Lake County Indiana Obituaries 1964 "MUNSTER PIONEER, 84, DIES" Jacob KOOY, a descendant of one of the first five families to settle in Munster, died in his home, 1131 Ridge Road. Mr. KOOY made trips into Chicago by ox-cart with his father before the turn of the century. Peter KOOY, Jacob's father came to the area in 1857 with four brothers. The brothers were carpenters, and they built many of the early homes in Munster. Jacob KOOY, who learned the carpenter trade from his father, became a contractor. He built many of the homes along Ridge Road, both in Munster and in Lansing. Mr. KOOY died of a stroke. He had been ailing for the past 2 years. Services will be held in the Schroeder Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Road, Lansing. Rev. Harold Turpin of First United Presbyterian Church in Hammond will officiate. KOOY Drive in Munster, which runs alongside the KOOY homestead, was named after Mr. KOOY. Jacob MUNSTER, after whom Munster was named, was one of the four men who settled in the area with Peter KOOY. MUNSTER operated a county store. Before the area was officially named Munster, it was known as Stratmore, a M o n o n railroad junction.
