had lived in Rockville. He had been in failing health for some time and as his condition became critical last week Mrs. Tofaute was called to his bedside. Mr. Tofaute and daughters, Misses Helen and Katherine left this afternoon for Rockville to remain until after the funeral which takes place Thurday.

EMILY BYERS DEAD AT OOLITIC Funeral Services From Church of Christ Thursday Forenoon Mrs. Emily Byers who had been ill for over a year with complications passed away at three fifteen o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Ducker in Oolitic. She was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Byers near Bedford April 6, 1849 and was 78 years and 11 months of age. She was the widow of Lirey Byers to whom she was married February 26, 1871. He passed away a number of years ago. She lived for many years in Oolitic where she was known for her splendid characteristics, benevolence being an outstanding trait for it is said that she was one of the most devout church members, responded to or distress and was charitable to a fault. She was one of the first members of the Church of Christ of Oolitic. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Charles Ducker, of Oolitic; Mrs. Charles Miller of Clarenda, Ia., and Mrs. Homer Hackney of near Armstrong Station, a sister, Mrs. George Byers of Oolitic , and a brother Lincoln Byers of Oolitic, 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the Church of Christ at Oolitic Thursday morning at nine thirty o'clock followed by burial in the Lowder Cemetery near Springville. Byers / Beyers
