Here is a good web site if you are trying to locate anything like a town, cemetery, church, etc. All you have to do is enter the feature name and the state, then select "Send Query." When the page returns, scroll down and click on "View USGS Digital Raster Graphic (DRG)" to see a topographic map showing your selection. On the left side of the screen, you can switch between "topo map" and "aerial map", and you can change to "medium" or "large" view. As an example, my ancestor was born on Spring Gap Mountain near Paw Paw Ridge in what was known as Hampshire County, Virginia in 1775. I just entered Spring Gap Mountain as the feature name and also did the same thing for Paw Paw Ridge. After looking at these maps, I realized that both of these areas now border Hampshire County and Morgan County, West Virginia. So that gives me two places to search. http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form Happy hunting! Carolyn
