I was just looking at a map and I noticed New Chicago. Father Dominic was living in Hammond when married 30 December 1907, mother South Chicago, Illinois. Where would I search in Lake County for a possible birth in New Chicago in 1909? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Cherly Wenberg for tyhe great "thetimesonline" site for obits. Just got off it and found a wealth of info on Floyd's sister's son who died in 1999. Now I have a few more people to write to. Jim Morgan Salt Lake City

This isn't always a perfect list, but I take most of my Indiana Media information from them. For example, the Times, listed in Munster, has a website at www.nwitimes.com, and that's not listed. But for sheer amount of information, its worth a look. http://www.moreenergy.com/indiana.html#news It also covers radio and television stations for Indiana. Concetta

    1. [INLAKE] Genealogy Related Spam Email
    2. Janet Headley
    3. In the past couple of weeks I have received some spam messages that are disturbing. The messages are quite personal, greeting me by name and then claiming to be sent by an attorney representing a deceased (and wealthy) previously-unknown relative. Below is an article from Eastman's Genealogy Newsletter re same. jh Dear Eastman, I am Barrister James Ibe, a solicitor at law. I am the personal attorney to Mr. Patrick Eastman a national of your country, who used to work with Shell Development Company in Nigeria. Here in after shall be referred to as my client. On the 21st of April 2000, my client, his wife and their only daughter were involved in a car accident along Sagamu express road. I admit that the greeting of "Dear Eastman" is a bit suspicious. Whatever happened to the word "Mister?" Surely an attorney, even one who speaks English only as a second language, would know better. The e-mail message goes on at some length, telling a story of how the attorney is seeking relatives of the deceased client so that a distribution of the estate may be made. The e-mail message claims that the estate is worth millions. Those of us who have been on the Internet for some time will quickly recognize the message as a "4-1-9 Scam." It is known internationally as "4-1-9" fraud, after the section of the Nigerian penal code which addresses fraud schemes. In fact, 99.9% of the people who receive these messages will know that it is bogus and will quickly delete it. The sad part of this tale lies with the other 0.1% of the people who receive these messages. They get suckered. The perpetrators of this scam need only a few gullible people to respond in order to steal tens of thousands of dollars. In the last few weeks, I have had three different people tell me that a friend or co-worker of theirs has responded to Nigerian solicitations with expectations of receiving large amounts of money. These people have supplied their names, personal mailing addresses and, in some cases, personal financial information. The sad part is that most people who fall for these stories will lose money, and a few will even lose their lives. The United States Secret Service Web site offers this warning: a.. In almost every case there is a sense of urgency; b.. The victim is enticed to travel to Nigeria or a border country; c.. There are many forged, official-looking documents; d.. Most of the correspondence is handled by fax or through the mail; e.. Blank letterheads and invoices are requested from the victim along with the banking particulars; f.. Any number of Nigerian fees are requested for processing the transaction, with each fee purported to be the last required; g.. The confidential nature of the transaction is emphasized; h.. There are usually claims of strong ties to Nigerian officials; i.. A Nigerian residing in the U.S., London, or other foreign venue may claim to be a clearing house bank for the Central Bank of Nigeria; j.. Offices in legitimate government buildings appear to have been used by impostors posing as the real occupants or officials. While not mentioned on the United States Secret Service Web site, some news stories claim that people from a number of countries have been duped by this scam and have traveled to Nigeria or to nearby countries. They usually carry a lot of money that supposedly is to be used to bribe officials in an effort to obtain the funds in question. Instead, the foreigners are murdered by the Nigerian perpetrators of this scam, and the money disappears. Here is my advice: never, ever pay any attention to any spam mail, other than to read it for amusement. Never, ever purchase anything from an unsolicited e-mail advertisement from a person or company that you do not recognize. Any offer received in "spam mail" is most likely a scam. Finally, never, ever enter into any "business arrangements" without a lot of investigation. Do a search on the Web. Ask your friends. If there are significant sums of money involved, ask your lawyer. You can read a lot more about this at http://www.ustreas.gov/usss/alert419.shtml as well as at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=nigerian+scam Janet

    2. THIS LIST IS WONDERFUL! Thanks to all who helped me find information on Floyd's parents. His 94th birthday on the 21th of February is going to be great because of what I've found so far. In just three days I found the information that I needed on the marriage of Dominick Ganz and Sigrid Ekdahl. I want to thanks especially the following: Marlene Polster-she went to the county courthouse and got a copy of the marriage applications that gave a wealth of information on Sigrid. L Blanchard-before I even I knew information about her she sent me information on a Sigrid Ekdahl who immigrated in 1895 at age 15 America and it was the correct one as the birth information on the marriage record agrees on her age. also to: Diane (dsprehe) Cheryl (cswoodie) Debbie Alley Each of them have given me great help and suggestions that I'll now follow-up on. I believe this is what genealogy is all about, helping others. Thanks again to each of you. You are all wonderful. Jim MOrgan In cold and snowy Salt Lake City (finally)

    3. Pam, Now that you are getting involved in genealogy and your family tree, you have an interest in geography. You are not too far out of high school to get a map and learn about where things are in Ireland, or wherever this adventure takes you. You will learn more and remember more if you do the searching yourself, instead of someone doing it for you. Sorry if I sound preachy. 1. Re: [INLAKE] Having troubles understanding Ireland, McCOLLUM - SHARP or SHARPE
    2. Concetta Franco
    3. Pam, Don't feel bad about failing geography! I did too! :-) The trick to it is to find a good map, with large enough labels to read, and an easy to read grid and a good index. Then, you start with the town you want, look it up in the index, and see the coordinates (usually a letter and a number). Find the place where the number and letter match up, and then look for your town in only that box. The things I've learned are this: 1-usually, if you can't find something on a map, its because the labels aren't clear 2-it pays to keep modern maps and old maps around. That way, you can apply what you know from a modern map to an older one. 3-If all else fails, find someone good at geography and bug the heck out of them until you understand! :-) My fiancé, a history major, is very good with old maps and has been invaluable in trying to figure things out in Wales, Ireland and France. 4-Don't be afraid to make copies and start putting stickers and stuff on the copies. A Post-it Flag on a town with a family name and year makes things much more clear on my maps. Also, you can overlay copies of old maps onto new ones, so that you can see where things match up - also useful, especially in counties which changed their shape. It took me going through a geography class in high school and two more in college before I started to "sorta" get it. I don't know everything there is to know, but I can at least understand what my good friend Rand McNally Atlas is trying to tell me :-) Concetta

    2. Just thought I would post one more time just in case someone might of missed my first post. I am not familiar with Ireland and am having a hard time finding my way around. Although I did have help from Oscar and I found the ship which may be my McCOLLUM, but he is married to someone no one in the family has ever mentioned before. That's besides the point, I am looking for his parents and siblings. All I have to go on is that the father's last name is McCOLLUM and the mothers was either SHARP or SHARPE. I was told that she spent time in the Northern part of Ireland known as the Orange Section. How do I find out census, births, marriages and such in Ireland? Do they even have Census for Ireland? Plus it takes me forever just to go through the census since I don't have the fast connection. Like I said I am a complete num. when it comes to geography...a capital F. Really you guys, I failed it in High School, not proud of it, just that it is something I could never get interested in. Now I wish I would have. Can anyone give a helping hand? God Bless Pam
