    1. LEVI FRY - 1901
    2. Diana S Flynn
    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, FEB. 8, 1901 Levi Frye, an old and respected citizen of this county living 7 ½ miles northeast of this city, died Sunday night at 8 o'clock, of pneumonia, at the age of 75 years. The funeral services were held Tuesday forenoon at 12 o'clock, at Bugg's Chapel. Interment at the cemetery near that place. *************** FEB. 15, 1901 Misses Lydia and Nannie Frye, who live in the country north of Bedford, are both seriously ill with pneumonia. Their father, Levi Fry, died several days ago of the same disease. **** OBITUARY. Henry and Sally (Ikerd) Fry, natives of North Carolina, came to this county about the year 1818, settled four miles north east of this city. They were of German descent, industrious and thrifty. Levi Fry, the subject of this sketch, the fifth of eleven children, was born in this county, March 3, 1825. Died Feb. 3, 1901, and was 75 years and 11 months old when he died. He was raised on the farm, used to hard work and the hardships incident of the pioneer life. His education was of the common schools of that age. He was a man that read the papers and was well posted on all the great questions of the day. He served as Justice of the Peace for many years, acquiring the title "Esquire Fry," by which he was called till the day of his death. Nov. 9, 1848, Elizabeth Ikerd became his wife. To them were born five children, three of whom are living. Mrs. Fry died Dec. 13, 1862. On April 24, 1864, Miss Mary Smith became his second wife. To this union nine children were born, all of whom survive. Of this large family twelve remain five boys and seven girls. In 1863, while Eld. Milton Parks was preaching at the Edwards school house, Bro. Fry united with the Baptist church, and was baptized in Pleasant Run, near the Virgil Fish farm. He continued to hold membership in the Baptist church to the close of life. Mr. Fry was a man of strong convictions, had great influence over his intimate friends, as he was well posted in the doings of the day, his counsel was good. He was a Democrat in principal, but loyal to the core. If he differed with a man, he differed kindly. To sum up, Mr. Fry was social, clever and benevolent. In distress and affliction he was as a brother. As a citizen he was enterprising. And it is remarkable how he retained his faculties to the last, being so old. Mr. Fry will be missed in his community more than any other man that has passed away for several years. His health had been failing for several years, and being feeble, was in no condition to resist an attack of pneumonia. After the fever set in he went down rapidly, and death came to his relief at 9:00 p.m. Sunday. He gave his family great comfort in his parting words. He told them that he was going home and now we hope that the family circle will be reunited, when they shall all reach Heaven at last. The children living in Kansas, Mrs. J. Long, Mrs. Wm. Sable, and John and Willis Fry, were informed of the probable death of their father in a few hours, but none of them were able to get here. Levi Alexander, of Kahoka, Mo., a name-sake of his uncle Levi, arrived a few hours after he was buried. Those left to mourn are his wife, twelve children, three sisters, Mrs. A. Schafer, of Bedford, Mrs. Malicot, of Iowa, and Mrs. J. Luther, of Marion county, Ind., and many grandchildren. The funeral took place at the Mt. Pleasant church, conducted by Eld. John Williams, and in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Farewell our good friend. J. W. NOTE: Levi Fry: 3 March 1825 - 2 (3) Feb. 1901. Burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Marshall Twp.

    1. JESSE A. MITCHELL - 1901
    2. Diana S Flynn
    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, FEB. 8, 1901 DEATH OF JESSE A. MITCHELL. Jesse A. Mitchell, one of our most prominent citizens, died Friday morning at 5 o'clock, of grip and asthma, aged about 78 years. He was the father of Mrs. Alice M. Winstandley, Mrs. W. P. Malott, Mrs. Mattie Simpson; Robert, Jesse and William A. Mitchell; and had many grandchildren. His wife, one brother, Samuel Mitchell, and one sister, Mrs. N. M. Goodlett, survive him. Mr. Mitchell was for years one of the leading business men of Southern Indiana. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church conducted by Elders Small and Newland. Burial at Green Hill. ******************** The late Jesse A. Mitchell, of Bedford, who died several days ago, was well known among the older residents of Washington. He was one of the heaviest stock buyers in this section of Indiana. He formerly owned five hundred acres of land in Pike county but sold it several years ago to James R. Arthur, of Harrison township. – Washington Herald. ************************ Frank Malott, who came down from Indianapolis Saturday, to attend the funeral of his grandfather, Jesse A. Mitchell, Sunday, returned home Monday morning. ************* JESSE A. MITCHELL'S FUNERAL The funeral of Jesse A. Mitchell took place Sunday afternoon from the Baptist church. The audience that was present to pay the last fitting respect to the memory of this honorable man entirely filled the main part of the house. The singing was done by the male quartette of the Christian church. Rev. C. W. Chadwick led in prayer, and Rev. James Small preached the sermon. He said in part: "The short heart services which we are to hold today is not only to do honor to our brother that we loved so well but is out of deference to a large number of people who desired to pay their respects to the old hero and pioneer. I did not know," said Mr. Small, "our brother in his tender teens, nor teach able twenties, nor tireless thirties, nor fiery forties, nor forcible fifties, but I knew him in his series sixties and sacred seventies." Jesse Mitchell was a man that was loved and honored by many and I have asked myself since his death why was it so? I have selected as a text on this occasion the words of the wise man. "A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth." This was true said the speaker because death releases the soul and permits it to grow; it brings one nearer Christ and the friends that have gone on before. It brings eternal joy. Mr. Small spoke of Mr. Mitchell's character as an honest God fearing energetic hospitable and ambitious man and paid a tribute to him as a friend. The Masons of Bedford took charge when the preacher had finished. ************************* N. M. Goodlett and wife returned to their home in Evansville, Thursday. They were called here to attend the funeral of Jesse A. Mitchell. NOTE: Jesse A. Mitchell: 11 Sep 1822 – 1 Feb. 1901.

    1. WILLIAM A. DAGGY - 1901
    2. Diana S Flynn
    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, FEB. 8, 1901 DEATH OF WILLIAM DAGGY. William Daggy, an old and respected citizen, died Saturday at 2:30 a.m. He was in his 80th year, and had been an invalid for some time. The funeral took place from the home Monday forenoon at 10 o'clock, services conducted by Elder James Small. Burial at Green Hill. ********* WILLIAM DAGGY'S FUNERAL The funeral of Mr. W. A. Daggy took place Monday a.m. at 10 o'clock from the home on 13th street. The songs were appropriate for the occasion and there was quite a large number of people present to pay their respects to this honored citizen and Christian. Elder Small spoke, paid a tribute to his life in the words of Paul and he being dead yet speaketh. This scripture is a testimony to the immorality of a great faith. "One man with a belief is equal to a hundred men with only interests." A genuine human life flows on beyond its coast. As far out at sea, off the mouth of a great river out of sight of land, the sailor lifts from the vessel's side his bucket of sweet, fresh water from the midst of the salt ocean, so the life we study this morning has had its influence and will flow out long after his body has moldered to the dust. His faith speaks of the gospel's power over men. "Our little systems have their day, They have their day and cease to be, They are but broken light of thee, But thou O Lord art more than they." It speaks of honesty and patriotism and goodness and courage. An old naval captain, who had fought under Lord Nelson, said to his son a short time before his death, "Charles, when I am dead, examine my body and you will find many scars, but you will not find one on my back." Would that every Christian could say the same. "I have fought the good fight, I have resisted sin though thick and thin, I have ever played the man of Christ." The remains were taken to Green Hill.
