    1. [INLAKE] Upcoming Visit to Whiting & Hammond
    2. Jusko
    3. Group, I'll be travelling from Rochester, NY to Lake County, next week, to interview 3 people who knew my great-grandparents when they were youngsters. So I am assured of success, already. However, I hope to dig up some documentary evidence also. From the many comments I have read, it seems that the Courthouse may be a no-win situation. Do researchers run into problems with birth & death records and probate? Any strategies for success at the Courthouse would be appreciated. What about any church records for St. John the Baptist's, in Whiting? Is access to the early records possible ? Which Lake County Library has the best records? Would you recommend that I forgo the Lake County Libraries and do research at the Valparaiso Library? Are there any Whiting directories from the early 1900s? Where are they located? Can any other depositories of information be identified? Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you in advance. George Jusko [email protected] Searching For: Jusko, Fedor, Potasnik

    1. [INLAKE] Schererville history book now available
    2. BY ART SCHWEITZER Schererville's town council members helped to record the town's precious history by creating the pictorial No. 3, 2002 history book, which can be viewed at our libraries or purchased for $12 at the Schererville Clerk-Treasurer's Office, located at 833 Old Lincoln Highway. Vince Ruffolo of Sheffield Printers has put together a tremendous, well-received book. How long they will remain for sale is anyone's guess. Do you remember where Arnie's hot dog building was? The old Lincoln Motel? Grandmother's Attic (an old motel)? Teibel Tourist Motels? The Sherwood swimming pool? Wicks Lumber Co.? The picnic area and all the rides of Sauzers Kiddieland? The area and the Harder House where Best Western now is and on and on? If you were connected somehow with any of the thousands of pictures we have, the book becomes a part of your life. On the cover of the new book is Schererville Township school No. 1 (it's not Old St. Mike's). Quite a few people know Edie Schaafsma (who later was Edie Govert and still later Edie Adams). She attended school here, as did Richard Tiebel, only to name a few. Page 57 shows how Homan School started, and page 56 shows the old two-story building with the new Homan School being built. Art Schweitzer is the president of the Schererville Historical Society. ---------------- Short note from me, all the area historical/genealogical societies information is now on a new page. If you know of any others for the area that are online, let me know: http://khuish.tripod.com/histsoci.htm Kathy

    1. [INLAKE] Help finding dates
    2. If anyone can give me some help on finding a birth of a son from my grandfather William Harry SKINNER in I believe is Valapariso, Porter Indiana I would greatly appreciate it. I know I am going to have to get either the birth certificate or my grandfathers marriage bond from the health department or court house because it is around 1930's since there is hardly any info. for that time. I think he was married to a Jane BILOU. Although it was said it was BIMBO. I cannot find anything on the internet to give me any kind of information or dates so I can give a date to the person at the right departments to look it up. It would have been his first marriage. My grandfather was born in Valapariso, but I guess it's possible he could have gotten married some other county or town. According to family history, she was already pregnant when they had gotten married. They had one son. He married to my grandmother sometime before 1937 because my Mom said they were married a couple of years before they had her, which was in 1937. Is anyone up for this challenge? God Bless Pam

    1. [INLAKE] Luther O. Rice (1810-1891) Hobart, IN
    2. Albert R. Gordon
    3. Looking for any information on Rev. Luther O. Rice who died in Hobart, Lake Co., IN on June 14, 1891. During a recent visit to Hobart area I was able to access the newspaper Hobart Gazette on microform, but the issues (1891-1894) that were filmed and indexed began just after the time Rev. Rice's death would have occurred. Rev. Rice was probably retired, but was married to Sophronia (Preston) Kean Rice who was active in the First Methodist Church in Hobart along with Mrs. J. M. Whitmore. Does anyone have access to the early records of this church? Mrs. Whitmore is reported to be Sophronia's daughter, but is possibly the daughter of Rev. Rice from a previous marriage. Other Whitmores in the area include: Joseph Whitmore who had daughters, S. M. Whitmore and S. A. Whitmore who were teachers in St. Louis, MO. Whether this Joseph Whitmore is the same as J. M. Whitmore has not been established. Mrs. Sophronia Rice died in April 1894, also in Hobart. Reverend Luther O. Rice and wife Sophronia (Preston) [Kean] Rice are buried in the Kean plot in Rose Hill Cemetery in Chicago. Thanks for any help.

    3. Hi Sue, Would you please look up Michael HOZDOVICH or HVOZDOVICH who died in 1923 at age 40? I believe he may be buried in Holy Ghost Cemetery. He was Slovak. His wife Helena Boris Hozdovich, who may have been Czech, should be buried with him. She died in 1946. They lived in Indian Harbor in 1914 when Greg mother Mary Hozdovich Centanne was born. These are my husband's grandparents whom he never met because he was born in Gary in 1951. Thanks! 2. Ira James SKINNER, No sorry about that, your William Harry SKINNER is not the father of mine. His father and mother are Fred and Wilhelmine SKINNER. My grandfather William Harry SKINNER was born 27 June 1909 in Valparasio Porter Indiana and only had one child being my mother. However he was married before to a Jane BILBOU or BIMBO and had a son. I have been trying to locate this person because my mother is an only child and would love to hear from her half brother. It's weird how your name is Ira, my grandfathers brother was named Ira SKINNER. If you have any other questions just ask. If anyone can help me locate this person to make my mothers long last dream come true I would greatly, greatly appreciated it. 2. Carol Garbo
    3. Hello: I am trying to locate any info on William (Bill) Rollins, his wife Hazel & any children they may have had. (Bill was my dad's cousin & we lost track of Bill aroud 1940 or so). Bill Rollins was b. circa 1916 in IL; his father's name was Tony Rollins (b. in Russia); mother's name was most likely Maude. Bill was primarily raised in West Frankfort, Franklin Co., IL. (His father, Tony, was a coal miner & raised Bill alone after he & Bill's mother divorced). Bill married Hazel Cable, also from est Frankfort, IL. At some point, he & Hazel moved to Gary, IN. When Bill's dad died in Dec. 1943, Bill was serving in the Marines in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Hazel was still living in Gary, IN & was the informant on her father-in-law's death cert. We've been unable to locate any info on Bill & Hazel after that point. If anyone has any info on Bill and/or Hazel, please contact me. Thank you for any help. Carol

    1. [INLAKE] Re: [INDIANA] Re: [Jones] Jones
    2. Cahty, I didn't mention any date from the Bible because there were none for the Pete JONES and Lydia.. and I do not know her maiden name yet, but have a good lead. What I am going to list now is from one of Lydia's daughter's (Hattie BROWN, maiden name JONES) - daughter's Bible -- who is Daisy May BROWN/McCALLUM/McGLAUGHLIN, Daisy is my g grandmother. Daisy's maiden name was BROWN (her father William BROWN), Daisy married a James S. McCALLUM, he died and she later married a Nathan Oliver SMITH, who she finally divorced against her wishes, and then she married what was said to be the love of her life a Grant McGLAUGHLIN However the births in the Bible are Nathan Oliver SMITH b. 8 April 1882 >> 1st Wife who died shortly after giving birth: Synthia M. Donalson b. 18 July 1882 d. 6 June 1917>> infant who died> Mariah Oliv Smith 31 May 1917 d. 31 May 1917 >>a son, Nathan Ewing Smith b. 26 Oct 1909 . Daisy's 1st husband> James S. McCALLUM b. 11 Jan 1865 d. 31 Dec 1918 -- Daisy May BROWN/McCALLUM/SMITH/McGLAUGHLIN b 7 March 1892 in Prescott MI d. 17 March 1982 in Alamogordo, New Mexico --- James Murry McCALLUM b. 11 Oct 1909 in Prescott MI --- Mary Ellen McCALLUM b. 21 Jan 1912 in Prescott MI died at a young age in a car accident leaving a young son, Phillip HARTLERODE who Daisy adopted and raised---- Anges May McCALLUM b.12 Dec 1913 in Flint MI ----Frances Louise McCALLUM/SMITH/SKINNER b. 25 April 1916 in East Tawas MI d. 20 Jan 2002 in TN. --- Marguerite Lucille McCALLUM b. 24 Nov 1918 d. 28 Dec 1918 My g grandmother is Daisy M. McCALLUM/SMITH/McGLAUGHLIN (maiden name BROWN) & her daughter Frances Louise McCALLUM is my grandmother who married a William Harry SKINNER. When Daisy remarried Nathan Oliver SMITH, he adopted all the children therefore changing their last name from McCALLUM to SMITH... Some stayed in MI and some moved to IN.. There you have it Thanks again for all who have help me in my search.. It is greatly appreciated God Bless Pam

    1. [INLAKE] Re: [Jones] Jones
    2. My brick wall is my JONES in Michigan areas such as Prescott in Ogemaw County Michigan, East Tawas in Iosco County Michigan, Flint in Genesee County Michigan. Those the only places I see listed on in a family Bible with births and dates. To start I am looking for a Pete JONES who married someone name Lydia, maiden name unknown to me. But she was born in Michigan. Pete died in from one of those diseases that was common. She then married someone named Chapel, don't know if that is a last name or first name. Next is a William BROWN. The picture I have looks like she is at least in her 60's, her hair is all white/gray. Written on the back with the information says the picture was taken in 1910. Lydia Jones has 3 daughters that I know of, Emma JONES, it says she was an old maid, Florida (Flora) JONES and Hattie JONES. I also have names on another picture with what looks like the same lady, Lydia, 2 different pictures of people with her. On it the one girl name is written Aunt Liddy JONES and the man says Uncle LAFFIE. Then about the child it just says, Liddy's kid...No other information..So I don't know if these 2 other people are her children or if my grandmother was writing and reffering to them as her Aunt and Uncle.. But anyhow those are the names I have in MICHIGAN... BTW, some moved to INDIANA at some point... Any JONES with those names in MICHIGAN? God Bless Pam

    2. Debbi
    3. Greetings listers, I have finally discovered the exact death date of my g.grandma ANNA SCHUMACHER (Shumaker) and was hoping to get a copy of her obituary. Can someone please tell me what newspaper would be my best bet to locate her obit? She died 17 SEPT 1911 in Hammond. I am desperately trying to locate where she was buried and also because I believe her son Ludwig is buried with her as her children, upon her death, went to live with her sister in Wisconsin. Anna was from WI before marriage. Anyway, I am hoping that her obit will state which cemetery in Milwaukee. I thought her death cert would've stated that but to my surprise, it only stated "Milwaukee, Wis". No name of the cemetery. Any suggestions, help, or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so very much, Debbi
