The Lake County Times Indiana Oct. 12, 1918 Hobart Mr. Phillip ROPER, Sr., who has been suffering from heart trouble for the past 8? years passed away at his home east of town, Monday, aged 71 years. He has lived on a farm near Hobart since the year 1856?. He is survived by a wife and four sons Ernest G. ROPER of East Gary Messrs. Phillip Jr., Robert and Luther of this place. Funeral services were held yesterday at his home and were in charge of the Macabees of which he was an active member. Rev. Lawrence of the M.E. church, officiated. The internment was at the Hobart cemetery.

    3. The Lake County Times Indiana July 3, 1919 Pioneer North Side Settler Passes Away On Tuesday, July 2, at the family residence, 240 Towle Street, Mrs. Richard JENKINS Sr., passed away. Mrs. JENKINS had been sick for several weeks and began failing on Sunday June 20th, when she continued to grow weaker until the end came July 2nd. Mrs. JENKINS has been a resident of Hammond since 1887, coming to this city from Bellaire, Ohio, and living for a short time on Logan Street and then moving to the north side, the family having lived for a number of years and then moving to Towle St. She has been a resident of Hammond for practically thirty-two years, and was well known and loved by a large number of friends and neighbors in that part of the city. Mrs. JENKINS was born on the 5th day of January, 1846, in North Wales, England, being at the time of her death 73 years and six months of age. She was a quiet and unassuming woman, but in all the years that she had lived on the north side she was always kind and sympathetic. She was a woman who loved her home and lived to raise manhood and womanhood three sons and one daughter as follows: Mrs. H. E. JONES of East Chicago Richard JENKINS, Jr. of North Hohman Street, Hammond Thomas JENKINS of Chicago Edward JENKINS of Windsor Park Chicago Seven grandchildren and one brother in North Wales The following daughter-in-laws and son-in-laws mourn her loss. JONES Mrs. Elizabeth RIPLEY JENKINS Mrs. Selma HOLTZ JENKINS Mrs. Olive ANDERSON JENKINS The grandchildren being: Mrs. Grace JENKINS GAVIT Agnes JONES Herbert JONES Beatrice JONES Salina JENKINS Esther JENKINS Edward JENKINS Jr. A faithful wife and companion, a kind and loving mother, a fond and indulgent grandmother, a good and true neighbor and friend has gone and in her going the family will miss her and the friends and neighbors will also miss her. Mrs. JENKINS was an earnest Christian woman, being a member for years of the Hebran Welsh Calvanistic Church in Chicago. Undertaker Stewart is in charge of the funeral which will occur at the home on Friday. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery.

The Hammond Times Indiana June 27, 1935 Obits Well Known Pioneer Is Taken By Death Mrs. Louise HAGEN, well known Lake County pioneer and at one time considered one of the most attractive women in the region, died today at her home, 454 Truman Street, Hammond. She had been in failing health for some time. She had persisted in an unusual request for several years - that when she died her age should not be made known. She and her late husband, John HAGEN, who died seven years ago, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary 13 years ago. Born in Mason, Michigan, she came to Lake County when a child and has lived in the region ever since. Her late husband at one time conducted a well digging business in Hobart.     3. The Hammond Times Indiana Sept. 13, Saluting those in the service No. 17 for HENSEY It was his 17th bombing mission as a pilot of a Liberator and Lt. W. T. HENSEY, Jr., son of Mr and Mrs. W. T. HENSEY Sr., 5 Warren Street, Calumet City, has the air medal and one Oak Leaf Clustet to show for it. During his Air Corps career he has flown missions over the same territory his dad fought back in WW I. On leave in London several weeks ago, Lt. HENSEY attended church services at Westminister Abbey, and also witnessed a few of the robot bombings. Before enlisting in the Air Forces he was a metallurgist at the Inland Steel Company. __________________________________________________________________________ Sister gets medal Cpl. Edward A. PULKOWSKI, who was wounded recently somewhere in Italy, was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and has sent the medal to his sistet, Mrs. John BEBENEK of 4415 Torrence Avenue, Hammond. PULKOWSKI was with the 715st tank battalion at the time he was wounded and has been with the Army since 1940, volunteering before his graduation. He attended Hammond Tech High School and has been overseas for the past two years. He has a brother in the service, Sgt. Joe PULKOWSKI, stationed somewhere in the South Pacific. He has been with the Marines for the past 14 years. __________________________________________________________________________ Radio Expert T/Sgt. Charles "Bert" COOPER, son of Mr. and Mrs. William L. COOPER of 1046 Eaton Street, is now stationed overseas with a Marine Corps radio unit. Sgt. COOPER entered the service in June, 1943, and received his "boot" training in San Diego. He received advanced radio training at the Radio Material School in Omaha, Neb., graduating from there in May 1944, with a Sergeants rating. He was sent overseas in July of this year. Sgt. COOPER, whose wife, Kathleen and son, Brian Lee, live with his parents, attended Hammond High and was employed as an inspector at the American Steel Foundries before entering the service. _____________________________________________________________________________ PASHON in New Guinea Reporting from New Guinea, Pfc. Artie P. PASHON says he's still there and wants to be remembered to all his home town friends. The Infantry is PASHON'S outfit and he has served overseas 21 months. He attended Hammond Tech, and before joining the Army, was employed by the General American Transportation Company. Artie is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nick PASHON, 5640 Beall Avenue, Hammond, and has a brother, Sgt. Gail W. PASHON, in England with the Air Force. ____________________________________________________________________________ ZYARA Gets New Rate For a job well done, Uncle Sam has promoted Charles A. ZYARA of Whiting to the rate of yoeman first class. Now stationed at Port Hueneme, Calif. C. Medal Sgt. Rose A. MEYER, daughter of Mrs. Mary OVANEK, 5963? Louis GORANOWSKI, son of Mrs. Cecelia GORANOWSKI of 419 155th St., Calumet City, described the picturesque beauty of St. Peter's cathedral and the leaning tower of Pisa which left "me breathless," He is a graduate of Thornton Fractional High School in Calumet City and prior to his enlistment in Sept., 1942, he was employed as a butcher in Whiting. He received basic training at Camp Bowie, and Camp Wolters, Tex. He has been in Italy with an ordnance division of the Army as a repairman for a year. Rolland EVANS, who was stationed with the Marine Corps unit somewhere in Australia, that he is on his way home after spending two and one half years overseas. EVANS was with the first Marine unit that landed on Guadalcanal and this is his first visit home in four years after his enlistment in November, 1940. He received his basic training at the Marine Base at San Diego, Calif., as a radio operator and was then transferred to the first Marine Divisional Training in North Carolina. He was sent overseas in June, 1942, and later sent to Australia. He is supposed to receive a 30 day leave.th ________________________________________________________ SCHAB is " Boot" Edwin A. SCHAB, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob SCHAB, 231 - 156th Street, Calumet City, Ill. is receiving his initial Naval Indoctrination at the U. S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. His recruit training consists of instructions in seamanship, military drill and general Naval procedure. Having spent 19 months overseas, during which he took part in South Pacific action, Ray wears two major battle stars? on his campaign theater ribbons. He has two brothers in the service. Park St., East Chicago, a recent graduate of the Army Air Force bombardier school at Albuquerque, N. M., has been appointed a flight officer and awarded the silver wings of the aerial bombardier. Flight Officer GREGORY is a graduate of Hammond High School, Class of 1940 and in civilian life was employed as an apprentice machinist. Prior to his successful completion of ?? weeks of Flight and combat training in high level precision bombing and navigation at Kirkland Field, Flight Officer GREGORY was stationed at the Santa Ana, Calif., Army Air Base. __________________________________________________________ STOLL on LSM Walter STOLL, a resident of Hammond, whose wife and two children reside at 4314 Towle Avenue, has been chosen by the Navy to serve aboard an LSM, the speed carrier of attack that has been especially developed for Pacific duty. Now stationed at the amphibious training base in Little Creek, Va., STOLL is going through the rigorous training program to prepare for duty as motor machinist's mate on the swift new invasion vessel. STOLL, was employed at a local manufacturing concern before he joined the Navy in May of this year. He was a graduate of Whiting High School, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. The Hammond Times Indiana August 10, 1926 Dies At Age of Ninety Lake County Pioneer, well known over the county, Answers Last Call Another Lake County pioneer, Mrs. Barbara ELLWANGER, more than ninety years old, passed away last night. She died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Florence GESCHELDER TANKE? at 411 Sibley Street, Hammond, during the night and was found dead early this morning, following a hemorrhage stroke. The funeral has been arranged for Thursday when services will be held at the late home after which the body will be taken to Crown Point for services in the Trinity Lutheran Church of which she was a member for many years. Mrs. ELLWANGER was typical of the pioneer stock of Lake County, deeply religious, optimistic for the future, hard working, thrifty, neighborly. A native of Wuertemberg, Germany, Mrs. ELLWANGER came to this country when her widowed father as the oldest of nine children. After her marriage at Crown Point, she and her husband settled on a farm half way between Cedar Lake and Crown Point. Here three children were born, only one of whom, John F. ELLWANGER of Hammond, survives. Six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren also survive. Following the death of her husband thirty years ago, Mrs. ELLWANGER moved to Hammond where she made her home with her daughter, now deceased, Mrs. Fred. C. GESCHEIDLER, at 411 Sibley Street. Here she was always surrounded with all the love and care devoted children and grandchildren lavished upon her. For many years she enjoyed the best of health. On July 11?, her final illness set in, and her demise was therefore not unexpected.
