    1. WILLIAM HUBBARD - 1900
    2. Diana S Flynn
    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, SEPT. 28, 1900 OBITUARY. Again we have been called together to witness the last ceremonies over the remains of a neighbor, whose lamp of life has been extinguished in the noontide of his manhood. William Hubbard was born in Daviess county, Ind., and at the time of his death was 36 years, and 3 months old. He was married to Rhoda E. Smilley Aug. 15, 1883. To this union were born six children, one of whom has gone before. Two sons and daughters remain to mourn his loss. He united with the church in his fifteenth year and has ever since lived a Christian life. He has passed away amid family and friends to that heaven of rest, where sickness, sorrow, pain and death can never enter. No sex is spared; no age exempt. Death comes to us all, and makes us all equal. Every thing must perish, but there is a sweet assurance for those who die in Christ, that instead of being the end it is only the beginning of life eternal, and he has gone before to await our coming, when there will be no paring and no more tears. His face with its kindly smile we shall see no more. And as we see the vacant place may we fully realize the uncertainty of life. The wife and children have sustained a loss that is irreparable. They have the sympathy of the entire community in their hour of sorrow. Often from the heart will come the bitter cry, Why, oh, why, should our father die? Then comes the answer, so solemn and deep, "Children, your father is asleep."

    2. Diana S Flynn
    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, SEPT. 28, 1900 DANGEROUS CROSSING Causes the Death Of An Old Lady Friday Forenoon. Mrs. Samuel Massey, better known as Mrs. Cook, aged 50 years, was instantly killed by the north bound train, No. 6, on the Monon, last Friday, on the 5th street crossing, near Strout's foundry. She lived with her daughter on the corner of G and 4th streets, near the Belt tracks, and had been to Knight's store on 5th street to do some shopping. After doing her trading she started home, and as it is known that she was very deaf, the people of that neighborhood watched to see that she got across the Monon track safely, as it was time for No. 6 from the south. It seems that she had crossed the tracks and was near Strout's foundry, when for some reason, she turned to go back to the store and the train which was going at a good rate, struck her, knocking her several feet. Her neck was broken and also her right ankle, and death had occurred almost instantly. She was taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hitch, and a physician summoned, but he could do nothing as she was dead, and had been for some little time when he arrived. Coroner Voyles was notified. This crossing is the worst in the city, and the City Council had ordered the Monon and Southern Indiana Rys. To place watchmen there several weeks ago. At a recent meeting of the Council the S. I. was relieved from its share in the obligation, and then the Monon made a kick, as that company did not feel that they should be compelled to pay the entire cost.

    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, SEPT. 21, 1900 MITCHELL NEWS Captain Charles L. Barton dropped dead Sunday afternoon about 4 o'clock. He had been at church in the forenoon, eaten a hearty dinner and sat with the family chatting during the afternoon and about the hour mentioned started to go into another room when he fell dead. Doctors were hastily called but to no purpose, as life were extinct, the cause being heart disease. Charles L. Barton was a good man, an ardent Christian and a pillar of the Baptist church to which he belonged for many years. He had a good record as a Union soldier, having been Captain of Co. A. First Tennessee Vol. Cavalry. His age was 68 years and since the war he has resided in Mitchell, having engaged in the jewelry business with the late Dr. Samuel F. Martin. The Barton family during the last six months has had more to bear than usually falls to one family in that time; first Della Barton Palmer died, then Mrs. Barton's brother at Medora died and yesterday the father and husband. Mrs. Barton and the daughter, Mrs. Perry McBride and other relatives have the sincere sympathy of all in their terrible affliction. NOTE: Charles L. Barton: 17 April 1832 – 16 Sept 1900. C. A 1st TN Cav. Burial at Mitchell City Cemetery, Marion Twp.

    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, SEPT. 21, 1900 FATAL HORSE RACE William Hubbard Killed At Oolitic Wednesday Evening. Some of the young men at Oolitic have been in the habit for a long time, of conducting horse races on the streets of the town. A number of accidents have resulted from this practice, and a few months ago a child was run over and seriously hurt. Still the races continued. Late Wednesday evening a race was in progress and Clarence Mathews, a young man about 18 years of age, who works at Smallwood's livery stable, drove his horse against William Hubbard. The latter was knocked down, and his head struck a stone, producing injuries from which he died at 12 o'clock that night. Mr. Hubbard, who was a citizen of Oolitic, was about 50 years of age, and left a family. The funeral took place Thursday at 3 o'clock from the M. E. church at Oolitic, Rev. William Russell conducting services. Mathews was arrested on a charge of manslaughter, and taken before Squire France, who placed him under $500 bond to appear fro preliminary examination Saturday. ***** The accident at Oolitic Wednesday, as a result of reckless driving on the street, causing the death of one man and great trouble to another, was well as pain and anxiety to the relatives of both, calls attention to the fact that there is a great deal of reckless driving on the streets of this city. This is especially the case on the new brick streets, which are used as speedways. There is the added danger of the horses slipping on these pavements, when driven at a high rate.
