    1. [INLAWREN] Jack Hughes
    2. Mike Jones
    3. Is there anyone in the Bedford, IN area who can help me? I am trying to trace my branch of the Holyhead (Wales) Hughes family. I know that John Richard Hughes (aka Jack Hughes) went to Bedford, Indiana sometime in the last third (?) of the 1800s. He built a large house in Bedford - called Jack Hughes House. It's mentioned on a walking tour website of the town. He had a daughter named Marguerite, who married my great uncle Menai Jones in the 1930s. She must have been born in the 1890s. Jack set up the Bedford Cut Stone Company and was a stonemason by trade - he went to Bedford because of the limestone industry there. Thanks if you can help in any way! Mike Jones London UK

    1. [INLAWREN] rebecca's successor
    2. hello everyone: i am the new list admistrator for the roots web lawrence co. site. i do not claim to be replacing rebecca because i am sure that would be an impossible challenge. i join you in wishing her well in all that she does. i have been a member of this list for several years so many of you are familiar to me. at least in the cyber sense. a little about me. i grew up in bedford and left there in 1963 after graduating from BHS and notre dame. forty years ago, i married carmella grecco from oolitic. we now live in fenton, mi. and are still very much in love. i am retired due to some health issues after a career with the general motors financial staff and carmella teachs third grade at our local parochial school. my genealogical passion is the murray family who settled in marion township about 1818 having migrated from randolph co. nc. i still own the last of the murray farm south of mitchell. for those of us list members who are a "little longer in the tooth" my father was marion "bunch" murray. dad worked at central foundry and "dot" murray was my uncle. dot was mayor of bedford during the great depression in thw 30's. many lawrence county surnames pic' my interest. sheeks, toliver, burton and finger just to mention a few. i look forward to working for you and hope that our time together is mutually benficial. if i can be of any service, please contact me at <[email protected]>. until needed, iwill be monitoring the electronic waves. find great joy in your work! allen murray

    2. Theresa/Bob Weddell
    3. Could some one please do a look-up on a marriage for me so I can send for the marriage license? Lula Josephine Knight married Harry Beauragard Weddell on April 26, 1913. I am more that "pretty sure" about the date. In Mitchell, Indiana. I posted this on Jackson County and someone told me Mitchell is in Lawrence County! Thanks, Theresa Weddell [email protected] Austin, Texas

    1. [INLAWREN] Lawrence County History Book
    2. Carolyn J. Burns
    3. You can purchase this book online through Higginson Books at http://www.higginsonbooks.com IN0030 HISTORY OF LAWRENCE, ORANGE & WASHINGTON COUNTIES, from the Earliest Time to the Present [1884], with Interesting Biographical Sketches, etc. 937p. (Goodspeed Bros.; 1884) 1992 $94.00 As Diana Flynn was so nice to point out, the biographies from the book have already been transcribed and are located at http://www.angelfire.com/in4/orchidhill/lawrence.html Since the biographies are transcribed by township, you can still use my index to find out what township a person is located in rather than search all the townships. In addition, there are many surnames mentioned in the biographies which I have identified on the index. You can also do a "find" or on the index to identify all the references to a particular name. Thanks! - Carolyn

    3. Thanks, Diana, for letting me know that these biographies were already online....you certainly saved me a bunch of typing - ha! If it's ok, I will keep the index I created with the associated surnames and just refer to the Biographies web site. 3. Odd coincidence, but my Johnson Smith was married in 1834 in Lawrence County, born 1809 in Jessamine County, Kentucky. I am still looking for his parents. I have a James H. Smith in my family, but my Uncle died in 2000. I always wondered where his name came from. Maybe this is a mall break for me. Marty Smith Wells, Pierceton, Indiana

    3. Morgan, Don't know if this will be of any use to you or not, but there are three entries for Spicy Jane Dougherty in the World Connect Project at Rootsweb. One says James Tecumseh Smith died in 1865 in Clay (Co?) Illinois. One file had these notes on Spicy Jane, and a marriage date of Jan 7, 1836: Spicy was an herb Doctor Last name is sometimes spelled Daugherty Spicy is of course listed on the 1850 and 1860 census as the wife of James T. Smith. She appears on the 1870 census living in the town of Nobel in Richland county Illinois. Nobel is a short distance over the county line of Richland and Clay. 2. I wanted to thank Carolyn for the Christmas Parade Pictures. I live in Akron, Ohio and have also visited Bedford, Indiana. The people are friendly and helpful. During my visit I met relatives that I never knew existed. These relatives had never met me and they welcomed me into their home. They also took me to Green Hill Cemetery and helped me find the gravestone of another family member that I had been searching for.
