BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, NOV. 23, 1900 John BENNETT Held Up At Terre Haute. Terre Haute Express says: "John BENNETT, of Bedford, who is employed on the Southern Indiana railroad, and while here is living at 1419 College street, was held up in the E. & T. H. yards at 6:39 o'clock yesterday evening while on the way to his room. The highwayman was one of the boldest that has ever worked in this city, as the path along the tracks in the E. & T. H. yards is used by several hundred people each night as they go home from work between 6 and 7 o'clock. BENNETT states that he had reached the stalls used by the railroad company for loading cattle just south of Poplar street when a large colored man jumped in front of him and placing a gun in his face demanded everything he had. The electric lights were out and as BENNETT was unable to see whether or not there was any chance of help being close at hand he surrendered $7.15, together with his tobacco. When the colored man was satisfied that he had secured everything of value he ran away. BENNETT did not report his loss until 1 o'clock when he met Policeman Steve CLARK and told him of the hold-up. He describes his assailant as heavy-set, wearing a light brown suit and a slouch hat. The colored man was very black according to BENNETT's account."
