Looking for any information on Rev. Luther O. Rice who died in Hobart, Lake Co., IN on June 14, 1891. During a recent visit to Hobart area I was able to access the newspaper Hobart Gazette on microform, but the issues (1891-1894) that were filmed and indexed began just after the time Rev. Rice's death would have occurred. Rev. Rice was probably retired, but was married to Sophronia (Preston) Kean Rice who was active in the First Methodist Church in Hobart along with Mrs. J. M. Whitmore. Does anyone have access to the early records of this church? Mrs. Whitmore is reported to be Sophronia's daughter, but is possibly the daughter of Rev. Rice from a previous marriage. Other Whitmores in the area include: Joseph Whitmore who had daughters, S. M. Whitmore and S. A. Whitmore who were teachers in St. Louis, MO. Whether this Joseph Whitmore is the same as J. M. Whitmore has not been established. Mrs. Sophronia Rice died in April 1894, also in Hobart. Reverend Luther O. Rice and wife Sophronia (Preston) [Kean] Rice are buried in the Kean plot in Rose Hill Cemetery in Chicago. Thanks for any help.
