    2. The children who were left at railroad stations were children from orphanages in New York and Boston. They were called "The Orphan Train" children. My great grandfather raised two of these children in the late 1800s. The "Orphan Train Society" used to have a very helpful site. I haven't used it for a while but I'm sure a Google search will find it for you. Billie Jo

    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, SEPT. 7, 1900 MITCHELL NEWS Rev. E. C. JORDAN goes to conference next week. He will be returned we hope. Ed PINKSTON, colored, for a long time porter at the Grand Hotel died Saturday and was buried Sunday. Mitchell readers are for the position taken by the Mail in regard to our town affairs. It pays to be truthful and fair minded. Howard CHITTY, Bates LIMPUS, Isaiah PHIPPS and other comrades are home again from the great reunion of the G. A. R. at Chicago. Revs. KIMBROUGH, JORDAN and JOHNSON were at Bedford, Monday, along with many more on behalf of the Anti-Saloon League in the fight against the saloons. The city fathers are wrestling with the electric light meter problem. Something must be done and when people pay for light consumed they are apt to be more economical in its use. The Southern Indiana Normal College will be rebuilt, and for that purpose about $7,000.00 is in sight. One student, who had not learned of the fire, came all the way from Montana to enroll. Menlo MOORE is home again from Chicago, where he was studying newspaper illustration work. He made rapid strides in his studies and a full page illustrated poem in a leading magazine shows him to be a clever artist.

    1. The Militia Will Protect Thomasson And Gaines. - Sept. 7, 1900
    2. Diana S Flynn
    3. BEDFORD WEEKLY MAIL BEDFORD, INDIANA FRIDAY, SEPT. 7, 1900 The Militia Will Protect Thomasson And Gaines. Jeffersonville, Ind., September 3. – The ghost of Frank LENTZ has ceased to disturb Oliver THOMASSON, since he unburdened his mind by confession, and there is little that appears to annoy him. He sleeps soundly every night, and it is evident that his attorneys have given him some encouragement. GAINES, his confederate, is not exhibiting equal assurance. He is still nervous, and puts in much of his time watching trains on the Pennsylvania bridge. It is not definitely known when they will be taken to Bedford, but perhaps not for some time. Although the Lawrence Circuit Court convenes today, the grand jury will not be called until next Monday, and it may be several days after that before an indictment is returned. There are indications that a request will be made for a change of venue, and it is said to be absolutely certain that Governor Mount will call out at least one company of militia to protect the prisoners when they go to Bedford. There has been quiet investigation of the feeling in Lawrence county, and enough is known that it is not safe to take the prisoners back without guard.
