Marilyn: You are only one that has learned. Many folks still trust others and this is the price they pay. In the end, I think I had rather have a world of trusting people than an world of garbage such as the ones that write these things called virus. Norma: Well said Norma. Unfortunately there are a lot of trusting folks out there that will open attachments without even thinking that someone out there gets their fun from the pain of others. Information will keep the problem at bay but it will never go. Bill Covey Author of: Watson Is Where It Wuz http://BillCovey.50megs.com
Marilyn, The virus W32/[email protected] is not confined to the Lawrence County rootsweb list. It appeared on the Monroe County list over a week ago. The sender was notified of the problem - it can be spread unknowingly. She checked her computer, found the virus, and had her machine cleaned up. However, the virus is still alive and well. I received two e-mails from the same person yesterday - both with the infected file attachment. I had posted to the Monroe list twice - resulting in two e-mails with the attachment. The virus is NOT spread through rootsweb - not directly. Check the address on the e-mail and you will probably find that the e-mail was sent directly to you - not the list. It is deceiving because the subject in the mail I received read [INMONROE] Re: Hillenburg. I, too, thought that most "worms" spread through the address book in Outlook Express. I was not familiar with the name of the sender of the infected e-mail - wondered why I would be in that person's address book. I learned that this virus is spread through UNREAD e-mail in Outlook Express. If anyone on either list wants to learn more about the virus and how it is spread, go to http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99069& It is a bad one. I sent a personal e-mail to the sender of the infected e-mail I received last night to let he or she know about the virus. Guess what? I received another infected e-mail from that person tonight. Guess that letter was "unread," too. Be careful out there! Thanks Norma. Have received attachments with this virus in various forms, from several of the lists. Although I understand that people aren't sending it out on purpose, it is MOST annoying! I learned my lesson about opening attachments a couple of years ago. I installed Norton a/v software and have not opened anything since that I wasn't certain of! I would think with all the talk about these things over the years that people would learn by others mistakes, but guess it just isn't so. : ( SIGH! Marilyn ----- Original Message ----- From: Norma A. Roberta, I have the listings that were put on disk back in the early '90s by John Nickless. Who would you like me to look for? I just received a file attachment that contains a virus from yet ANOTHER person on the INLAWREN-L. It contained my previous warning about the virus in the text, with the telltale "Take a look to the attachment" following. The attachment in this case was "You_Are_FAT!.txt.pif With all the warnings about opening attachments going around, WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL OPENING ATTACHMENTS WHEN THEY HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THEY ARE???? What remains a mystery to me is how they are getting sent to the list. These are not people that I know personally and don't see any reason that my address would be in their address books which is the 'traditional' way these viruses travel. My understanding was that they could not travel through the Roots-L lists, but now I wonder. Any ideas anyone? Hi All. I have received five letters with and attachments since I wrote the list today. I do not open any attachments so I don't know what it is about but would wonder if it doesn't have something to do with a virus. Thanks to everyone who has written to tell me about the cost of records. Does anyone have a cemetery listing for Bedford? Believe my 4th. gr. grandparents are buried there but would like to find proof. If you don't have a listing who would you suggest I write to? Roberta Summers.
I received the following message, apparently from someone on the INLAWREN-L since my message to Roberta was included. I have ommitted the person's name from the address as I would venture to guess that they were unaware of this (I hope!) and I do not wish to embarass him/her. I have sent them a private e-mail. This is the second such file attachment that I've received this week. The text of the person's message says merely: "TAKE A LOOK TO THE ATTACHMENT". This file attachment is "Sorry_About_Yesterday.DOC.pif" which is one of a number of names under which this virus is spread. If anyone else receives something like this (file extensions .doc & .pif), even with a different name, DELETE IT WITHOUT OPENING!!!! Actually I'd suggest not opening ANY file attachment without running a virus scan, and then only if you're certain of its origin. Thanks to everyone who wrote and told me about the cost of records at the County Clerks office in Lawrence County. Am surprised they no longer except checks. It has been twenty years since I ordered anything from them. Thanks for your time. Roberta Summers.
Hi All, Can anyone tell me what they are charging for a copy of marriage records in Lawrence County? I have the address but need to know how much to send. Also can you order them by computer? Thanks. Roberta Summers.

Think they charging under $5.00??? I do know that you have to send "cash" - they don't accept checks. Decatur County Journal Iowa February 9, l893 MARY MILLSAP died at her mother's home four miles west of Decatur City, last Thursday, aged 42 years. She was born in Lawrence County, Indiana, and moved to this county in l853. When l7 years of age she became converted, joined the M.E. Church, and always lived a consistent Christian life. In September, l886, she sought and obtained the experience of entire sanctification and ever after lived a consecrated life. Though an invalid for the past eighteen years, she was patient and resigned in her afflictions. She said she did not fear death and only desired to live longer that she might do good. She had a word of encouragement for everybody and met death saying, "The will of the Lord be done". Her death is the first to occur in a family of eighteen children--eight boys and five girls. The children were all present at the death bed. The funeral exercises were conducted at the house by REV. W.G. HOHANSHELT, last Friday, after which the remains were laid to rest in Woodmansee Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert Note: I'm not sure if there was an error or not--it says "eighteen children--eight boys and five girls". I would think it should be thirteen.
Does anyone know where the Thomas Jefferson Reed farm and or cemetery is located in Lawrence Co. Or does anyone know who is buried there? Thanks. [email protected]

I have been looking for 30+ years for a marriage record for John Carter Jr and Eliza/Elizabeth Nutterfee/Nutterfield... This John Carter Jr is not to be confused with the John Carter who married Elizabeth Betsy Goss Dittemore et al... Carter/Nutterfee marriage would have occurred 1831-1833 in probably Indiana, but, perhaps in Ky... I have checked them all, but, have found nothing... Also, I am trying to find relationship between John Carter of Morgan Twp, Owen Co., In and John Carter of Taylor Twp, Owen Co., In. ( about 10 miles apart) when there were not too many people around...John Carter of Morgan Twp was from Montgomery County NC... Settled in Indiana about 1829, had many sons, and all had sons John, Calvin, and Columba... All of which are names in "my" John Carter's family... To add insult to injury, when "my": Columba Carter, son of John died in war, His widow married a John H Carter, apparently related to neither John Carter that I knew about... Any help appreciated... I would appreciate any information on a John Carter marriage, regardless of who the bride was... Dick Carter [email protected]
