p.s. and my problems concerned getting deed records I was told to get a title company to do it problems getting probate records they can't find a probate I need they won't photo copy the index pages for me and problems with getting imigration and naturalization records I have the book and page numbers they claim the don't have those books and according to their retension schedule they do have those books I was told the books were given away and they didn't know to who I wrote each entity that they thought might have the books and no one has them
<<Have they changed the policy at the courthouse? >> my problems started with them before 1993 and continued after I haven't contacted them in the last few years take care, Debbie
Have they changed the policy at the courthouse? It has been a couple of years, but I have been there several times and gone through the books myself looking for marriages. I would provide them with the information to make copies from the film. The people there were very helpfull. They are very busy, as they also have to issue new licenses, and usually have a long line for that. I do know that if you want divorce records, they do require the "file number" or "exact date" to be able to look it up. Aaron D. Thomas Researching THOMAS MAU/MOW MCCLOUD LEHR and others

Ok I've had it too! I've written Lake County Court house for records at least 2x for records , I've never recieved a response. Why don't we get our "S***" together and do some thing. Lets all band together and do some thing about Lake county's blowing off us genealogists. With stupid excuses like "oh we don't have those records" or "we gave them to somebody" or other lame reasons when we know darn well that most of the records we ask for are PERMANENT MEANING THEY CANNOT BE DESTROYED!!! I guess they think we aren't to sharp and will shrug our shoulders and walk away! I've been on this list now for years and I've hear the same story over and over of the employees of County Lake not allowing access to the records we NEED! However to be affective it might be best to band together given there is power in numbers. One complaint is not enough. Fifty complaints or a constant complaints about the lack of public access will move them to change their ways. They are not above STATE LAWS. They do have to answer to a higher state offical. If they don't a mass of complaints will put their butt in a sling. We need this to be a join effort though. What do you think will happen if the power that be down state start getting 10- 20 -30 complaints a week! In time some one will take notice. My ancestors have lived in Lake County for 168 years why can I not see a land transfer thats 150 years old!!! If they don't have it (which I believe would be an out and out lie) they have to tell me where its at!!! Lets talk about this! Here's is the link to a handbook of access to public records====http://www.in.gov/pac/handbook/Handbook.PDF cut and paste to your search and review Lets all talk about some sort of ACTION!!! The Access to Public Records Act of Indiana states that "…it is the public policy of the state that all persons are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and employees. Providing persons with the information is an essential function of a representative government and an integral part of the routine duties of public officials and employees, whose duty it is to provide the information. This chapter shall be liberally construed to implement this policy and place the burden of proof for the nondisclosure of a public record on the public agency that would deny access to the record and not on the person seeking to inspect and copy the record." Indiana Code § 5-14-3-1. Indiana Jack [email protected]
The Porter County Library in Valparaiso has a copy of the naturalization records for Lake County. See this website: http://www.pcpls.lib.in.us/genpage.htm Give them a call about their Lake County records. They are very helpful. They also have on microfilm: Northwest Indiana Gary Diocese Catholic Records Births, deaths, confirmations, marriages,Christenings 1850-1991 (scattered years) that might help someone. Leigh Ann Hofferth [email protected]
I am sure they didn't copy them while I was there because they are very busy. While I was standing at the counter filling out the forms, 3 couples were waiting in line to get a marriage license. Every time I've been in there there have been people waiting in line. To all, several years ago I heard that the naturalization records had been pulled from all over IN and were going to be made more accessable to the public does anyone know anymore about that? take care, debbie
<<<Will there also be someone from the Lake Co. Courthouse at this seminar to explain why they won't let genealogists have access to records that are clearly covered under the Freedom of Information act? Now that would make for a very interesting afternoon discussion topic!>>> I would love to have the answer to this! oh and I was told the deeds were lost and then I heard that the Calumet archives at the college has them does anyone know if they have ever gotten around to indexing them it seems they were given the deeds but no index and the films of the deeds were supposedly ruined in a basement somewhere I have the newspaper article my uncle sent it to me several years ago take care, Debbie
you can also get the index on film from the Mormans' (you can order them at your local Family History Center in your local Morman Church) this 3 films and covers 1850-1920 they also have some birth and death indexes before 1920 take care, Debbie
<<I am looking for James Davis b. about 1916 in Columbus, OH; d. unknown; m. unknown; parents are; Gilbert Davis and Margaret Carlan. It is noted in his father's obit dated November 1947 that James resided in Indiana harbor, IN at that time. What do I do now?>>> what exactly are you looking for? James Davis may come up in the 1920 census in OH with his parents I'm assuming you want to know when he died I'm guessing there are a lot of James DAVIS' in the ssdi you really would need his birthdate to find him there might be city directories but you would need to go to Lake County to access those I was in Lake County in 1993 and they have some wonderful resources in the Indiana rooms at the local library I was in 2 of them take care, Debbie
