Matt, On 7/26/2000 I ordered via phone the 1912 Indiana Death Certificate of my grandfather from: Indiana State Department of Health Division of Vital Records 2 North Meridian Street Indianapolis, IN 46204 (Phone: 317-233-2700; Fax: 317-233-7210) The VCN Fee was $5.00, Agency Request Fee was $4.00. I chose to pay an additional $11.35 for Overnight Carrier (FedX) Fee. Total: $20.35. I live in Arizona and had the Indiana death certificate in less than 24 hours. Hope this is helpful. Jimi
I was going to request some death records through the Lake COunty Health Department. On-line I noted that their fee was $4.00 per record ordered. When I called to them I got an automated message saying the fee was $7.00. First question is which is true? The next is do they have to have a date of death. I do not have a date and was hoping this would help, but do not know if they will do a search for it and if so is that extra. If anyone can give infomation it would be appreciated. Matt Halton
Looking for information on Phebe WILSON (married name) who apparently lived in North Township, Lake County from 1865 or earlier to 1880 or later. She was born ca 1802 in Washington County, New York. She was widowed by 1855. At least one child, Chauncey. Were there other children? What was her death date? Where is she buried? - Rich Holmes
Who would I write to for a copy of a Lake County will? I am told Phoebe Wilson's will is recorded in record book "C" page 152. Is there a town office or court that would supply me with a copy by mail, or do I need to hire someone to look it up and copy it for me? - Rich Holmes

For those new to the roots web and those of you veterans I would like to say that there are many folks who subscribe that are willing to do what they can to help others in their research. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 1743 prisoners of war on record from the state of Indiana and about 700 who died here, I thought I would send my offer. I also do the research for any prisoners from any state that were here. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of mispellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. Please do not concider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. Please email me directly for lookup request at [email protected] I also take grave photos for a small fee that covers my cost. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. am new to genealogy and researching, how would I go about locating the following on the 1930 Census for Lake County Indiana? Since there are so many districts listed, I have no idea which would be the correct one in which to look. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you, Valerie [email protected] According to the Gary, Indiana City Directory for 1923 Alexander B Lilly was living at 456 Massachusetts Street, Gary, Indiana. He is listed as being a bricklayer. Also living at this address are: Cecelia, wife, Alexander B, Jr., also a bricklayer, Elizabeth Lilly, a clerk and William Lilly an Electrician. Listed as sponsor of brother Robert McKay Lilly on his entrance to America in 1923. Address given for Alexander 452 Jefferson Street, Gary, Indiana According to the 1925, 1926, 1927, 1929, 1930 City Directory for Gary, Indiana, Robert Lilly and Annie were living at 708 Vermont, Gary, Indiana, Robert is listed as a bricklayer.
George, I've tried to pull together information that will help you regarding your trip here. I have only dealt with the Lake Co. Courthouse when I knew dates and/or book & page numbers and never have had problems so can't address that part of your query. However, I live in Porter Co. (next county on the east) and go to the Valparaiso library quite often. I checked with them this morning and here's what the library has: Filmed records from St.John the Baptist for communion, marriage, death and confirmation from 1925 to 1962 (some go to 1993). If there are earlier records extant they would be with the church or at the diocese office. I checked for the phone number of the church but couldn't find a listing for it. Perhaps it was absorbed into another church?? Anyway, if you need earlier than 1925 the diocese office can be reached at 219-769-9292 or [email protected] The WPA birth and death record book for Whiting starts in 1899; Hammond's in 1882. Marriage records in most cases go back to the 1850's but don't include any parental information until shortly after 1900. City directories: try Whiting Library 219-473-4700, 219-659-0269 or [email protected] Hammond Library 219-931-5100 or [email protected] East Chicago Library 219-397-2453 or [email protected] Indiana University Northwest in Gary has a large archive section which may or may not have records from Whiting - contact Steve McShane, the archivist at [email protected] or 219-980-6628 (that's his direct number). It's necessary to call or email him to make an appointment to view the collection. You didn't mention what time period you are looking in but if any of the times are after 1900 I can look in the WPA books and give you a book and page number whicn might make it easier for you at the courthouse. I will be at the library on Friday night and can do it then. Last but not least.....I don't know where you plan to stay but if you are going to be in the Merrillville area avoid the intersection of I-65 and Route 30. It is all torn up with reconfiguration of the ramps and lanes and I've heard locals complain because they can hardly find their way through the maze of orange cones. Hope this helps. Any more questions, please let me know. Pat _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
