Hello All, We are hunting for some information and only have vague clues to work with. Maybe someone on the list is from Gary Indiana? Maybe they might even remember a fire in 1941? You never know... We are looking for the facts surrounding the following data (see next). We know a newspaper article was printed about the story...don't know which paper. In 1941, (date unknown), there was a fire in Gary Indiana. The family story has it that the building in question had been hit by lightning once before (causing a fire). And, that this 2nd fire, in 1941 was also caused by a lightning strike. In this 2nd fire, a woman, first name: Eunice, died. She would have been about 42-43 years of age (born 16 Jan 1898 in OH). We know that she was married at the time (was her 2nd marriage), first name and surname of the husband is unknown. Eunice's maiden name would be: GROWDON or GROWDEN. Her first married name was FLAGER. Looking for some more clues and pointers to solving this. Any input appreciated. I've sent a request to the Lake County Library about a lookup in their Newspaper Archives/Vertical files....and also sent an e-mail to the Indiana University Northwest Library as they have files (and logs) of fires in Gary for 1941. Don't know if they'll actually look at the files for us though. We'll likely need someone to go there for us to look at them. Thanks for reading this, any input appreciated. Kind regards, Debbie Paul Tallahassee, FL PS, Maybe? the building in question was a rooming/lodger/boarding house? Maybe...just a possibility I forgot to mention that may or may not help.
