TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA MONDAY, NOV 27, 1961 Former Oolitic Man Dies In Gary Wreck; Three Are Hurt In Local Accidents Roger Worak Killed, Glen Mitchell, Charles Jenkins, Bud McDermed Hospitalized A former Oolitic man has been killed near Gary, Ind., and three other persons – an ambulance driver, his attendant, and a Route 2 motorist – were hospitalized here with injuries suffered in two separate local wrecks, one blamed on the other. Killed instantly when thrown from his car on Chase Road at the outskirts of Gary Sunday, was Roger Earl Worak, 26, son of Lewis Worak, 505 J street, and nephew of Times-Mail Accountant Paul R. Kern. Hurt in a wild set of mishaps on the Fayetteville Road about 1:30 this morning and later hospitalized were: Charles Jenkins, 31, 1213 Second street, multiple facial cuts and leg injuries. George N. (Bud) McDermed, 29, 1032 P street, his attendant, crushed foot and severe head an face lacerations. And Glen E. Mitchell, 22, Route 2, broken left leg and cuts. Twenty-six-year-old Worak, father of four, died of a broken neck yesterday to become one of 17 traffic fatalities recorded in the state for the long Thanksgiving Holiday. Information reaching the Times-Mail indicated Worak was starting to pass a car driven by Richard Harris of Hobart, also a former resident of the Bedford area, when the accident happened. Harris pulled out to pass another car, reports said, and Worak dodge, hitting some parked auto. The impact threw Worak out. He died of a broken neck, fractured skull and crushed chest. A passenger riding with him was not hurt. Funeral services for Worak have been set for 2:00 p.m. tomorrow in the Brady Funeral Home in East Gary, with burial following in Calvary Cemetery, there. Worak’s last address was listed as 440 North Liberty, Hobart. Relatives here said he was married in Oolitic on May 11, 1952, to Phyllis Kludt of Gary. She survives along wit four children- Roger, 8; Rodney, 7; Robert, 2, and Debra, 1. Other survivors include the father here; the mother, Mrs. Wilma Gilbert, East Gary; the grandfather, Frank kern of Oolitic; two uncles Arthur Kern of Indianapolis and Paul of the Times-Mail; an aunt Mrs. Leo Sears of Oolitic and one half-sister, not named. She had been in failing health for three months. Mrs. Bryant was born April 20, 1910 on Monroe County, the daughter of Ben and Mary Covey Southerland. She was first married to William Richard Long; her second marriage was Amon Bryant in 1934, who survives. Other survivors include, the mother of Bedford; three children by the first marriage; Violet May Ballard of Indianapolis, Annabelle Sykes of Lawrence County and Wilbur Dale Long with the U.S. Navy; two children by the second marriage, Harry Bryant, Oolitic, and Janet Roberts of Lafayette; a sister-in-law, Adele Southerland of Wilmington, Calif., 13 grandchildren; two brothers, Franklin Southerland of Calif., and Benny Southerland of Columbus and three sisters, Goldie Evans of Smithville and Estie and Lois Jones of Indianapolis. She was a member of the Oolitic Pentecostal Church. Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Oolitic Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Henry Skinner and the Rev. Elmer Patton officiating. She had been in failing health for three months. Mrs. Kern was born January 16, 1900 in Howard County, Kentucky, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Childers Taylor. She was married to Labon Kern April 19, 1924, who survives. She had been in failing health four weeks. Mrs. Nikirk was born August 2, 1865 in Monroe County, the daughter of William and Sophia Kinser Miller. She was united in marriage to Homer McClellen Nikirk, who preceded her in death September, 1930. Survivors include four sons, William Nikirk, Route 2, Bedford, Isaac Nikirk, Oolitic, David Nikirk, Route 2, Bedford and Theodore Nikirk, at home; one daughter, Mrs. Luda Broglin of Heltonville; one brother, David Miller of Heltonville; 36 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Death followed a lengthy illness. A retired stone carver, Mr. McArthur was born August 12, 181 in Georgia the son of Rufus and Angeline McArthur. He was united in marriage to Neva Pasco, who survives. Other survivors include one son, Gordon with the US Air Force in Spain; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Ruth Cutler of Nebraska, Mrs. Louise Lively of Route 1, Heltonville, Mrs. Bessie Mae Moore of Center Point, Indiana and Pearl Marie McArthur of Quincy, Indiana; three brothers, Robert, B. Mr. Giles purchased the 400 Cab Company from Morris Denny in April of 1951 and operated it until ill health forced him to retire from the business about a year ago. Prior to his association with the taxicab business, Mr. Giles was a salesman. The body will be returned to Bedford for funeral services and burial and complete details and funeral arrangements will be announced tomorrow by the Day & Carter Mortuary. DAILY TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1954 Paul Giles Rites Set Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow at the Elmwood Chapel of the Day and Carter Mortuary for Paul Giles, Bedford Heights, who died yesterday morning at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Paul Giles had been ill one year, and was admitted to the Indianapolis hospital on June 22 of this year. Ill health forced Mr. Giles to retire from operation of the 400 Taxicab Company here. Before entering the taxi business he was western representative for the Rilling Manufacturing Company of New York City. Mr. Giles was a native of this county, born June 21, 1913 to Mark and Goldie Holmes Giles. He was married to Myrtle Armstrong April 1, 1945. His wife survives. Also, surviving are one sister, Mrs. T. H. Owens Jr.; of R. R. 1, Bedford the stepmother, Mrs. Mark Giles; and a nephew Jimmy Paul Owens of R. R. 1. Mr. Giles was a member of the First Baptist Church. The services will be conducted by Dr. J. W. Nivan and Rev. H. Gordon. Burial will be at Springville Christian Cemetery. Friends may call at the Day and Carter Mortuary after 6:00 p.m. this evening.

DAILY TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA MONDAY, JUNE 23, 1969 Mrs. Giles Director Of Band, Dies Mrs. Myrtle Giles, 64, band director and music teacher at Oolitic High School for 27 years died at 8:50 a.m. today at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was a resident of Bedford Heights. Mrs. Giles had been in failing health for several months and was able to teach only the first nine weeks of the 1968-69 School year. She was born at Silverville the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Opal Armstrong. She was a graduate of Bedford High School and received her degree in Music at Indiana University in 1937. She began teaching at Oolitic in 1942 and continued at that School throughout her career. Bands of Mrs. Giles were outstanding and won several contests A few years ago she took the Oolitic band to Holland, Mich., where it participated in the tulip festival. Her bands appeared twice in the 500 Festival parade at Indianapolis. They also appeared at the Persimmon Festival at Mitchell, the Ellettsville fair and at other similar events. She was the widow of Paul Giles. Funeral arrangements and additional details will be announced tomorrow by the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.

Mark Giles passed away this morning at 2 a.m. at his residence, 1027 Q street, after a brief illness. He was born March 28, 1886 at Springville to Mack and Minnie Davis Giles. He married Goldie Holmes, who preceded him in death in 1919. Later, he married Margaret Meyers Bowden on March 5, 1922. The former machinist was a member of the Gullet's Creek Baptist Church at Needmore and belonged to the Machinist's Union, Local 599. Survivors are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Owens, Jr., Bedford; one son, Paul Giles, Bedford; one stepson, Lester Bowden, Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Dennis Blackburn and Mrs. Elmer H. Johnson, both of Bedford; one grandson, Jimmie Owens, and several nieces and nephews. ., Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Sherwood & Ferguson Funeral Home with Rev. Melvin Miller officiating. Interment will be at the Springville Christian Cemetery. The body was removed to the funeral home for burial preparation and will lie in state there after 6 p. m. today. Born Jan. 30, 1912, he was the son of George and Agnes (Mooney) McElhinney. He was retired from Thrasher Hardware and Alexander Electric. Survivors include his wife Dorothy J. (Burks) McElhinney; two daughters, Beverly Kay Freeman of North Salem and Tana D. McElhinney of Bloomington; three sons K. Dean McElhinney, G. Lane McElhinney and Nyle L. McElhinney, all of Bloomington; one brother, Bob McElhinney of Florida; two sisters, Lois Dickson of Virginia and Jane McElhinney of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son Terry McElhinney and two brothers Ray McEhinney and Bruce McElhinney. Services Will be 10 a.m. Tuesday

    3. TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1996 Paul Houchin, 89, of Bloomington, formerly of Mitchell, died Saturday at Fontanbleu Nursing and Rehab Center. Born Dec. 27, 1906, In Brownsville, Ky., he was the son of Andrew and Ruby Frances (Roof) Houchin. He was a retired cement mason and member of Minerva Masonic Lodge 98 at Miamisburg, Ohio. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Terrell of Bloomington and Frances Mesarosh of Dayton, Ohio; four sisters, Lula Grogan and Maxine Taflinger, both of Mitchell, Wanda Stigall of Oolitic and Clorine Sanders of Ellettsville two brothers, Earl E Houchin and Max Houchin, both of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife. Jewel (Jeffries) Houchin, three brothers, one sister and one grandson. Services will be l p.m. Tuesday at Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell with the Rev. Glenn Hamer officiating. Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call 2- 8:30 p.m. Monday and from 11 am. until services Tuesday at the funeral home where Masonic memorial services will be conducted 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Born Dec. 17,1910, in Lawrence County, he was the son of William Blackwell. He was a retired farmer, an Army veteran and member of Hillcrest Christian Church. Survivors Include his wife, Florence Elsie Blackwell one stepson, Charles Baxter of Williams; three brothers, Wayne Blackwell of Oolitic, Morris Blackwell of Bloomington and Norman Blackwell of Bedford; two step-grandchildren and six step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Services will be 11 am. Monday at Day and Carter Mortuary in Bedford with Bob Muncy and Charlie Scott officiating. Burial will be at Springville Christian Cemetery. Friends may call 2-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
