    3. The Hammond Times Indiana July 11, 1956 Striking Gary Steelworker Buys An Island Harry KORNAFEL, a striking steelworker from Gary Indiana, bought an island today for $1,005. KORNAFEL came here from Gary with time on his hands due to the walkout and made an oral bid at the Interior Department auction of two islands in Indiana, last tracts of public land to be sold in Hoosierland by the federal government. The 11 acre island in the Wabash River near Vincennes will be used for hunting and fishing, KORNAFEL said. Two written bids were rejected because they failede to match the appraised value of $1,000. A much smaller island in the Tippecanoe River near Buffalo, Ind., was bought for $210 by William O. BROWN on a oral bid submitted by Don KENDALL, Secretary to Rep. William G. BRAY (R-Ind). The bid was higher than two sealed bids above the appraised valuation of $100. cheryl BALOG wenberg Please contact me if connected to the KORNAFEL/KARNAFEL family.
