He was born April 17, 1920, in Martin County, Ind., to Marlin J. and Nellie Crane Hert. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Worth (Luella) Pearson, and Mrs. James (Joanne) May, both of Springville, and Mrs. Charles (Kathleen) Mitchell, Edinburg. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served three years, and a farmer most of his life. She was born in Blanden, North Carolina, Oct. 28, 1893, to Andrew F. and Sarah Benson Burney. She first married Homer Hester on June 18, 1918, and he preceded her in death Nov. 11, 1933. She next married Clarence C. Stroman Dec. 1, 1958, and he died in Feb., 1966. She was a retired beautician, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Orangeburg, S. C.; Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), and Colonial Dames XVII Century Society. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Loren (Sarah) Joseph, Bed ford; two granddaughters, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by eight brothers and one sister. funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Carter Funeral Home an Clarkton, N. C., with burial in Clarkton. TIMES MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1975 Mabel Mathews, 89, who was living with a daughter at R. 1, Bedford, died at 5:40 a.m. today at the Bedford Medical Center where she was admitted Tuesday. She had been in failing health a few months and critically ill for three days. She attended the Oolitic Church of Christ. She was born at Oolitic on Dec. 8, 1885, a daughter of Gillman and Etta Giles Hennon. She married Patrick Mathews who passed away in January, 1919. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Elbert (Thelma) Hubbard of Bedford; one sister, Mrs. Violet Hubbard, Bedford; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A son, Wayne, and two sisters, Cecil and Dessie, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Friday at Day & Carter Mortuary with burial in Springville Christian Cemetery. He was born in Danville, Ill., Jan. 5, 1913, the son of William Henry and Florence Smith Hammons. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Paoli and a former tree surgeon for Asplundh Tree Surgery in Jenkintown, Pa. He is survived by four sons, Kenneth, Indianapolis, Alvin, Bloomington, Everett and Tommy, both of Paoli; two daughters, Mrs. Florence Wineinter, Paoli, and Mrs. Sharon Robin Brockenbush, Indianapolis; several grandchildren; one brother, Charles Hammons, Orleans; four sisters, Mrs. Bertie Schloot, Bedford, Mrs. Otis (Flossie) Piatt, Medora, Mrs. Iva Preston, Twin Lakes, Mich., and Mrs. Vera Gilbert, Brazil, Ind. Mrs. Miller, a native of Lawrence County, was born Aug. 24, 1898, to Chris and Rose Southern Meadows. She was married Oct. 16, 1916, to Arthur Lewis, who died Dec. 26, 1947. She then married Odes M. Miller, Oct. 16, 1958. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church of Bedford and the church W. M. S. Survivors include the husband; one son, Robert Dale Lewis, R. 4; two daughters, Mrs. Noah (Juanita) Henschen of Bedford and Mrs. Charles M. (Loretta) Canada of R. 1; one step-son, Kenneth Miller of R. 4, and one step daughter, Mrs. Russell (Marceal) Miller of Bedford. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Acie (Chloe) Deckard of Bedford, Mrs. Helen Lanam of Bloomington and Mrs. Ralph (Ruth) Young of Knoxville, Tenn.; five brothers, Clarence Meadows and Morrell Meadows, both of Bedford and Floyd Meadows, Delbert Meadows and Harold Meadows; all of Bloomington six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am. Friday at the Free Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Chestnut officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery under the direction of the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Born in Monroe County and formerly of Paynetown, he was the son of Mallie May and Martha Wilkerson. He married Eunice Shepherd Feb. 27, 1940 and she survives. He was a farmer and of the Pentecostal faith. Surviving with the wife are one daughter Mary Jane Young, Bed ford; five sons: James L. May, Sterling, Colo., Cecil W. May, Colorado Springs, Colo., Roger L. May, David L. May and Henry E. May all of Springville; 18 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one brother Marvin E. May, Springville. He was preceded in death by one sister Alta Rogers and five brothers: Alva, Delbert, Denny, Melvin and Lester May. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. She had been ill several years and lived with her daughter in Tipton three years. She was born Dec. 13, 1887 in Avoca, to Findley and Nancy Bennett Gyger. She married Elmer Miller and he died in 1942. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Glenn (Marjorie) Artis, R. 3, Tipton; two sons, Dale F. Miller, and Marvin W. "Bill" Miller, Bedford; 11 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 29 great great-grandchildren. She was the last of her family. One son, Don Miller and one daughter, Thelma Evans are deceased. Born Sept. 7, l938 in Morgan County, he was the son of Earl and Christine (Shields) Reed. He was a carpenter and was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 546, the American Legion Post 22, the National Rifle Association. He also was a member of the Lyons Community Church. He was a Marine veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Mary (Byer) Reed of Linton, three sons Rex Reed Jr., David Reed and Steve Sexton, all of Linton; two daughters Lora Allen and Sally Moore both of Linton; two brothers, Ray Reed of Muncie and Wayne Reed of Linton; two half brothers Shields Dorsett of Illinois and Ralph Dorsett of Tampa, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren. Born Nov. 24, 1906, in Orange County, he was the son of B.F. and Eliza (Walters) Johnson. He was a retired farmer and mechanic. He was a member of Rob Morris Masonic Lodge 282 in Campbellsburg. Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Carroll of Orleans and Esther Hawkins of Mitchell; three sons, La Rue Johnson of Mitchell, Frank Johnson of Fort Angeles, Wash., and Leon Johnson of Greensburg; one sister, Mary Whiteman of Syracuse, 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fay Stephenson, and two brothers. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the memorial chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell with brother Nelson Lee officiating. Burial will be at Liberty Christian Cemetery. He retired from the military after serving in World War II and the Korean War.
