The Hammond Times Indiana Dec. 6, 1944 Saluting Those In The Service Back from Australia Highland Mrs. Walter RITTER of 2658? 38th Street, Highland, received word from her son, S/Sgt. Rolland EVANS, who was stationed with the Marine Corps unit somewhere in Australia, that he is on his way home after spending two and one half years overseas. EVANS was with the first Marine unit that landed on Guadalcanal and this is his first visit home in four years after his enlistment in November, 1940. He received his basic training at the Marine Base at San Diego, Calif., as a radio operator and was then transferred to the first Marine Divisional Training in North Carolina. He was sent overseas in June, 1942, and later sent to Australia. He is supposed to receive a 30 day leave.th ________________________________________________________ SCHAB is " Boot" Edwin A. SCHAB, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob SCHAB, 231 - 156th Street, Calumet City, Ill. is receiving his initial Naval Indoctrination at the U. S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. His recruit training consists of instructions in seamanship, military drill and general Naval procedure. During this period a a series of aptitude tests will be taken by the recruit to determine whether he will be assigned to a Naval Service School, to a shore station or to immidiate duty at sea. ________________________________________________________ DZUIK? DZULK? Loafs 30 days Taking a welcome breather at home, Ray C. DZUIK, EM2/c, son of Mrs. Jean DZUIK, 4228 Johnson Avenue, Hammond, is home for a 30 day leave from the Naval duty. Having spent 19 months overseas, during which he took part in South Pacific action, Ray wears two major battle stars? on his campaign theater ribbons. He has two brothers in the service. These are Pvt. Walter DZUIK with the AAF in the Atlantic and Pfc. John DZUIK with the infantry in the South Pacific. ________________________________________________________ Aviation Cadet Robert GREGORY, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert GREGORY, 418? Park St., East Chicago, a recent graduate of the Army Air Force bombardier school at Albuquerque, N. M., has been appointed a flight officer and awarded the silver wings of the aerial bombardier. Flight Officer GREGORY is a graduate of Hammond High School, Class of 1940 and in civilian life was employed as an apprentice machinist. Prior to his successful completion of ?? weeks of Flight and combat training in high level precision bombing and navigation at Kirkland Field, Flight Officer GREGORY was stationed at the Santa Ana, Calif., Army Air Base. __________________________________________________________ STOLL on LSM Walter STOLL, a resident of Hammond, whose wife and two children reside at 4314 Towle Avenue, has been chosen by the Navy to serve aboard an LSM, the speed carrier of attack that has been especially developed for Pacific duty. Now stationed at the amphibious training base in Little Creek, Va., STOLL is going through the rigorous training program to prepare for duty as motor machinist's mate on the swift new invasion vessel. STOLL, was employed at a local manufacturing concern before he joined the Navy in May of this year. He was a graduate of Whiting High School, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Miss KRANTZ recently graduated from the hospital corps school at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. and will report to the Naval Hospital in Fariagut? Idaho, for duty upon completion of her leave.
