Hello Fellow Researchers, I am researching Moberly (variant spellings are Mobley, Mobly, Mobberley, etc.). This is a good idea! Perhaps we should do it every once in a while so that newcomers can see what names are being researched by subscribers. It's amazing how many of these names I recognize as perhaps having some remote connection to Robert Moberly. These same surnames seem to occur in many of the places Robert Moberly lived before he came to Lawrence Co., or in Martin Co., IN where he moved after a short stay in Lawrence Co., and where his children lived after his death. Robert was probably born in Fairfield Co., SC, moved with his parents to Warren Co., KY, seems to have left there shortly after his marriage and settled in Lincoln Co.,TN. From there he probably went directly to Lawrence Co. (between 1830 and 1840). I wonder if he traveled with other families going to Lawrence Co.? I don't know where the COX families who settled in Lawrence Co. came from, but Robert's sister, Rebecca married Burwell Cox, son of John P. Cox and Sarah NUNNALLY, and James Moberly (cousin? of Robert) married Betsy Cox. Both marriages took place in Warren Co., KY. Robert seems to have settled in the part of Lawrence Co. where the Cox's settled. The CHAPMAN family seems to be associated with Cox and Moberly in Fairfield Co., SC and in Warren Co., KY. Frank PITMAN took in Frank Moberly, orphaned grandson of Robert Moberly. Jacob VEST married Hester Ann Moberly, granddaughter of Robert Moberly and sister of Frank. When Sarah (Calvin) Moberly, wife of Robert's son Erwin, and mother of the above mentioned Frank and Hester Ann, died, part of her crops were at Peter TERRELL's and Peter and another Terrell (whose name I don't recall offhand) bought several items when her property was auctioned. This was in Martin Co. The given names-Winchester, Erwin (Irwin), Fanning, and Hannigan-of some of the male Moberly's appear to be surnames, but these names are not found in the Moberly line as wives' maiden names. Perhaps they were the surnames of friends and neighbors. There's no telling how many of our ancestors were acquainted with each other, or how many decided to settle in Lawrence Co., because friends and relatives had already settled there! Carol
